There was no-one like Jerry Lee even then. None of the other C&W singers in those days, except Ray Charles, managed to persuade me that they were actually feeling the things they were singing about, not even the women singers like Patsy Cline.

Absolutely 100% agree. If you like a song by any artist and want to hear the best version just check if JLL recorded and there you are. As good a singer as he is piano player. Plus he adds bits, changes it here and there, each subtly improving it and making it unmistakably a Killer song. One of a kind. The greatest artist of modern American music hands down. And he’s still doing it in 2020 !

You ask what it was about these wonderfully talenated entertainers, it was that they were real, their voices were real, there talents were real, what you saw and heard was what you got. These days, it's all techno, all about some 12 year old being made to look 20, with a voice elctronically enhanced. Thank goodness for you tube and all the incredible people who captured these very real people, and kept this footage, or we'd have nothing to remind us what real talent is. I love it all.

I'm with you 100% on his voice, the beste ver in th Country field for conveying emtions. I canna think of any popular music pianist that came up to his standard. I don't know about technique although it was obviously pretty good, but his playing dovetailed so superbly with his vocals. He must have been highly regarded to have been able to do so much piano session work after his marriage to his young cousin ended his initial Rock'n'Roll stardom.

This particular song is one of Jerry Lee's greatest "pure country" recordings! He pivoted from rock to country to salvage his career after a marriage to his 13 year old cousin. Not many artists could accomplish what the Killer did and this prolonged his career and made him into a legend in his own time! My band and I opened for Jerry Lee early in his career in West Monroe, Louisiana (May 1959) when he had a few singles out including his "Whole Lot of Shakin', etc. The Ferriday,LA Wildman!!!!

You have just listened to one of the truly Greatest singers we have ever had. What was it about the 50S and 60S that produced these once in a life time talents? What an era that was. There will never, ever, be another era like that one.

at the 57 second mark he starts a sustained trill with his right hand and sings over it flawlessly. Happy Birthday Jerry Lee.

Jerry Lee and Kenny are a great team right up there with the greatest musical partnerships ever, together for well over 50 years now, As Jerry lee has said often 'Kenny knows how to Get it, get it, get it and get it some more musically speaking that is'.....Jerry lee is the greatest all round performer imo, right up there with Elvis.

He was proud because he was at the crossroads of his career. Somebody suggested "COUNTRY MUSIC"..Critics said.."HE CAN'T DO COUNTRY MUSIC". He recorded Two albums back to back: "ANOTHER PLACE, ANOTHER TIME and "SHE EVEN WOKE ME UP SAY GOODBYE". Both went to #1. Both are two of the greatest country albums ever recorded.

The Killer threw down an eternally great one here. This should be shown to every current “country” artist because Jerry Lee set the bar high and no one in today’s country comes close to this.

That performance is so beautiful. Almost exactly the way it was recorded! .I saw Jerry Lee at Milwaukee Music Fest about 15 years ago along with Johnny Rivers..When he did Great Balls of Fire, the people just came up out of their seats, went down on the dirt and started dancing..That was really cool! I would love to go hear a group that could do justice to this song..

For whatever reason, I wasn't aware of JLL's country stylings. Recently I started listening to it and I'm freaked at how incredible it is. I guess I thought his stuff after Sun wasn't worth listening to. What a dope I am! Country Music Hall of Fame - what are you waiting for???
