- This time I'm building the blade tensioning system for the homemade portable band sawmill, turning blade guide rollers from 90 mm round stock in the old 1K62 lathe and fabricating roller shafts with grease canals in'em to make the bearings easily greaseable. Check it out!

Thanks for cheering me up. I do have thoughts sometimes to leave this project aside for a while since new project ideas have risen and preparations have been made but yous guys motivate me to finish this project. So I too hope to see it in action already. It is definitely not the best mill out there but it will be made according to my needs and hopefully after all of that work it will even cut some lumber. :D

I like the drilled/greasable bolts. I used some of of those when I rebuilt the shackles on an old land cruiser of mine. Very cool touch
I was thinking of slapping the blade guide rollers together just from a couple of bearings without the turned rollers themselves. But I thought this way, with the turned rollers and bearings inside'em with bolts that make the bearings easily greaseable is fancier and more durable, especially when they're pretty much permanently sprayed with water as blade lubricant all the time. It's an eye candy, at least for me. :D
Definitely. It always feels good to look at something and think, “I could have taken the easy road on this and got away with it but I didn’t and I’m proud of it and it will last my life time.” Love this build!
It’s looking Pret-ty good. The motorcycle wheels are looking like a very good choice for the saw. A coworker of mine made a bandsaw and used trailer tires but the rounded profile of a motorcycle tire looks more appropriate plus you already have a drive sprocket and if you wanted you could utilize the brakes on one wheel to stop the blade as well.

I do have doubts on the motorcycle wheels and their durability, but I will try them out. I also do like the rounded profile of the tire. At first I planned on using car rims but with the small spare donut tires on them that also have that round profile. But motorcycle wheels are what I had so I used'em. As a matter of fact - I was thinking about using the front drum brake on the mill, I have one as a spare in a box in the shelf if I wanted to use it so I don't have to take it away from the bike itself. I hope to make lumber already, can't wait anymore. :D

Love the sounds of the shop: Very purposeful and inviting. As always, great content and good editing. It's coming along well. Having the metal lathe really makes a difference for all the shafts and wheels you have to do to get it going.
Once you use the lathe you'll never go back making bushings or other round objects on a table grinder or angle grinder. :D

Hahaa! Yes, more stealing will most probably occur. My brother has made a huge mistake by leaving me unattended in the shop with access to his drawer of goodies. His mistake. :D "Peale" just means "on top" so I will place the parts in the right direction. I always like to put the welds in the tubes on the same side so the whole construction is the same.
you know i have been watching u build this and yes i have seen many of builds and i think u should sell them it is a great looking build and it looks like it cuts great when u start i want to be the first in line

How does the grease get in the bearings of the guide wheels for the blade? Don't you have to make holes in the shield of the bearings on the inside side? Or take the shields off?

Vaatasin kuidas keeret pingis peale lõikasid ja mul oli seda eestlasele omaselt kahjurõõmus vaadata. Olen ka ise nussinud keermeid selliselt lõigata ja käesoleval kevadel tegin omale siis uue keermelõikuri hoidja - kunagi tehtu varastati mingil ajal ära ja uut ei viitsinud kohe teha.
Mul on üks siuke vidin sulle välja pakkuda - ise pead tegema (materjaliks vali natuke parem kui S355; näiteks C45), aga mudelit jagan sulle, sealt saad ka vajalikud mõõdud. Võid teha ka pikema või siis suurema. Olen enam kui kindel, et kasutad SolidWorksi, siis selle kasutamine ei käi sulle üle jõu ja saad vajalikud mõõdud sealt kätte ;)
Mul videot keerme lõikamisest ei ole aga ülimalt lihtne on kasutada - tegin just kiire demo tööriistast. Eriti hea on sellega pikki keermeid sirgelt peale lõigata.

Pole hullu. Ma nii harva lõikan keermeid, et saan sedaviisi hakkama küll. Ei ole viitsinud seda spetsjomm asja veel valmis treida, aga olen kursis, et see eksisteerib. Õigus, kasutan SolidWorksi, see hea ja mugav. Tänud soovituse ja vaatamise eest! Sinu keermelõikur näeb hea välja. ;)

When you mount the guides, it is my understanding that they do no go in horizontal line with the bottom of the wheels. They sit lower than the bottom of the wheels. Not sure why. Check out other saws. Good luck ~P
Yes, you're right. They sit lower so the blade angle can be adjusted with the rollers so it is level in every way and doesn't start diving or climbing in the wood while cutting. That's what I'm gonna do too.

Learned first at home from father and grandfather and later in life self taught.

If you have the double adjustment on the one wheel, why didn't you use that as a tensioner? It would work the same as tensioning the chain on a motorcycle. Instead of adding it the middle?
Just give it some thought, you'll figure it out why I did what I did.

Another question, @12:32 you made a boult with grease point. It brings the grease between the barings in the roller. But the grease has nowhere to go, in the end it will push out the barings.....oh wait is that the purpose!? To be able to change the barings? It looked like closed barings, so they don't need grease. If they do, there must be a drilled hole in the roller where the old grease can escape.
Can you tell me your thought on this? 👍
They're not sealed bearings.
The bearings are closed only from one side, the open side points toward the center of the roller and grease can get in there.

I believed it is more cheaper to buy a lumber pro than to assembly a sawmill like this, but anyway you have a shop available to fabricate..
This mill was cheaper to build than to buy one and it is already earning the money I spent back with the lumber I've already cut with it. ;)
Can someone explain to me how the sawblade is going to stay on the wheels when sawing?
The guide rollers will take the cutting force and the blade will just keep on rolling on the wheels.
That was a huge drill bit, I'd hate to have to buy one that big these days. It would probably be so expensive o.O what size is it?
The one I used was 41 mm / 1.6 inches. The biggest I have is 50 mm / 1.97 inches.

Good stuff! The blades guides look great. Could the wheel tensioner mount on top so you would not have lost any height?
It could have been mounted on top but I was afraid it would start pushing the tensioning frame crooked. Right now the tensioning of the blade is in line with the center of the wheel so everything stays nicely lined up. I will probably change it up or at least modify it so I don't have to reach to the center of the mill to tension the blade or release the tension. But all that in the future. :D

Using oil will not reduce the heat but it will keep the drill bit from burning up from the friction and getting ruined. Thanks for watching! ;)
Have thought of a spring/damper as (automatic) tention device (in stead of) the boult you just made?
Or this will work also great, because of the air tyres, working as springs, to keep the tention on the saw blade even.

I have to make a damper for the tensioner when I eventually cast aluminium band wheels for this mill. But yeah, right now the tires will do. I think this mill will definitely see some modifications in the future. ;)

1. Why didn't you drill the hole in the part at 1:02 on the lathe?
2. Why didn't you part all the way off rather than part way through and then break?

My same wonderings. The lathe was the best machine for the task.
Cheers! It's better to drill deep when the work piece is vertical - the hole in it is vertical so the lubricant will lubricate the drill bit better. And it was faster to drill it in the drill press than in the lathe. I didn't part the piece all the way through just because I've wrecked many cut off blades by doing so. In the end of cutting the cut off piece starts to wobble and wedges the blade in the cut groove and snaps the blade. One can always cut wider but I just chose to keep it bigger in the center and just broke it off.

Usually partoff blades like to climb and must be dead center with the piece.
Drilling a hole then boring it out would eliminate multiple setups. Our manual lathes have KDK tool change systems to speed up things.

Tires generally cannot supply enough tension to the blade as a solid steel wheel and the tracking cannot be as 'backed up' it does not have a shoulder flange. Works to a degree of feed and pressure limits
To my knowledge no band saw wheels have a shoulder flange on them but correct me if I'm wrong. At least I haven't seen any. There's no need for the shoulder on the band wheels since the guide rollers/slider/bearings will support the cutting force. There's only radial force on the band wheels that occurs when the blade is pulled through the wood. And the pneumatic tires aren't really the best things to use I know, but it's what I have and what I'm using for R&D. I can change them later on.
Nice work Donn. You may find that those blade guides wear out prematurely. The ones you buy from Wood Mizer are case hardened. How do you plan on sharpening and setting your blades?
Thanks for the insight. I try them out and see how they perform. Maybe I'll just downgrade to just a set of bearings supporting the blade from the top and from behind. But we'll see. I'm planning on building a sharpener. But that's a future project.
Donn; what grade steel did you use for the guides? I used ball bearings for my mill and they get loose after a while; I'm using bar and chain oil mixed with diesel fuel for blade lube, and I think it's washing the bearings out! I'm not sure about turning my own unhardened guides, even though they are less cost than Cooksaw's at 59 dollars each. Any info would be appreciated; and I love your build, great job.
