The Big Bus (or equivalent) is always a good way to discover the width of a city and the way a city is "organised". And you can spot the places you want to visit or find new ones. And let's face it : when you've just arrived, totally jetlagged but still have a whole day to fill, it's a good option. In any city, in my opinion.
I have to accept that not all tourists are willing to jump into taking the subway trip #1, minute #1... And this is a viable way to see a lot in a day.

I'd alway recommend taking one of the busses, no matter where you are IF you are moving to that city. It can be embarrassing, but you can get a really good idea where everything is. Did it when I moved to London, and it was a great help for jobs and housing locations.
I like taking the hoho (hop on/hop off) buses when I arrive in different cities - it gives a great overview of where you are, so that you are orientated and can then go back and explore specific areas that pique your interest.

Some would argue i went to such lengths to look like a tourist, that it was obvious i wasn't.
Even though I’m a native NYer, I’m definitely one of those NYers that has never fully seen most of the state before, so I would be a tourist in my own home state. In the city I’ve only ever seen Times Square, 9/11 memorial, Penn Station, and of course for the holidays…Radio City, but I’ve never seen or been to any of the other tourist attractions. I’ve never been upstate before, and even though I live on Long Island….I’ve only ever been to Long Beach, Jones Beach, and Nautical Mile in Freeport. So my goal before this year ends is still visit and see as much of NY as possible.
Do it! Dress like me for extra credit.
Don’t miss the Finger Lakes region especially Ithaca s and of course Niagara Falls. Rochester has some pretty cool cultural attractions.
@@georgiasmith7615 Agree 💯 about the Finger Lakes. I also loved Saratoga Springs, Dobbs Ferry, Sleepy Hollow, & FDR’s home/library.
Recently moved to Upstate NY - by any definition - and it's pretty laid back. Lots of outdoorsy stuff out here, not a lot of the bar/attraction scene. More 'make your own fun.'

Circle line looked nice, but for a sunset view of Manhattan, I really liked what we did on La Barca Cantina.
Diff perspective. But it’s tough to top the statue at sunset .

The waiter throwing straws at the lady was funny😂😂😂! I will maybe do the double decker bus maybe in November when I visit NYC again for the amazing views! I did the circle line cruise about a year ago and was well worth the 30 bucks

It's our last day here in New York heading back to derby UK Tomorrow evening, your tips and tricks have been an absolute god send. Clever idea, love the undercover "tourist disguise"! 😅👏 I had a friend that made me do ALL the tourist stuff once with one of the all-inclusive passes. I remember a party bus that was a fun experience and touring Radio City and also church catacombs were pretty cool. He also made me wait for Stardust and I ordered the cheapest "meal" which was $12 soup haha.
A tip for anyone wanting a fantastic view of the East River and all its bridges is to ride the NYC Ferry! Only $2.75/ride (may go up to $4 in Sept?) and free transfers as well. You can go all the way to Queens, and down to Bay Ridge (my neighborhood;) stopping at Pier 11/Wall St, DUMBO, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Red Hook (IKEA), & eventually adding Coney Island. There are lots of other routes as well, check it out! My favorite way around and much less touristy! 😉

John. Seriously. The Circle Line has a ton of sentimental value as my family did the CL several times when I was a kid. The last couple of visits, bringing 1st time NYC visitors with me, we’ve done the cruise. THE best way to see NYC and the tour guides are usually outstanding. The only downside is that sometimes the tides don’t cooperate and the boat cannot completely circle Manhattan Island. Thanks for fun video. I really enjoy all your videos 😃

As a native New Yorker that moved to Florida when I go back to visit family I make sure to do the touristy stuff I didn’t get to do as a kid. 😂 my family thinks it’s cringey but oh well 🤷♂️ I’m definitely going to do the night cruise you did. the Statue of Liberty 🗽 looks amazing at night

Great idea and great video! In 2017 we did the same cruise and did a bus tour of Brooklyn both in the cold of November. Only people braving outside on the ferry and we got the double decker bus to ourselves, tour guide was tremendous & he recommended Dekalb food hall to us. Would recommend to anyone else and it’s never a bad thing to do an hour or two on those buses before you get your bearings etc
8:00…Always loved the Circle Line when I was a kid in the late 70’s-early 80’s when I’d go on it on field trips…great commercial jingle that your video brought out of the depths of my memory! (“The ONLY WAY to SEE NEW YORK, Circle it on the Circle Line, Woo-ooh..”)

When we were last in NYC, we took a circle line day time cruise that took us all the way up the east river, across to the hudson and back down under the GWB, Saw some parts of Manhattan island i never thought we would.
It's a great boat. I think for the price it's tough to beat.

I remember being on this bus and thinking I would see you walking along the street! 😂😂 I do recommend it though, we enjoyed it, but wouldn’t do it next time we come. We were in New York over thanksgiving week and the stardust diner line was 1 hour and 30. After seeing your video it isn’t mine and my partners scene. We plan to come back again in the future and we will definitely do the cruise, that looked really good. Always a great video.

Great vibe of the Circle Line...NYC is awesome for a reason...
A couple of suggestions that are free or low cost: Staten Island ferry (great views of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty) and Roosevelt Island tram ( amazing views of Midtown skyline).
That's what my son did. He was on a cheapo visit to NYC, and looked at the prices to see some sights on the river. Said f it I'll just take the ferry, went across and caught the next one back. Saw everything he wanted to see for peanuts.

Good night. Loved this vlog. I'd recommend taking the NYC watertaxi from Astoria to Manhattan. The views of both Queens and Manhattan are spectacular. Cost = same as one subway ride.
Really great video Jon. As a local that has never done any of these things, seeing all of the tourists "oooh and aaah" over the Statue of Liberty made me a bit teary with pride. Hi Hi Jon. It Is Elaine, the recently retired teacher of Spanish in NJ. I have an interesting anecdote pertaining to that “camiseta fenomenal” that you were wearing in your video. Back maybe 15 years I was in the city with a group of students, walking from MOMA to a Spanish restaurant in the west thirties, which unfortunately is no longer in business. As we were making our way to the restaurant, we passed one of the NYC souvenir shops. We stopped so that they could make a purchase. When we got back to class the following Monday, to my surprise, all of my students who had participated in the trip came to class wearing that famous or to some infamous T-shirt. It may not seem that important, but the majority of students in that Spanish for Native Speakers III class had never before visited “la Gran Manzana and nor had visited a real museum. Great videos. Have been watching your content for a while and have just returned from a fantastic visit to New York city. As a first time visitor I did a lot of the things featured here; I was a bit overwhelmed by the size of the city and so stuck to the main tourist areas. There's a Circle Line tour that goes around the whole city and it is honestly fantastic, especially for how cheap it is. For out of town family/friends, these tours are a good beginner primer, since most people find NYC extremely overwhelming. Great video as always

It's nice that one can see the Statue of Liberty now. I remember back in the eighties, the smog was so thick you couldn't see it.

Great video. I was on a bus like that. It was Gray line. The Rangers had them during the playoffs but not this year. The rule was you had to sit especially in the Times Square area.. Ellen Stardust diner. I haven't been there in years but the service was good. Circle line I was on once with a social group it was good.. Seeing the Statue of Liberty an Ellis Island. The boat did go around the whole Manhattan. NYC now has Whale Watching boats one of them is docked in Sheepshead Bay .

I have to admit that I'm a sucker for Ellen's Stardust Diner. It just feels like a vacation activity. Plus, I like live performance and easily digested pop/Broadway/tin pan alley songs.
Bus tours can be a really effective way to start a trip to a new place, helping you get a grasp on what the big picture history, culture, and landscape is.
Sometimes if I go back to a place I've been before I schedule one of these really touristy days. I'm not too cool for fun when it's actually fun.

I did a similar thing...went back to the city and did touristy things about 12 years ago. I highly recommend the Revolutionary War Walking Tour, Carnegie Hall tour and Radio City Music Hall tour.

When i was younger between 18 to about 25 years old, I used to chat with the bus driver all the time! Especially when I sat in front of the bus!

I was on that Harbor lights Cruz two weekends ago, the guy on the loudspeaker giving the tour is actually really really good and funny! The beer is expensive, I just ended up buying a bucket and slamming him the whole time and you get an awesome view of the Statue of Liberty at night.
We went on a hop on hop off bus with an actual tour guide with a microphone... He had some stories,,, not sure how many where accurate but by god he was entertaining

Will be my third time visiting NYC this Christmas. I'm unapologetic about going for a 10 day pass as I'm going to be hitting the tourist stuff but the Big Bus I'll be doing because pick the right day when it's crisp and clear with nice weather and then top deck photography with a long lens. Get a different perspective of the city and street photography. I'll listen to the audio guide but I expect it's stuff I already know. Stardust is a big nope from me. Circle Line is a must as it's included with my NYC pass and the views for photography.
