The moment you said you listened to a darker shade of magic on audiobook my heart sank! The audiobook is definitely not good for this book. Reading the physical copy is such a better experience and I personally love Kell with my whole heart.

I totally agree about Darker Shade of Magic!! I felt the same way - loved the world and the concept, but felt the characters lacked something and I did not connect with them, sadly.
I read House Of Hollow few days ago and absolutely LOVED LOVED LOVED it, this book book really was a pleasant surprise to me! I'm searching for similar books since then...
A Darker Shade of Magic, the characters become far more complex and the relationships become more important as the books go on.

I'm currently reading House Of Hollow and really loving it !! It's definitely reminding me of Horrid by Katrina Leno and watch over me by Nina Lacour. Not only the covers of the books are similar but the vibes and stories as well!

I liked the second book on that V. E. Schwab trilogy a lot more. I felt the first book was more of a kind of setup. I haven’t read the third yet but second book made me want to continue the series!

I agree completely on the whole sharing your favorite books means sharing yourself. Exactly. Also, definitely going to put House of Hollow on my spooky autumn reading list. And, not at all related to this blog but, I'm reading a new book (out this year) called The Seventh Raven by David Elliott. It's a YA novella sized, fairy tale style story, done all in verse, with some illustrations. It reminded me of you because you liked the YA book I recommended about the life of Mary Shelley.

I agree af on your opinion with A Darker Shade Of Magic. I prefer character driven books over plot driven books. I rated it higher and considered to continue reading the series but Idk I am okay with the ending from the first book haha. Maybe I will pick it up one day but currently I really dont want to.

It’s interesting because so many people highly recommend the Darker Shade of Magic series, but I don’t get it. I have tried to read the first book four times and I have not been able to get through it. The Female of the Species, however, I LOVED.

I really didn’t like A Darker Shade of Magic either and I believe that it was for the same reasons as you. I physically read it too. I also like her middle grade books the most
I hated the end of House of Hollow🙁 I thought it ruined the whole book and I had loved it until then😒 I don’t read scary books at all because I’m a scaredy-cat but I was so intrigued by not only the cover but what was being said about it. I still enjoyed it regardless of the horrible ending although I’m glad you enjoyed it all. You’re always fun to watch 😀

I also gave A Darker Shade of Magic two stars.
For me it wasn't that the characters were boring, but more that they felt surface deep. I felt like the book was very convoluted too, and I didn't start enjoying it until the final quarter. I did go on to read the sequel, and I think the characters were more fleshed out, and I thought the pacing was better and it didn't feel so convoluted, but the book itself still wasn't good and honestly was a filler book. I do not know if I am going to continue the series. I might, and I also might not.
I'm currently rereading ADSOM! For VE Schwab, who is one of my favorite authors, I definitely wouldn't recommend her audiobooks, especially ADSOM - it's too slow and lyrical for audio. I would highly recommend continuing the series (it gets better) physically rather than on audio - only if you want to, though!
Also, it's worth noting that the shades of magic series was difficult for me to get into. I didn't love the first one, and I really liked the second book - but ever since then, for some reason, I've been craving a reread. Now I'm rereading the first one, and I think my original rating of a 3.5 or 4 will increase to a 4.5 or even more. I understand it now, even though I didn't fully get it the first time! Also it's sad to hear that you didn't like Lila and Kell - I know Kell doesn't seem to have much of a personality at the beginning, but he does. He’s thoughtful, caring, will do anything for his family, secretive, he hides and buries his emotions. I know he seems like a boring character, but I promise that he’s not!
Lila is actually one of my favorite fictional characters of all time! She just represents the bad-assery that I love to see in a female main character. And the second book (haven't read the third, so idk about that one) is a lot more character driven than plot driven. It focuses more on character relationships and introduces some really cool new characters! That book is a 4.5 for me (might be a 5 upon reread).

You’re not alone. I was very bored with a darker shade of magic and I read the physical book. Wasn’t very impressed with the second one either. I’m trying to read the invisible life of addie larue and I don’t know if I jive with her writing
The invisible life of addie larue is a bit slow the first 100 pages but it’s worth the read I promise

I started *A Darker Shade of Magic* on audiobook and immediately did not like the narrator so I stopped listening before the book was ruined... I have yet to go back with a physical copy, but I did LOVE *Vicious & Vengeful* and really loved V.E. Schwab's writing style.
A darker shade of magic is my favorite series! The audiobook is not good, you made a good decision on stopping the audiobook lol. The book is definitely a slow burn but it's so goood

Hi!!!! I personally loved An Unkindess in Magicians! That’s adult, let’s see if you want a YA series I reallllyy loved The Falling Kingdom series by Morgan Rhodes, if you’d like urban fantasy I’d say check out Elatsoe, and if you’d like a super whimsical fantasy book I really love Nevermoor which is a middle grade! And then for really really strange magic I loved The Ocean at the End of the Lane- but that book isn’t for everyone!

Could not agree more about a darker shade of magic audio! Totally ruined it for me! The way he made Lyla sound so whiny and childlike but Kell sounded like he just hit his 70th birthday 😂 I didn’t connect with either of them at all! So pleased it’s not just me!
