I remember 2018, I started playing commander precons - then I decided: I will collect and keep they "as is", like a board game to play with friends and family. Then I started collecting older decks. And then only 2 years after, well, it is a commander deck per what now? one per week? I can't take, I'm out.
So basically do what they did in the beginning of the 2000’s a 3 set block a core set a stand alone set and yes they didn’t have commander decks back then but yes a once a year commander set would be nice ( I mean the decks ) and that commander deck set should come out with the stand alone set. So in short yes I agree
The brother's war is the best story wizards has ever told. I wasn't even aware of magic lore back then and even I feel nostalgia and excitement for the new set. I ordered two boxes out of pure hype. The fact that they feel the need to water down a reboot of their magnum opus with transformers of all things is proof that they aren't in touch with their customers.
Transformers’ inclusion has to be a Hasbro demand. Who is more likely to make this dumb decision - the suit in Wizards of the Coast who wants his product to sell well, or the suit in Hasbro who wants to make all of Hasbro’s IPs sell well? Not to say I’m a fan of WotC’s decisions (I don’t like set boosters for instance) but Transformers is just so wild.

When the price of a product fluctuates with bad markets thats one thing. The fact that the quality is now suffering is a whole different situation. Even during the 08-09 housing collapse wotc still printed good sets but hardly anyone had the money to buy them. Now the sets are garbage, over priced and before the end of the year a lot of us won't have the extra cash to buy them. So thanks for making this video Rudy. The main problem with Magic investments for the future is that today’s market is based upon the nostalgia of people who got into the game 20 years ago, and we remember the thrill of opening a foil rare here and there, and we knew how valuable that was. What will young people today remember in 20 years time? Most can’t afford collectors boxes, and all the special cards are in there. In 20 years time, will anyone remember the buzz of today’s magic? Or will it have all blurred into one big mess? Nostalgia dictates what is collectible in the future. Will any of these new sets provide a ‘nostalgic’ buzz to the young magic players of today? That’s the question WotC should be asking.

They need to drop prices to like draft $100-110 ish and set like $120-130 ish and collectors $180-200 ish. And I think they would sell much better. Maybe slow down on secret lairs like every 3-4 months. And just do decks for certain sets and not every set. And probably price them like $30-40. Also maybe print less.

Story. Bought a crimson vow draft box with friends to draft. Terrible recovery on card on value, lose. Had a lot of fun and got another box. Even worse value. Literally the best value card we got was a slug token ($7) for that one toxril mythic.

I like the tie in commander products, they were a great idea... when they were budget commander stuff. Like from Zenikar, to Kaldhime, those were fun decks, reasonably priced, sure it had some jank but that just meant "Hey, take the crap out and rebuild it, experiment, start here and fix it the way you want it." When they went back to premium priced commander decks for each set, well... I just can't afford that as an average Joe.
Will see I wouldn't be surprised if they reprint alot of the older cards and vintage cards. Wouldn't be surprised if they destroy the r list completely and just screw everyone.
I think Brothers War has more relevance like War of the Spark had, less than because of advertising not being focused as much. But it feels weird how on top of the chase epics and characters, you have even more "premium" Transformer cards that make it feel like you're not actually enjoying a magic product to begin with.
this time last year collector boxes would be 239-249 on amazon. now even with serialized cards amazon is at 219? all signs point to the market rejecting this product. why would I want a serialized card when by next year serialized cards will be a dime a dozen and they will have moved on to real artist signatures, then next year when they are embedding real pieces of urzas clothes into cards?
I think they have many employees that never played the game. Especially those working in marketing department. Only reason i can see the D&D tie they did with Commander Legends, JumpStart revamp of theme booster, addition of Transformers in Brother's War, do I need to explain the Double Feature dumpsterfire, etc. Clearly those people are disconnected from what the majority of players want and they do create things in order to justify their jobs.

All the Walmarts in my state got one little stock of Dominaria United booster products and that was it. I'm talking a couple 3pk draft boxes, a couple bundles, and half a stack of sleeved set boosters, and 12 collector packs... not a single restock of any booster product since. The Walmart near me was a large MTG volume location and still nothing. Weird.
My local walmart has pretty much turned the card game isle into a self check and candy isle. Meanwhile the grocery store I work at actually had a display of Pokemon booster packs by customer service randomly. Marked down 25% off from $6.99 cause why do we even have them.

As a player perspective, 50 bucks for a deck like Orzhov and gruul challenger decks, is a pretty good deal. But that's what i am, a player. I don't think in investing in such a bad stuff like collectible market is good for an under-development country with a volatile economy like the one i live (Brazil). Yes, i do agree that the number of products of the same line makes the building sloppy. If they did a once-a-year modern challenger deck line with 5 decks , instead of 8 decks, one for standard ( and who plays paper standard? ) and Pioneer. By making a product for Modern, you can reprint important cards from all the other formats above it ( Pioneer, standard) and some great pieces for the eternal formats. But tbh, if they ever do challenger decks for modern, they need to ban Modern Horizons as both entire collections. Also, as a player, i see that the main focus WOTC is giving to commander and FOMO market is actually the one ruining both market and the game. Just read the new Gix card. It is a commander card, standard legal and a mythic rare. they took the best spot in the whole collection, for a card that is half-baked in competitive formats because they want to push commander everywhere. Same with the tons and tons of legendary creatures. Before, getting a legendary would be like WOW, BONKERS! The card had a meaning to be restricted to one while on the field. Now, it is like... there's also a card that makes the same effect, but it's stackable. Also, collectible content became too much of an issue for players too. Mythics lost their mojo as the " wow, a mythic!" when we crack boosters. Right now, they're like, 1 chase card in the set that pays the entire box x 100 bad cards.

I wouldn't *only* be worried about a week-long (or more?) Black Friday/Cyber Monday dump. Q4 as a whole is going to be flopping to an end, and there could be some last-minute bulk giveaway at or after Christmas, getting the inventory out of the warehouse and into a revenue column for that all-important year-end sales analysis.
Prime Days were for the worst of the worst. Black Friday is for the bulk of their position. Year-end is for either for A) panic & desperation to get sales figures out of abysmal territory, or B) to sell off the good stuff that didn't quite sell off as they'd hoped it would. One way or another, they're going to flush the system. I am sure they're hoping for Scenario B, but I would plan for a little of both.

For the non-patron viewers: Rudy recently seems to be [MTG] only selling set boxes x3 boxes in one purchase (half case; $300ish) and the draft (not anymore, according to this video) for 88 (though not unfinity) His patreon is ideal for fab (and other product sales) buyers, and medium sized buys of magic. Not if you're looking to score and save on some non draft magic. I haven't seen him do single set boxes since I signed up. I agree with the decision to unload that way, but it's not for us who just buy a single [MTG] box at release or pre order. (Every fab and metazoo kit has looked rather badass, and there's always an exclusive item) Just dropping info I was unaware of upon sign up. Will have to bow out of my slot, as the only open slot available is the same as a monthly hbo subscription. (I don't enjoy a 15 per month thing)

I called it back at the start of covid, give it 5 years Hasbro will force WOTC to reprint the Reserved List INTO LEGAL FORMATS. Modern, Legacy, Vintage. We''ve got 3 years.
I see it as a simple supply and demand problem where there aren't as many Standard (constructed and draft) paper players to justify all the product types and variants of standard sets. A lower print run is the solution in my opinion.

Usually don't get into this side of magic but I enjoy the videos. However, I looked at singles prices for Dominaria United yesterday and my face dropped. There was only about 10 cards that were over 10 dollars, and the vast majority of the cards don't even reach a dollar with a very miniscule amount of outliers that were a few bucks. I've played magic since Odyssey and NEVER remember seeing things being this bad. I was actually about to cash out but after seeing prices I've decided to just boycott and see if these cards are worth anything in a few years

I hate to say it, but Rudy has a point. If they do another dump, which is almost a forgone conclusion, people need to avoid buying anything already on the market. Our stores already stopped stocking Jumpstart. New product is set and draft. We will keep commander decks. However, collector has become pre-order only. I keep buying a little Dominaria collector and Kamigawa set, but yeah it's getting ugly out there.
Yessir, once the consumers finally see they shouldnt commit to these high prices and wait for fire sales, suppliers/Hasbro will have to adjust. Just surprised it took this long for consumers to reject these prices. Secondary market almost always better, players should always buy singles.
True, Challenger Decks are for the players alone, meant to be opened and played with. All these reprint sets are on that bunch. Sad thing is, they killed the Jumpstart line along the way as nobody cares for these weak cards.

I think reducing the number of products is one of the keys to righting the WOTC MTG ship.
Reducing all exposure to newer product would be the best way, STAY THE COURSE just buy old mtg product.

All the Walmarts in my state got one little stock of Dominaria United booster products and that was it. I'm talking a couple 3pk draft boxes, a couple bundles, and half a stack of sleeved set boosters, and 12 collector packs... not a single restock of any booster product since. The Walmart near me was a large MTG volume location and still nothing.
Weird.
My local walmart has pretty much turned the card game isle into a self check and candy isle. Meanwhile the grocery store I work at actually had a display of Pokemon booster packs by customer service randomly. Marked down 25% off from $6.99 cause why do we even have them.

As a player perspective, 50 bucks for a deck like Orzhov and gruul challenger decks, is a pretty good deal.
But that's what i am, a player. I don't think in investing in such a bad stuff like collectible market is good for an under-development country with a volatile economy like the one i live (Brazil).
Yes, i do agree that the number of products of the same line makes the building sloppy. If they did a once-a-year modern challenger deck line with 5 decks , instead of 8 decks, one for standard ( and who plays paper standard? ) and Pioneer. By making a product for Modern, you can reprint important cards from all the other formats above it ( Pioneer, standard) and some great pieces for the eternal formats. But tbh, if they ever do challenger decks for modern, they need to ban Modern Horizons as both entire collections.
Also, as a player, i see that the main focus WOTC is giving to commander and FOMO market is actually the one ruining both market and the game. Just read the new Gix card. It is a commander card, standard legal and a mythic rare. they took the best spot in the whole collection, for a card that is half-baked in competitive formats because they want to push commander everywhere. Same with the tons and tons of legendary creatures. Before, getting a legendary would be like WOW, BONKERS! The card had a meaning to be restricted to one while on the field. Now, it is like... there's also a card that makes the same effect, but it's stackable.
Also, collectible content became too much of an issue for players too. Mythics lost their mojo as the " wow, a mythic!" when we crack boosters. Right now, they're like, 1 chase card in the set that pays the entire box x 100 bad cards.

Hasbro saw a huge demand spike last year. They realized MTG could make money and because WOTC is 85% of Hasbro’s revenue, Hasbro is trying to milk WOTC for every penny and get its first billion dollar IP.

Pappa Hasbro's product lines as far as toys have been absolutely destroyed by the "Message" being all Holly-Weird cares about and they brought that crap into MTG, what did people expect?
As a play rather than collect type person, it is interesting to see the philosophy that goes behind ordering and collecting products, and the thought process behind shelving product for LGS'.

Thanks for the heads up Rudy. Wizards dump to Amazon is definitely a big deal. No reason to buy "ANYTHING" around release. Wait and pick up product for pennies on the dollar from Amazon seems like the way to go.
I wouldn't *only* be worried about a week-long (or more?) Black Friday/Cyber Monday dump.
Q4 as a whole is going to be flopping to an end, and there could be some last-minute bulk giveaway at or after Christmas, getting the inventory out of the warehouse and into a revenue column for that all-important year-end sales analysis.
Prime Days were for the worst of the worst.
Black Friday is for the bulk of their position.
Year-end is for either for A) panic & desperation to get sales figures out of abysmal territory, or B) to sell off the good stuff that didn't quite sell off as they'd hoped it would.
One way or another, they're going to flush the system. I am sure they're hoping for Scenario B, but I would plan for a little of both.

I've dropped buying mtg every release and switched to flesh and blood. Fun game, and less over-saturation of product on the market
I still only order from my LGS, they provide me with players, Amazon does not.
For the non-patron viewers: Rudy recently seems to be [MTG] only selling set boxes x3 boxes in one purchase (half case; $300ish) and the draft (not anymore, according to this video) for 88 (though not unfinity)
His patreon is ideal for fab (and other product sales) buyers, and medium sized buys of magic. Not if you're looking to score and save on some non draft magic. I haven't seen him do single set boxes since I signed up. I agree with the decision to unload that way, but it's not for us who just buy a single [MTG] box at release or pre order. (Every fab and metazoo kit has looked rather badass, and there's always an exclusive item) Just dropping info I was unaware of upon sign up. Will have to bow out of my slot, as the only open slot available is the same as a monthly hbo subscription. (I don't enjoy a 15 per month thing)

The situation with distributors is interesting. I think they tasted the sweet profits that come from secret lair and amazon , they began to think they can start selling everything by themselves. After the Magic 30th anniversary secret lair fiasco they should of gotten a reality check. It is going to blow up in their face like when they attempted to get into esports.

I see it as a simple supply and demand problem where there aren't as many Standard (constructed and draft) paper players to justify all the product types and variants of standard sets. A lower print run is the solution in my opinion.
The demand is low partially due to the economy, partially due to Wizards’ stupidity.
I think a huge step in restoring customers faith and loyalty in MTG products would be too send out the crap we already paid for. Here's looking at you "Head's I win, tails you lose" deck.

Usually don't get into this side of magic but I enjoy the videos. However, I looked at singles prices for Dominaria United yesterday and my face dropped. There was only about 10 cards that were over 10 dollars, and the vast majority of the cards don't even reach a dollar with a very miniscule amount of outliers that were a few bucks. I've played magic since Odyssey and NEVER remember seeing things being this bad. I was actually about to cash out but after seeing prices I've decided to just boycott and see if these cards are worth anything in a few years

I hate to say it, but Rudy has a point. If they do another dump, which is almost a forgone conclusion, people need to avoid buying anything already on the market. Our stores already stopped stocking Jumpstart. New product is set and draft. We will keep commander decks. However, collector has become pre-order only. I keep buying a little Dominaria collector and Kamigawa set, but yeah it's getting ugly out there.
Yessir, once the consumers finally see they shouldnt commit to these high prices and wait for fire sales, suppliers/Hasbro will have to adjust. Just surprised it took this long for consumers to reject these prices. Secondary market almost always better, players should always buy singles.
True, Challenger Decks are for the players alone, meant to be opened and played with. All these reprint sets are on that bunch. Sad thing is, they killed the Jumpstart line along the way as nobody cares for these weak cards.
