Grinders, that's an addiction! I started wit one and now I'm going thru number 5! All are working, the advantage: each one has a different disc.One is cordless for use outside the shop and the rest for shop. Started with a cheap Black and Decker and now all are high end. Like I said, an addiction LOL!!!!! Thanks for sharing all tha info!
I recently watched professional welders join 30 inch high pressure steam lines in a refinery. Each welder had 3 angle grinders : wire brush , cut off disc and grinding disc. Interestingly they did not use auto darkening helmets. I am guessing they needed completely clear view to allow careful inspection of the weld. Two welders working on opposite sides of the pipe would take many hours to join a section.
I agree with the multiprocess statement. I have used a cheap ac stick welder for years. And then I finally decided to upgrade. And decided to get a fancy multiprocess machine. So I bought one that did all the processes. Boy was I shocked to find out that I needed to invest 4 times what I invested in my new welder to be able to get mediocre results. I am only a DIY guy. I decided to get a Flux core welder and a DC stick welder instead. And not pay extra for the shielding gas. I sold the welder to a mechanic. And I am happy with my my new welders. I can weld aluminum and most things you will find in my garage. I appreciate your videos and simple, easy to understand instructions and examples. Keep it up.
I was in Tractor Supply a couple years ago and they used to have a shelf with items sorta neatly arranged (until the public "sorted" it) and it was either items they would no longer have for inventory, box missing, and reasons unknown and the price was deeply discounted. Everything was usually in new condition.. On the shelf one day were 2 F clamps that had a mechanism to lock in place by squeezing instead of turning a C-clamp style and it had a quick release feature. These were the same size as the F clamps. The price was something like $5.00a each. They even had F clamps that were still being sold up front for an equally low price. I stocked up on both lever type (I love them) and 4 F clamps. Too bad a new manager got rid of that area.
While rarely used anymore. The first process I learned was oxy/acetylene welding. Followed by stick, I feel learning gas welding first made all the other processes especially TIG much easier.
When I was at school that was the first process we learned. The great thing about it? It's slow. You can really get used to watching the puddle. Uphill sucks so much though.
Commenting at the end of the angle grinder segment. The angle grinder is the second most dangerous tool in industry behind the chainsaw. They don't like you, and the second you do something stupid, they will bite. I took a wire wheel to the inner thigh during my first ever weld test for a job, if I hadn't had good jeans and won the lottery in that moment who knows, fortunately for me I only got some surface level cuts and didn't get the job. Respect that tool. Edit. It is still the most important tool for metal working though. Just....leave the frickin guard and handle on. If you can't make it work, step back and think through what you're trying to do.
Thanks for bringing that up, Jeff. Real-life stories can help make people believers when it come to safety. Another issue with AG's is start-up torque - it can flip the grinder right out of your hand. I have a dark scar on my right ankle for that very reason.
Thanks, I have a bit of a background in safety. I didn't work out because I realized that occupational h+s is really just "liability mitigation." Also I hate office jobs lol. But I've seen security camera and dash cam footage of the last moments of people's lives, and pictures or IRL glimpses of some nasty injuries. Safety really is no joke. I'm not one of those people with a stick up my ass about following every rule to the T, but when I hear "this could kill or maim you." I pay attention to the strategy that should help me avoid it.

I was impressed recently to find how easily a reciprocating saw can cut through rebar. Especially for those who are rightfully afraid of cutting discs on grinders, a cheap reciprocating saw (sawzall) might be a handy addition. (The one I tested was a cheap battery powered Hart one I got in a kit, with a cheap metal cutting blade, but a corded one will be cheaper and probably more powerful at the low end of budgets.)
One thing to keep in mind when using angle grinders to cut is that this is when the danger of the cut off blade failing is the greatest because the angle at which the angle grinder is being held becomes different from the cut that is being made. I make it standard procedure that when using an angle grinder to cut is to have my body out of the plane of the cutting wheel. That way if the wheel breaks, it reduces the likelihood that a chunk of a hard material will hit your body at a very high velocity. Also, never operate an angle grinder without a wheel guard.
Tim, where were you when I started? lol. I did a video on my channel, but had way too many tools for a new hobbyist. I agree with your guidance about the essentials. Another great video for the history books.
This welding stuff is all new to me. I don’t know what or what i need to start… its overwhelming. What do you recommend for person who want to make outdoor furniture and planter stand, planter pots stands and many more home furniture too with welding but DO NOT want any welders machine that need gas tank, or any gas stuff attached to welder machine to function and weld? What brand welder machine you recommend for new starter to buy and start welding? Can you make a video on how to work as operates a welder and teach about it set settings and understand about how to operate and use a welder machine for a new explorer in the welding world.
As I have found out, buying the welder is the cheap part. I now have multiple gas bottles (all purchased) multiple angle grinders, a supply of materials, a supply of different filler metals (not only type, but alloy as well), one welding table, one work table, additions to the electrical system, other tools (some of which I already had). For example, I just purchased a dedicated TIG welder for a goodly sum. I will easily spend half as much again to complete the setup for just that welder. PS: You will find out after a while that having multiple four inch angle grinders is nicer than having to change out whatever you have attached to your one angle grinder. PPS: Another thing to consider is that your clothing should be all cotton. The reason is that with many synthetic materials, they melt and there is nothing worse than having some sort of synthetic clothing material melt into your skin. I like the snap button all cotton shirts. The reason that I like them is that if you have to get them off or open them up in a hurry, you can. Welding jackets are affordable. One thing that you will find out after a while is that your shirts will be full of little holes.

Hi Tim, I would like to teach my daughter how to use my Lincoln AC 225 amp arc welder. Here is my question. Years ago I met a lady who struck an arc the first time and she went blind. Now she says that there is a test for the eyes to see if it safe for someone to weld before they try she says. Do you know anything about this or have you heard of it happening to anyone else before?

You don't need a huge welding machine. It really depends on the material thickness, but if you're looking at 1/8" wall thickness or thinner, just about any machine will do it.
Tim what would you recommend for cutting fence pipe and other metals in the shop. A portable bandsaw with a table or a chop saw. On the chop saw is it better to get the evolution type or abrasive. It's for a hobby/farm stuff. Thanks!
My grinder cut halfway through my finger the other day. it's a nasty feeling injury. feels much worse than a normal cut with something sharp. poxy fooking thing I hate it now.
Dang... I like fabrication stuff but I also do enjoy stick welding... I know it can still be done but it can feel so tedious than it should just trying to make a 1" run or some weird tight angle...
Unfortunately, I haven't done a big roundup of welding helmets, so I don't have a lot of recommendations. I use my Miller helmets with youth all the time and they adjust down without a problem.
Those are called pancakes and they're mostly used by pipeliners. I can't remember the exact reason but I think it's mostly cost effective. They're simple, take a standard lens and if you aren't cramming your head into tight spots the shape isn't an issue. The side shield is to keep you from getting spatter in your ear while you're doing your downhill pipe welds.
Jeff S is absolutely correct, and the reason for them being flat is A) to completely cover the face and B) for the thickness of it, pancakes are lighter then the traditional welding hoods.
Are these “courses” just grouped up videos from your TH-cam channel? Or are they different content only available through the course? I did a “class” before and was very disappointed it was mainly just repackaged TH-cam videos and it left me feeling ripped off. I’m very interested just hesitant due to past stuff. Love your videos by the way.
I bought the full package, and I'm happy with the lessons so far. I believe it's all new content, with a few short clips from YT mixed in. Shots of laying beads, that sort of thing. Each course has one preview lesson you can check out on a trial basis.

They make machine tool shops look bad in the perspective of a small shop tinkerers viability to make stuffs without selling internal organs to make monster equipment purchases.

Some welders do not use autodarkening helmets out of habit. It took me a long time to get used to an autodarkening helmet.

You don't need a huge welding machine. It really depends on the material thickness, but if you're looking at 1/8" wall thickness or thinner, just about any machine will do it.

Project Farm did a comparison of metal chop saws and included an abrasive cut off saw.
