Is the new Harley-Davidson Pan America good for low speed handling?

  • We finally had a rider with a Harley-Davidson Pan America come to my class. In addition, a rider claimed his problems were the bike and not him. For the first time ever, he was correct, it was the bike!

    This weekend one of my students brought Pan America to my class. I tried it through the course, and it's awesome! Absolutely magnificent handling for such a bike, definitely better than 1250GS. For me felt closer to Multistrada, maybe even better. Never thought that Harley can make a good adventure bike, huge surprise. Hope it will sell well!)

      Jerry, the Pan America I tested the throttle had to be turned pretty far to get the revs up which I found tricky vs my "heritage Classic"! Were you in "sport mode" ?

      Interesting Motor Control, your You Tube description says nothing about your instructional classes, or what you do that would make you an expert at understanding the differences between the GS and Pan America. Sounds fishy.

    Lost my practice parking lot due to The old Kmart store down on Oakland Park Blvd was bought and just bulldozed down.So I won't let that get to me.I just have to find a new spot to set up my cones and then be able to continue to practice.Even though IV been riding for years you can never practice enough especially living in South Florida.Lots of crazy drivers down here.So I fill it's always worth taking the time to practice as much as possible reguardless of how many mile I have under my belt.That Pan Am was a joy to see going thru the course.Kinda reminded me of my old 1969 CB 350 Honda Induro bike Which was what I had started to learn to ride.Man I'm getting old.L.O.L

    I think Harley made some good decisions this year with the Pan Am and the Sportster S they're def changing their image and opening themselves up to a whole new demographic of riders

    • @Andrewoval
      @Andrewoval 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with what you said but I still think pricing is a major issue. I think the new sporster is still over priced compared to the previous generation. 15k is quite steep, atleast its arguable with the pan america competing with bmw 1250gs.

    I haven’t seen it mentioned, but I thought these PanAm’s came with steering dampers. That’d definitely explain the reluctant steering mentioned at the beginning of the video.

    Of course the Pan America is a great handling bike with that wheelbase and rake. Harley did a nice job on that bike! I ride a 2000 Softail standard, but would love to have a Harley adventure bike.

    No surprise.... A daily rider since 89 and always a group of MCs in the garage. A few HDs, ADVs, sportbikes, etc. The ADVs are without a doubt (for me) is absolutely the best all around bike. Touring, commuting, twisties, all. If I had a garage fire the ADV would be the 1st to be replaced with the ins check. A police version of the PA would be a great idea. Our dept shuns riding the HD baggers. EVERYONE prefers patrolling on Beemers.

    I had a similar issue on my Indian Scout. I replaced the seat, and then I was unable to get the bars to full lock without them hitting my knees. Stock bars, but had floorboards. I rotated the bars up a little, and had no issues after that.

    I bought my second yamaha it's Super Tenere 1200ze and keep my Vstar 1300. What I could say after few weeks, ridind heavy adventure tourer bike after cruiser - like a cheating. But, it also works wise verso. After some training days with adventure tourer on a race track, riding cruiser became easer and nicer than it was before. Summarise: More practice, more fun. Notwithstanding of type of motorcycle you ride.
    PS PanAm looks pretty much nice, perhaps I'll consider her after couple of years

      I'd start with large circles and slowly tighten them as you get comfortable with feeling the bike lean. That had helped me A LOT. Also, I know its a simple thing but make sure to check your tire pressure. Incorrect pressure can make the bike feel squirrely and more unstable. Just my 2 cents. Good luck brother!
