This was awesome! There was so much demonstrated and taught in clean voice, grit, and even some recording tips. Thank you Chris!! Loved your singing to your audience!! I'm so happy for you, that you are doing what you love to do!!! It shows in every video and course you put out there.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain..lol. The magic behind this song broken down so perfectly, not usually a fan of learning a magician’s tricks, but extremely educational, a necessary reveal. Makes me consider why new singers attempting to replicate these artists with assisted auto tune etc actually makes them much stronger singers, since they are attempting to match their idols and their electronic enhancements..
Hey Chris, pretty sure you know this already but if you put a compressor on the end of a long decay reverb/delay chain and sidechain it to the original vocal it prevents said vocal from getting too muddy/washed by ducking the effect ever so slightly, pretty sure they used a similar trick here. It was my 2cts, anyway keep up the good work, great analysis as always.
Not only do I love the dual breakdown of both vocal analysis and engineering work, but I also want to hear _your_ cover of this now. You have a great voice yourself.
I was trying the grit, and I started by pushing a lot at first, and I was getting very tired, but then, my body by itself acomodated the sound into my whole singing system and I was able to kinda do it, without so much effort. Sometimes it's like the body was like "oh, so you want to do that, ok ok, let's not do it this way, let's try this way, it's less demanding". You get that only by practicing a lot, and David's voice is so rich, that is a pleasure to study, because makes you discover a lot from our own voice. It would be very fun to analyse those "ow wa ah ah aow!" so characteristic of Disturbed. Thanks for bringing this to the table Chris, waiting to see more Draiman!
Yep, it’s almost like when you’re looking at one of those stereogram pictures. At first you have to force yourself to cross and uncross your eyes to make the picture appear but if you’ve been doing it a lot then the image will just appear with minimal effort.
You have a great ear, Chris. It's uncommon. It's great how you use your ears constantly and make detailed listening front and center in all your videos. Love it! You're a stand out, man!
Im excited that you said there's going to be more Disturbed. Would love a breakdown of their originals, maybe The Night or Overburdened. Something with his harsh vocals would be awesome too, Enough, My Child. Im sure you'll pick a great one!
Thank you so much, Chris! While I think guys like Robert Plant and Chris Cornell sound amazing, I don't want to sing like them; I want to sing like this! Your tips, especially the facial resonance one REALLY helped me get closer to what I want to sound like!
First things first, You have an amazing voice Chris, watching your vids makes so much areas in singing a lot easier to understand. You got a unique way of explaining how things feel which is very important. Thank you for sharing your knowledge .....keep'em coming please
Have been waiting for this one for a long time...excellent job, analysis, and tips!! Looking very much forward to more David Draiman and/or Disturbed (his band Device would be cool, too!). He actually also just released a new single as a featured/guest vocalist on Nita Strauss's "Dead Inside" a few days ago.
Wow, LOVE this breakdown! I'm brand-new to singing (been an instrumentalist all my life) so it's like hearing all that's supposed to be going on while doing a yoga pose and trying to not get overwhelmed and just take it in at the pace I can. Looking forward to the next Sing Together class!
I love watching Your collabs with other singers from the modern metal scene. Please do some more, as there is a sea of talents to pick from, maybe someone would be able to show up at Your place again! Sadly, as I've moved to the block I feel mentally unable to practise properly since and unlock my full volume without this awkward feeling, but those videos are still very enjoyable to watch for me for over a year now. Kudos Chris!
Literally was looking through your videos last night to see if you had one on Draiman and was actually surprised that you didn't, as always tho awesome analysis! You should totally consider doing Justin Furstenfeld from Blue October!! I feel he's really underrated and really overlooked, like he's freakin amazing. Especially his vocals on "Hate Me" live
Awesome as always, Chris! Wow, as a baritone this is so fun to sing to, and you delivered such a valuable and thoughtful breakdown. After a few run-throughs might jam this at karaoke tonight!
I sing at karaoke joints quite a bit, and almost always, people ask me "how are you able to sing like that?". Going forward, I'll probably just point them to this video, because this is exactly how it's done. Cheers!
I appreciat this so much. Since I discovered your videos you've convinced me you're really the coach I want to learn from. Also at first I thought when you go into details about the effects it's more for producers than for vocalists, but I just had the epiphany that this is vital for me to separate which sounds I can sing and which are produced. In the past it has happened often that I'm not sure if what I'm hearing is even humanly possible, or wondering why I sound so much worse even though I feel like I'm nailing it when it could just be an effect I didn't recognise.
@@chrisliepe yes! this video was really important to me as a baritone.... I felt I have distorted my voice imitating too many high pitched tenor pop singers and must step back and relax the voice so it becomes Natural again and this video kind of helped me as a baritone to understand this even if I cannot yet do that...
You already hearted my comment on the bowie video I made about Tobias forge, so I will only say, incredible work, excited to see more man, I’ll be watching your content with a close eye as a drummer and an aspiring singer. Your NiN video has done wonders to help me find my own sound!!
Oh my God this is by far my all-time favorite band and cover of the sound of silence and just so that you know I am also a singer so I’m going to cover the song as well in the future
DISTURBED!!!! FINALLY!!! THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU. P.S. John Cooper(Skillet) is an amazingly advanced singer. He hides it very well but it’s there and would be great to analyze
Oof! Even though I'm not a metal fan at all, I think that if there's any singer who's a catch-all metal vocalist, it's David Draiman. Love his grit and raw energy.
Please, please do a breakdown of Mudvayne's 'Determined' (while watching the music video, it shows him in the studio which is even better). I want to hear your analysis and try to dissect the different screams and your versions of them!
Thank you for pointing out that this performance was pitch corrected. I absolutely think pitch correction is unnecessary for great singers such as David - overused tech ruining good musicians.
Stellar breakdown Chris! Top shelf. Here's a suggestion out of left field...how about an analysis of Roger Waters? He has some super angsty and bone chilling grit, some very vulnerable almost whimpering and a lot in between. Not to even mention his unique inhaled scream from the early recordings. I'd love to see it and I know you would do him justice.
Wow, incredible voices and fascinating to see how much information you can get out of this. I would really love to see one of these videos for "Without you" by Symphony X :O
Such a great breakdown of things. I guess one reason I struggle with getting grit at certain points is because I've still yet to really find my vocal break I guess. I can do either straight screams or straight cleans with the occasional grit working it's way into my cleans to get that tone. But I am unable to do it at will. Idk. Either way, love the videos Chris 😁🤘
@5:56 - I try to score every song I cover vocally. It's not easy. You really want to write down everything you hear, but how? It would be nice to have a notation. I guess if you know how to read and write music inside-out, you could do it. I start by working line by line, and writing all the lyrics down as I go. It's work, but it really makes a huge difference in the end result. Ideally, you should be able to overlay your vocal cover over the original and have them align perfectly. The closer to that ideal, the better.
Hey there! First of all I want to thank you for all the (really wonderful) content that you are putting out! I have watched hours of it and just can't get enough. Am also thinking about starting some of the courses. So thanks and greaaaat job!!! Now a suggestion: you should definitely check out Daniel Gildenlow from the band Pain of Salvation (a great band). A very versatile singer in his prime. You can start with the song Iter Impius (there is a live version from the "BE" concert) if you'd like. Would love to hear opinions.
Classifications can be so arbitrary sometimes. If you look at my natural chest voice range and my vocal timbre, on paper I'm a baritone... strange huh!?
@@chrisliepe yeah but i was seeing this video where this opera singer stated something, which to me sounded like that what you call mix voice is part of their full voice range. whichever it may be, youare a great singer Chris!!!

You're a great teacher, Chris! But the way you do grit is not always correct. This is why you sing this same phrase it sounds too yelly, not that pleasant for ears
That is correct. David does not use the ANY supraglottal noise, which is how he maintains the space in the posterior vocal tract for maximum resonance. I know this because I am his vocal teacher.

It really is! So consistent and wonderful and able to be channeled in any part of his voice!
