Totally agree with Chris Russo's assessment of the situation insofar as Mike, CMB, and FAN. He continues to be a stand up guy in addressing these issues and that is something to be respected.
I know I get heat for saying this but I agree with Andrew Bailey's comments below. Mike IMO should have turned the page and joined Chris on XM. Francesa would have still have his own show a couple of days a week including his long time Sunday NFL show during the Fall and Early Winter. Not to mention sharing the Friday afternoon show with Russo. (Mike and Chris still sound better together IMO even in recent reunions in recent years.) Plus Mike often talked "National Sports Topics" on his show in the past and I assume during this reboot as well. Thus if Mike joined Russo's station he could still talked national topics from a NYC point of view, that Chris already does. The Carlin text and also most important CMB's horrible ratings, played a huge role in Francesa's return to WFAN. Even if the good ratings return, Francesa has lost some credibility and created lower morale at WFAN. Most if not all of the major weekday hosts and on-air staff now can't stand him. In other words, it will IMO create the same uncomfortable work environment that happened at NBC in the last couple of years when Jay Leno's rebooted tenure at the Tonight Show in the early 2010's.(despite Jay beating Letterman in the ratings in the last few years of their battle). I might still listen to Mike's first few shows back in May '18, but because of this drama, I don't think I go out of the way anymore as i have for most of adult life to try to listen to Francesa or a decade plus earlier ":Mike and the Mad Dog". Thus I think I listen now more to Chris's show here on TH-cam(when I get home from work since I don't have access to XM for now)or even for local NYC sportstalk the Micheal Kay Show.
They were offered it, they did not want it and I don't blame them. Its not about money but if your work day ended at 1 or 2 pm and you had the rest of the day to do what you want, that's the life. Those afternoon hours are brutal.
I agree with Mad Dog about a "3 person talk show" being a disaster. Horrible idea on the FAN's part. Same thing with the Michael Kay Show. Everyone tries to talk over each other trying to be funny. Too much "schtick".
One shortcoming with any three person format is that the callers get diminished. And in the history of WFAN, some real characters emerged amongst the regular callers. Often with the three person format the caller's comment/question is kept very brief to allow all three to respond. Another bad effect is when two of the three hosts (naturally, fairly) team up in opposition to the gist of the call, and in agreeing then shift the topic away from caller's sports concern to the hosts' own friendship/relationship.
Mike is not the only one coming out of retirement! Reports say they have spotted Julio driving North and was last seen in Virginia driving at speeds well over 100 mph. *DESTINATION: Manhasset, NY* *ETA: Tuesday, May 1st 2018....10AM.....SHARP!* *ASSIGNMENT: PICK UP THE BOSS...SAVE NY SPORTS RADIO!*
I agree with the people who don't like this move. Mike should have gone to Sirius and done his own show and maybe a couple of days a week with Mad Dog. That would have been great. But to return to WFAN looks like a bush league move especially when you factor in the 18 month dog and pony show and countdown to his departure. I have always been a fan and a defender of Mike but I cannot defend this at all. He totally undercut the CMB crew and like them or not..this move by Mike comes off as petty and classless. Just because Mike could have returned to WFAN it doesn't mean he should have.
This. I don't particularly like CMB like many, but the FAN gave them 4 lousy months? Mike thought the market for his talent was greater than it actually is. This looks bush league.
I completely agree with Dog baseball is number 1 in N.Y. I said that day 1 why it wouldn't work...more then anything I look forward to Mets and Yankees talk and the person or persons must know what there talking about in this town
Michael DePinto I said the exact same thing about baseball in NY right when that garbage midday show started. I actually feel bad for maggie as she seems far more knowledgeable than those other two dopes.
And it will be an absolute travesty if they cut Joe and Evans show in half. They should stick them in the morning as bad as they are they're more listenable than boomer and that's not saying much.
660 AM in New York, carried the METS broadcasts since the METS started in NY. I remember it well. They also used to broadcast JETS games. Years ago, they dropped the JETS in favor of the Giants. Then, they dropped the METS. When they broadcast the METS/JETS they were number one in the country. The slide started, when they dropped the JETS and now, it is complete. Michael Stanley - Technically the Mets radio home was WHN 1050 AM from 1962-1987. In 1987 WFAN was born and broadcast over 1050. Later in '87 WNBC 66 AM disbanded and became SportsRadio 66 WFAN.
Martin Caidin hey cops in nyc retire at age 40 to 45, then they get a job in private security or private investigations. They're still retired from nypd.
Gotta love Chris Russo. Not only his he sports knowledgeable, but he is a regular guy like you and me. His tone regarding the Mike F thing was awesome. Never realized what he said, about the money not being there after many years, amazing listen. Having said that, I did not mind the new afternoon show on FAN, it wasn't as bad as everyone says, there are just whining and / or haters. For god's sakes, this is only sports talk radio.
Jay Leno retires from the Tonight Show replaced by Conan O'Brien...Jay Leno unretires and resumes hosting the Tonight Show sending Conan packing. Conan had a nice landing spot..can't say the same thing will happen for Maggie, Bart and Chris.
This soap opera is exactly WFAN's version of the Jay/Conan Late Night TV controversy part deuce of 2009/2010. Mike retired a couple of years too early. Francesa and WFAN should have just reduced his afternoon show to say 3-630pm (then the start of most Yankees games during MLB season)and even allow Mike to do his show from his Long Island home on most days. Hell Rush now does most of his shows from his home in Florida. While Chris, Maggie and Bart were terrible replacement for Mike, the CMB team were also thrown under the bus as well by WFAN. Only bright spot for the CMB, they are still keeping their show in a better suited early afternoon shift of 1-3pm along with any fill-in time for Mike and other FAN shows.. Now WFAN will have a couple of years to find a true and proper long term successor to Mike. And again on Chris's comments on the return of Francesa to WFAN and the soap opera around it, is spot on.
Matthew here the NYPost story on 4/24/18 confirming that the CMB will be placed in the new 1-3pm time slot. nypost.com/2018/04/24/how-mike-francesas-replacements-are-handling-his-return/ Not saying i agree with keeping the CMB team, but WFAN is trying to save face with this mismatched failure. While they are not a good listen, being fair CMB gave up other jobs i.e ESPN NFL analyst with Bart, Carlin leaving as the Lead Prime time Afternoon Host At Philly's WIP-AM and Maggie as the online-video host/columnist at Sports Illustrated to take this former Mike and the Mad Dog gig. As Chris said, they all got a 2-year contract but IMO they should be allowed to work other gigs as well outside of WFAN with Mike coming back.
Biggest loser of this change is Joe and Evan now cut back an hour to 10am-1pm. Ideally this is what FAN should have adjusted keeping both Francesa and CMB. 9am-1pm Joe and Evan 1-3pm CMB 3-630(or 7pm-off MLB season) Mike. I would have cut a hour off the Boomer and Gio show.
Income adjustment? Lol. Yeah dawgs life was destroyed he probably went from 3 million a year to 2 million or something and he had to take a second job. Lol. I wonder if he realizes how ridiculous he sounds sometimes... I do have to say it would have been amazing to hear them back together again though.
Your point is perfectly understood, but the bigger point is that if you're used to a certain standard of living- regardless of how much or little you make- you must make a considerable adjustment when your salary decreases. Doesn't mean you gotta' feel sorry for the guy, but Dog wasn't crying "oh poor me", he was simply making a point and a valid one at that.
agree with you Phillip F......but i guess it makes him look bad to others, not to himself! If that makes sense. The show on currently in his old time slot is VERY bad! I listened to it on and off for a few weeks! It is a difficult listen!
It's not like that at all. Leno announced five years prior he was handing the show over to Conan. Jay didn't even retire or leave NBC, he had a horrible prime time show on NBC that failed. Conan had an established show on late nite for like 16 years by that point and had a dedicated audience, which was why NBC wanted to make sure he wasn't going anywhere when they gave him the show. years before. WFAN had little to no plan when Mike left. He didn't publicly promise to pass the torch to another established performer years before then go back on his word.
Mike should have gone to Sirius with Russo. But it shows you how consolidated radio ownership has limited choices for listeners. It’s unbelievable that only options were second fiddle to Russo or crawl back to the FAN.
Now what needs to happen is Mike and the Dog getting back together if only for a period of time. Even doing a few shows a week together. Something like this.
Carlin, and those two other fools are straight GARBAGE! They are UNHEARABLE! yes that's a word! Mike will SAVE that station! They are dead without him...it's the best news I've heard in a while and I'm going to cherish and embrace every second of it! Who cares about the logistics of it...just welcome the man back! His personality and knowledge is unparalleled!
Mike is pulling a Jay Leno. These Baby Boomers think the world cant go on with out them. I listened to him since the beginning, thought he left with head held high but I wont tune in now. I dont love CMB and agree 3 in the booth is a huge mistake but this is not the way to fix it.
Lol it was absolutely nothing like Jay Leno. Mike didn't announce that he was passing the torch and handing over the show in five years to another established performer that had proven themselves like Leno. Jay didn't even retire altogether, he stayed on NBC and had a horrible prime time show that failed before coming back.
Overall, no matter if you hate or love the so called sports pope, i say this. This drama on WFAN has overshadowed even the all of the sports action on the field/ice at least here in the NY tabloid sports sections. In case you have not paid attention with a brief recap lol. As of this morning lol (4/26/18)first both the Yankees and Mets are both if they stay healthy laying the groundwork for both being should be serious playoff contenders this season. Plus, a good start to both the NHL and NBA playoffs even without the Knicks, Rangers or any other NYC area club in it. In the NBA, Lebron is by himself trying for the Cavs to prevent the Pacers from scoring a shocking 1st round upset. While the Vegas Knights continue their possible "miracle run" towards the Stanley Cup. And don't forget the NFL draft is tonight (4/26/18)that will determine the future of both the Giants and Jets for at least the next 5-6 years, maybe more. Just shows, how many people these days in era of social media ,love any form of controversy and soap opera drama even over on the field of sports. Whether it's in the current white House drama in 2018 or closer to home the "Francesa vs CMB" controversy on WFAN lol. And this sports flash is sponsored by TMZ lol.
Do lots of people still listen to free radio? Growing up in 70's and 80's radio was huge and Francesa became a very important media figure in the late 80's early 90's. Today? It must be a quarter of the size. They should have replaced Mike with a person the older fan base would enjoy.
How many people actually listen to these shows live? 1-6 it is on. Aren't 99% of people working? Isn't why podcasting has blown up because people just download them anytime? That many retired folks listening to this stuff?
All Francesca did was talk about his numerous opportunities and that he was done with the FAN. Then to go on a farewell tour and accept presents and appreciation along the way!!!!!! Dog should go back to hating Francesa. I don't think Francesa thought anything of Dog until maybe he left the station!!!!
Goodbye Tour for a Year...Celebrities calling up and kissing his ring saying goodbye and crying...Comes back "3" months later....Good 1 Mike...And his excuse for coming back was cause of his "App" he claims...Yet his App could not pay for 3 cans of Cat food...What an obsessive liar...Fat boy Francesa thought everyone would be banging his door down to give him work...Nobody came knocking so he came back to the Fan....
Mike would never have gone to Sirius, but I bet deep down he privately realizes he and Chris should’ve stayed together. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
" you can't put three people together who never worked with each other before." So dog, you and Mike worked with each other in the past when you were set up in 1987?
It looks bad, with the farewell tour and all, the big goodbye.... but all of that will be out the window when I hear him on the air again. I won't care. I hope he doesn't make a big deal out of it. Just start talking Yanks Mets and NFL draft picks. Everything will be right in about 60 seconds once he starts up again.
Francesa had to come back to WFAN. Where was he going to go? WOR -710? CBS -880? If he did that, he would be competing against WFAN. That wasn't going to happen. I think CMB are ok, but it's not must listen to radio. The are fine, but not must listen to radio. Maybe someday they will be. Francesa is must listen to radio. Case Closed!
Francesa is the Jay Leno of sports talk radio. Like Leno screwed Conan, Fraudcesa is screwing CMB. This is coming from me who actually have always liked Mike.
CMG were hemorrhaging the ratings that they inherited from Mike. They would have been fired in 3 months if Mike didn't come back. This actually helps them stay longer.
Ridiculous comparison. Conan was an established show with an established audience, which was why NBC pushed Leno out and had him go on the Tonight Show in 2004 and announce Conan was taking over in five years. FAN wanted Mike to stay.
@@e2go Not at all. I'm talking about Leno coming back after Conan took over. Not being established and wanting Mike to stay doesn't make it right. Plus, NBC was ridiculous to announce five years in advance who is taking over.
When Mike left I found a few podcasts I really got into like bill Simmons. I’m not sure if I will completely tune back into mikey full time like I used to.
Totally agree with Chris Russo's assessment of the situation insofar as Mike, CMB, and FAN. He continues to be a stand up guy in addressing these issues and that is something to be respected.

FYI. I would have put Joe and Evan in the 3-7pm spot(630pm during the MLB season for most Yankees games.)instead of bringing back Mike.
They were offered it, they did not want it and I don't blame them. Its not about money but if your work day ended at 1 or 2 pm and you had the rest of the day to do what you want, that's the life. Those afternoon hours are brutal.
AmericanGiant100 they are the rodney dangerfields of wfan
Damn I wish Sirius and Mike were able to work out this deal
Agreed Andrew. Read my comments above.
Mike and dog 2 would have been awesome.
So glad mikes back...he's the best sports talk commentator out there!!!!!...welcome back francessa..ok...listen....ok....
WFAN has been horrible without him. I don't know what they were thinking about when they put that replacement show together. It will never be good.
Except Evan and Joe. They are awesome
I agree with Mad Dog about a "3 person talk show" being a disaster. Horrible idea on the FAN's part. Same thing with the Michael Kay Show. Everyone tries to talk over each other trying to be funny. Too much "schtick".
Jim Pimmers How? Boomer and Gio and Joe and Evan shows are better than his. CMB is way better....Mike Sucks!
One shortcoming with any three person format is that the callers get diminished. And in the history of WFAN, some real characters emerged amongst the regular callers. They were more concerned with being politcally correct then just getting the best person or persons for the slot.
I admire Dogs honesty. i wonder if Dog is a bit upset that Francesa didnt join Sirius. Well, it is what it is now.
Allie DEROSA i would say more disappointed than upset.
This is great radio by mad dog! I knew that once I heard the name “Chris Carlin,” that failure was the only option.
Joey Bling his lisp and helium voice are awful for afternoon talk.
Lol
JULIO!!!! GAS UP THE MERCEDES....DADDY IS COMING HOME!!!!
Titts McGee lmao
Mike is not the only one coming out of retirement! Reports say they have spotted Julio driving North and was last seen in Virginia driving at speeds well over 100 mph.

Life is not the same with out Mikes voice . On the ride home .thank God
I changed the preset on my car after Mike left. I guess i have to find wfan again :)

Divine Oneness - you nailed it.
Mr. Bronx61 I appreciate you saying that. It's nice to know that there are other voices of reason out there.
This. I don't particularly like CMB like many, but the FAN gave them 4 lousy months? Mike thought the market for his talent was greater than it actually is. This looks bush league.
Yeah I would have preferred Mike Francesca going to Sirius XM and getting his own show etc.

THE POPE IS BACK. YES!
Yes!!
LOL @ Russo trashing his family and saying he hates spending any time with them..
dbreiden83080 lmfao!
I like Russo’s honesty. He leaves it all out there. I do miss that.
660 AM in New York, carried the METS broadcasts since the METS started in NY. I remember it well.

WNBC/WFAN (as far as sports go) was always "the working man's station".
RIP WFAN
Michael Stanley Why the hell are you capitalizing all the teams names lol
I wanted to?
Michael Stanley - Technically the Mets radio home was WHN 1050 AM from 1962-1987. In 1987 WFAN was born and broadcast over 1050. Later in '87 WNBC 66 AM disbanded and became SportsRadio 66 WFAN.
Ummmm Not on my radio. I lived in NY and the METS were found on 660 WNBC from AT LEAST 1969
Then you just don't know. I have no reason to make this up. Look it up.
RIP Michael Kay...The pope is back!!👊
I can't wait to listen to Kay to hear what he says. He probably woke up mad thinking his ratings is gonna go down and big time.
Kay is still on the air? I would of thought he get canned by now.
I hate francesca but i hate kay even more.
He left the Fan, but he didn't RETIRE. He ALWAYS said he'd be working somewhere else once his contract was up in April. Stop spreading misinformation.

This is big news here in New York...I know people across the country can care less
I'm so happy today
Francesa is the only guy who can strut while he crawls.
Mike took a paycut!!! Good for the Fan!!! It would have been great if he went to Sirrius.
Chris was always the magnanimous and agreeable one.
I haven't spent a second listening to the new show.
I spent like 15 mins here and there. It's awful.
Sorry Sirius there's nothing like free radio..
Same fvcking here!,
(excuse my language)
@Allan - Its effing BADD!
A real sports person knows, everything on the Radio is Junk (except IMUS)
The afternoon drive is awful !!!

I’m convinced that, at some point in his life, Russo was kicked in the head by a horse!!
All Francesca did was talk about his numerous opportunities and that he was done with the FAN. Then to go on a farewell tour and accept presents and appreciation along the way!!!!!! Dog should go back to hating Francesa. I don't think Francesa thought anything of Dog until maybe he left the station!!!!
yea he is back sunday football show back
Goodbye Tour for a Year...Celebrities calling up and kissing his ring saying goodbye and crying...Comes back "3" months later....Good 1 Mike...And his excuse for coming back was cause of his "App" he claims...Yet his App could not pay for 3 cans of Cat food...What an obsessive liar...Fat boy Francesa thought everyone would be banging his door down to give him work...Nobody came knocking so he came back to the Fan....
Mike would never have gone to Sirius, but I bet deep down he privately realizes he and Chris should’ve stayed together. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
I keep thinking this is sour shoes lol
Mike's show has not been the same since he returned. He has lost a little something. I don't think it will end well at WFAN
I think he’s wrong. I think fan begged him to come back
As bad as the afternoon show has been,It still beat its competitor (ESPN) in ratings
Steven Rivera actually you’re wrong the Michael Kay shoe won SLIGHTLY
We're really gonna hear about the Yanx now.
" you can't put three people together who never worked with each other before." So dog, you and Mike worked with each other in the past when you were set up in 1987?
Its different people sports radio was not established then, so it was the beginning you could say. But 30 years later, the standards has changed.
I know Mike was a big guy but how do him and Chris equate to 3 people. Two people works but three is a crowd on talk radio.
I was so tired of mike. Damn, just like an Athlete who just doesn't know when to quit
Mad dog is a 100% right you CANNOT do ny sports radio and not know baseball #bartscott #sorrynotsorry
how did mike sign for less money!
Good points maddog but you had a lot of “point #1, and #2’s”
Will ...as usual
Francesa is the Jay Leno of sports talk radio. Like Leno screwed Conan, Fraudcesa is screwing CMB. This is coming from me who actually have always liked Mike.
CMG were hemorrhaging the ratings that they inherited from Mike. They would have been fired in 3 months if Mike didn't come back. This actually helps them stay longer.
Paul Meier Conan's garbage
Ridiculous comparison. Conan was an established show with an established audience, which was why NBC pushed Leno out and had him go on the Tonight Show in 2004 and announce Conan was taking over in five years. FAN wanted Mike to stay.
@@e2go Not at all. I'm talking about Leno coming back after Conan took over. Not being established and wanting Mike to stay doesn't make it right. Plus,
NBC was ridiculous to announce five years in advance who is taking over.
Mike!!!!!!!!!
CMB was horrible
When Mike left I found a few podcasts I really got into like bill Simmons. I’m not sure if I will completely tune back into mikey full time like I used to.
Bill Simmons is horrible.
i enjoyed hearing new voices.
Took you're horn a little more Russo. Geez Mike doesn't need your help to get a job on Sirius radio or anywhere.
he should stay home
Tmks is better
