    MAJOR CORRECTION!
the confession scene is indeed in fact in the game, I was wrong. Like majorly wrong. Ignore everything I said at the ending of the video! It wasn't in the "In water" ending but instead in a separate ending! this is why I got confused and assumed it was removed. THIS IS WRONG! im glad this is still in the game since it's one of the most emotional scenes in the game!
    I apologise for my ignorance!
I have trimmed out the part where I said the confession scene was removed. this isn't true at all and i don't want to spread misinformation lol, my bad!
TL;DR: I'm not saying the remake is bad. I loved a lot about it and thought Bloober improved almost every aspect about it. I just was not a fan of the overall presentation of the story. That's it...
I’m not trying to argue that Bloober should have copied the OG cutscenes exactly. That isn’t my point, i expected the game to be different with their cutscenes and I wasn’t expecting the voice acting to have the original feel since that would feel forced.
I state in the video that i respect Bloober for having a different approach and that I liked some of the cutscenes a lot. Especially the one in heavens night.
But this doesn’t mean I have to like the overall presentation of the story. Some of it was good, some not so much.
But at the end of the day this is just my opinion. Don’t let it sway you away from enjoying the game. I’m just happy to have more Silent Hill ❤

I completely agree with the vibe your talking about. I came out of watching the game feeling like most of the cutscenes weren't as impactful as the original. There was only a few where I felt they nailed it. It doesn't mean it's bad, it's just a little disappointing.

I want to mention a small detail in the new music in Eddie's first scene. It does bang, but it's when James denies Eddie's wish to escape the town with him. I like to interprete it as Eddie being offended by James and the start to his spiraling madness, because in the very next scene, in the cinema, he becomes insecure by James presence.

Regarding "Bloober answering too many questions":
I think answering and explaining too much is a big issue in western writing in general at the moment.
The plethora of "Villain origin story" movies that over-explain why these perfectly good villains actually just were misunderstood people.
Or take the videogame "Control" for instance, which builds a beautiful Lynchian world of perplexities only to quickly explain pretty much all its central mysteries away into "slightly strange science fiction".
Where Japanese media often answers too few questions, i feel that western media has become too comfortable with explaining just about everything.

To me in the remake, it feels like Eddie plays more the role of the victim on purpose to make you feel sorry for him, but in reality, he’s just manipulating you. He uses that victim role to justify his actions, like it’s okay to hurt people. It’s almost like he's in denial, convincing himself that everything he’s doing is fine.

I feel like the thing they got wrong with Maria in the remake was omitting that kind of evil seductiveness she has in the original. I remember reading somewhere that the developers intended for the player to be constantly switching between trusting her and feeling threatened by her while also being mesmerised, exactly like James himself would feel, and I think both the voice acting and her facial expressions (particularly her smile) in the original hit that absolutely perfectly. Remake she just comes across as obviously and unambiguously evil, all the nuance and subtlety is gone.

@@Kazaonytyeah, nowadays is either love or hate something, you can't love but prefer things from the OG. In regards to eddie tho, i liked how they switched things around to make him seem innocent at first and then showcase how he takes everything james says to heart (like when he puts the bucket down because james said he didnt lost his appetite), even holding grudges. It showcases well his insecurities and that he has more than just being a regular guy. I will say i prefer his og design as its more "normal" but his design on this game isn't bad, it brings out how much he probably suffers from the bullying and all that, but he also looks a bit more odd, which can make him seem more crazy. The prision scene i also prefer the OG but with the changes they presented, james also seemed to me as he wanted eddie to calm down since he was extremely volatile, eddie in this scene also is much less crazy in the sense of liking to do it, but more of delusional, a warped sense of right or wrong, you can see it because where eddie in the og expressed laughs or "light heartedness" he expresses anger and confusion. James in the prision is being careful but maybe sees eddie as susceptible given how he was presented and tried to calm him by reasoning with him. Its what i see about it tho, and my opinion. Im just really glad Silent Hill is back with an actual good game that do the OG justice. I may think some of the cutscenes doesnt have the same impact as the OG, but to someone who never played it, i can see this game being what the OG was for the people that played it for the first time.

@@betlergaen5757 I much prefer the OG Eddie. I’ve made a video breaking down why I think he’s the most terrifying character in the franchise. @@Kazaonytyeah i can see it and actually prefer him on the OG as well (your video about him is great btw), but even if i do prefer him i think they did a good job with him. What i like in the remake tho is how they compromised with the voice acting being more professional but still bringing the weirdness of the dialogue. Every character takes their time to speak, james shows a LOT through his face, you can see him thinking and formulating an answer, and you can see how conflicted he is even if he does seem calm. I think they did maintain the weirdness of the characters, but not in the same way, i still love the vibe of the OG more tho, it has more impact overall for me but the remake isn't too far behind, its like 8/10 compared to 10/10, less impactful, but still good.
Some of the things on the remake are there because they were confirmed too, like mary being in the backseat. If im not mistaken, it was confirmed via the book and Ito too (i think it was him) so they bringing it on the remake is because of this i think (like in Dead Space remake they brought lore from 2 as well) i don't think it needed to be done but i understand why they did it

  • @JooganJaeger

To me the cinematic direction is the overall problem. It feels too modernized and westernized, like an albeit good Hollywood remake of a lower budget horror film. The story is the same, the beats are the same, it's technically well made and competent, but the subtlety and soft psychological manipulation by the direction is gone. The visionary cinematography is gone. The grit and dirtiness is gone. The character feels absent. The voice acting isn't bad, it's just directed as if it's a straight forward horror movie. There's no dreaminess, no otherworldliness to the line delivery, there's so much more telling and not enough showing. So much went into visually impressive facial animations but it's not put to any thematic use. The original games had much more attention to body language and use of animation to convey the characters' mental instability whereas in the remake it's just outright told through dialogue. James in the original was clearly "off" from the beginning, in the remake they seemed to go out of their way to present him as an average, likeable guy, I'm assuming so the ending comes as more of a surprise to new players but it makes that revelation fall kind of flat thematically.
If other people like it that's just fine but to me there's really nothing this game does to set itself apart technically from any other modern horror game and the story isn't presented as well as it was 20 years ago.

The Original didn’t need to use threatening enemies to create its horror.
The original’s horror was much more long lasting and drawn out. It got it’s horror from the atmosphere the game created with the fog shrouded town and the background music creating a foreboding feeling paired with the fixed camera angle limiting your ability to see what was in front of you.
At points the remake floods you with enemies to the point that you are annoyed instead of being scared, this was never the case for the original as enemies were placed much more sparsely around the map.

Angela sounds like she took one too many Benadryl before going to SH. James just sound sad and tired. Not numb, and slightly unhinged like in the OG. Maria just feels flat at all times. Imo, you should have waited longer before making this. I understand "fans" being upset by how everyone is negative nowadays but what I have observed is that many people seemed to have reacted to this phenomenon by becoming hyper-defensive and desperately trying to shirk off any and all criticism for their favourite game. I think people just need to let the honeymoon phase pass because anyone with a nuanced take who ends their review by saying "I don't like this game" or "I LOVE this game" is crapped on by all sides.
That said, I agree with your overall take. I don't think this remake replaces the original. Nowhere close to it. The original game still remains the "definitive" experience to experience what Team Silent wanted to offer to the player with Silent Hill 2.
What people don't seem to understand is that SH2 was, in many ways, a "lightning in the bottle" type of game. Made by the right people, with the right mindset, at the right time. The way they leveraged the limited technology they had at the time to create SH2 is an art in and of itself. The more I think about the original, the more I'm impressed by it. Yes, it feels "inferior" in many aspects to the remake, but even those things that it doesn't do well contributed to the overall experience.
I mean, just look at the Maria cutscene in the labyrinth prison room:
The entire scene is enveloped in this *dingy lighting that casts deep shadows across the environment*. The light source is unidentifiable and provides minimal illumination, and it creates this high contrast between the characters and their surroundings. You also get that iconic "Chiaroscuro effect", where James and Maria's faces are partially covered with shadows, slightly. The lights also briefly flicker in intensity when Maria asks "James is something wrong?" which is also a great touch.
It all feels so meticulous, how the lighting draws your attention to specific details, such as Maria’s face, the bars of the prison cell, her features; it makes her look alluring but also a bit ghostly.
Then there's the beautiful *colour palette*. It's muted and desaturated, mostly dominated by grey, blue and brown; almost monochromatic. It removes any vibrance and warmth in the scene and instead enhances the bleak/coldness. Very fitting how that reflects the lifelessness of the cell and the emptiness inside James.
Speaking of which, the walls are also interesting. They reflect light in an unnatural way, despite how low-key the lighting is, which adds to that sense of unreal-ness. Think about it - the way the prison walls appear in the original CG cutscene's lighting is totally unrealistic, unless the entire room is well-lit and illuminated but it doesn't feel that way at all. This is something modern tech can't achieve by itself, you would have to manually mess with all the parameters, altering each one to create this effect.
Then there's the contrast between the surrounding and Maria's outfit and makeup. Her clothing especially stands out against the drab background (symbolism for James desire most likely). It draws your eyes to her. James on the other hand, while I won't say he "disappears" into the background, he blends in far more than she does.
Examples like this are what create that fugue-like, dreamy, unnatural, lynchian vibe and atmosphere of the original. I could also give other examples but I've written too much so I'll wrap up my thoughts.
The remake improves on so many aspects of the original. Everything is more high budget, the visuals, the audio, the controls and overall gameplay... almost everything but that the thing that makes Silent Hill 2 what it is - that atmosphere. I think the remake does an excellent job in "immersing" you in the world and the fantastic audio design once again, keeps you on your toes. And the boss fights are so much better, that's not even a question. But the vibe that made Silent Hill so distinct, that ultimately separated it from Resident Evil and helped it carve out its own niche, is just not there. And unfortunately, that is what this remake needed the most.
And like I said the original game was a "lightning in a bottle" scenario. Regardless what Team Silent "intended", they had to work within the confines of their limited budget and tech to convey their ideas. They needed to think outside the box to accomplish their vision - like in the Maria cutscene I described above. Hell, even the hybrid fixed/following camera system that the original had, despite its flaws and obvious hinderance to the gameplay, created this unique cinematography that made it so special and unique.
And before anyone says I'm nostalgic for the original games, know that I played the Silent Hill games for the first time in 2021. So believe me when I say I don't have rose-tinted glasses because I went in blind and the thing that attracted to the games was the incredible score by Yamaoka.
Overall, I think this remake is a great AAA game that has a lot going for it and I did enjoy the time I spent with it. But I just don't think it replaces the original that so many people pledge it does.

The original felt like a young adult bully victim who snapped and gave in to the darkness he saw as redemption, mimicking Jame's self righteousness.

My two cents: The remake does alot of great things, but the original just had a better vibe. Thats not to say that the remake doesn't do a good job, its just that the original was a work of art. The remake is just an expansion of the same story with new areas, and really engaging gameplay. I don't like what they did to the song that plays in heaven's night. The original version was dream like, but the remake version adds too much "funk" to it. It lost the dream like vibe.
Overall I'm really enjoying the remake, it's a surprisingly nice recreation of the original. It's a different game that respects the original, yet gives totally new layouts and areas, with expanded lore. I was scared they were going to just copy and paste the same environment into UE5. I have the same concern with Snake Eater. Remakes shouldn't be just the same game with a new coat of paint.

Agree so much with Eddie. And another point I’d like to add, I think they went too far with Eddie’s appearance and weight in the remake for no good reason that it completely removed the normality of his character in the OG. Now he just looks like a completely crazy guy because of how obese and volatile he is that it removes a lot of the meaning his character had.
I think Eddie being just a regular chubby guy who snapped due to being around cruel bullies seemed, to me at least, to emphasize how normal people all have their issues and breaking points, and can all result in them doing horrible things because that’s just how life is, But they just HAD to make him look crazy and morbidly obese from the get go in the remake. 🤦‍♀️

And don;t sell me it because of the ice creams. As a psycho, he surely is, he licks them from his hand, because they are already melted. They've botched this on so many levels. Most of the inspiration take took is from the movies. How many times you can hear sirens in SH 2, and how often you hear them in reimagining? Why there's sunny weather outside hospital, when there was fog and steel sky just before entering it? Why everything is wet? Why reality, foggy and heallish Silent Hill parts appear at the same time? Why you can hear rain outside hellish hospital? After all that version of SIlent Hill lies inbetween realities, in some void. It's a separate plane on its own. There was no one in their team who understand this game. Hence the feel is not there. Everything is mixed and makes a complete mess for Silent Hill connoisseur.

There could be multiple fictitious people/bullies and that particular one may or may not even be the same body from his perspective, and while it still looks like James the attire is different relative to all other appearences still; and for all we know the latest bully may simply not have taken whatever offscreen warnings they may or may not have recieved.
And he means being followed relatively. The kill of whatever or whoever it was (at least within the in the town itself) is confirmed, but outside of the town bar shooting someone in the knee and or a dog we don't really know. That and according to Itoh, Eddie has only killed a dog.

26:20 - that confession scene IS in the remake!! Mary is even asking James "if that's true then why are you sad now...?"
The comical voices of the original SH2 are in fact making me so much more detached from the game taking place in Silent Hill. Remake voices make me (personally) feel like such dialogues could actually happen in real life. You calling James unhinged is me seeing James' voice actor as somebody who doesn't reflect real-life dialogues. He is showing more of the 'american' lines (such us SH4's "are you okay?")
The fact that the camera is hinting that Mary's body was in the backseat of the car added so much more to the horror when I played it. It gave me the Silent Hill 4 vibe, of disovering Walter Sullivan body inside of your own apartment. That's something that is far better when shown! rather than left to some speculations.
You also called Maria's transformation in the prison cell "very creepy". I don't see it that way. I see it as an beginner actor being given a stage (at a job interview), and being given a task to be "nice and cosy" and then "to act like a villain". There was something "cheap" about it from my perspective. It was clear to me that Maria isn't self aware of how suspicious she is being to James in that scene. Remake made Maria much less like a cartoonish villain and more like an actual woman trapped behind the bars. Now perhaps there could be some sort of a "tick" or "twitch" or something with the "uneven blinking", something with the head movement, that could have been added to that scene in the original game that could look creepy. Maybe such an idea could have been made in the remake to extend that concept of a transformation. But as for now Remake simply makes it more realistic and looks better (to me). It removed that blatant villain vibe. Sure, perhaps the remake could keep the same light of the bulb, but then how often do you see a woman in real life sitting in such an unnatural ominous spot. "I sat here just to not show you my eyes, and I will stay here to give you the trouble vibe"

Also, I do not see it as a woman trapped behind bars. And she’s not exactly a villain either. James is the one trapped, the whole prison cell scene was projected from James’s subconscious. Maria is tormenting as it was her purpose in the first place.

I kinda see it as early american comedies with a laughing track, trying to hint me that something is funny. And I'm not gonna lie, I don't think it's a good thing. The absence of music to me is working to the game's advantage in some scenes (again, only in some scenes) because it makes you judge the situtation for what it really is, based on what you see. If you want to make a remake, you need to have some different idea on how things should look like. The absence of music and absence of suggestion is perhaps why many people consider the 2019's Joker as a far better representation than Joker from the previous movies where he is unnaturally not interrupted, unnaturally given a lot of space for an unnaturally perfect speech each time. Going to have to play the game a 3rd/4th time before i really know what i think of the differences for the remake, but for now, i do like the the remake, even though there are some minor thing that i prefer the original. Combat in the remake honestly i prefer as at least the enemies put a effort to put me in a bind, somebody please tell me i'm not the only one that was caught off guard of Eddie's boss fight being a bit of a spike. Some voice acting i don't mind the differences but again, will jave to replay and really pay attention to see how if feel about that. That said, one moment that i do have a small nit to pick on, the pyramid introduction, not the part of him behind the bars, but right after. Don't know why, but i prefer the original both how James reacted with shooting pyramid head and how PH was acting. I like the original more as i like that the idea PH did notice James but couldn't see through the cabinet to well hence why he pull his helmet a bit to get a better look, and whatever James saw made him panic fire at him and that actually hurt ph to run off. Remake wasn't bad, it does show ph being a terrifying force that can be shot down, but i like the original version more.

For example, I’ve experienced bugs in my playthrough where I couldn’t progress without reloading. My critique would be “the game could be more polished”. Or “Angela’s voice actress sounds forced”. @@danielgregori7019 that’s fair enough. I like both. The remake has better gameplay, level design and puzzles. But I personally thought the story was told better in the original and had a better atmosphere. Which is obviously quite important for a silent hill game.

He quite literally said multiple times through out the video that he thought the game was great and that Blooper improved on nearly every aspect of the game compared to the original. He also said that some of the mechanics from the first game were really bad, i.e the combat, which is something they really improved. Yeah really sounds like he just wanted a copy of the remake. You would've understood this if you simply watched the video. His only complaint was that some of the cutscenes/character felt watered down. Something a remake should be improving. Which I think most people would fairly agree on 😃

    • @abinas7077
      @abinas7077 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

First of all, ever since the 2002 RE1 remake, gamers have come to expect a specific level of quality and RESPECT to the original. And since Bloopoopers literally shot down the ex-Team Silent devs' suggestion of making a brand NEW story, a whole new game, just to get to make a "faithful recreation" of THE SH2, all these changes, many of them being outright downgrades + appealing to the casual, oversensitive "modern audiences", do come across plain insulting.
Second, you marketers always pull your "play the OG!" card. But let me ask you this: HOW can we play the original? If you'd know anything about SH and how Konami has mistreated the IP the past 20 years now, you'd know that you're essentially encouraging people to do piracy. Which is totally fine, but at least say it out loud!

I have to disagree with you about new Eddie vs. old Eddie.. I think the remake improved upon his character and cutscenes. The old version made Eddie seem pathetic, untrustworthy, and laughable. Then, he turns into a crazed murderer before the boss battle. There was hardly any subtlety.. So when James kills him, it feels completely justified. Eddie was just messed up and evil, so killing him creates no conflict in the player's mind.
Bloober decided to take a slower, more deliberate approach to Eddie's character this time that I think works exceptionally well. His derangement creeps up on you and develops organically, leaving players with a steadily evolving concept of Eddie as a potential threat. When we first meet him, the new Eddie seems like more of a victim.. he seems troubled, traumatized, and more human. He seems harmless and almost pathetic. There's no perceivable threat, and you instantly feel bad for him. The next time you meet him in the theatre, his vibe has changed, creating that uneasy tension that you described in the first original Eddie's cutscene... There's something.. off, even though we have established previously that he is harmless and meek.. now we are not so sure. By the time it is revealed that Eddie now poses an immediate threat to James, we still feel sorry for Eddie, which makes what must happen next feel so conflicting. Eddie has snapped, yet his actions almost seem more justified.. like the world pushed him to this point. The player understands that Eddie's character was HUMAN, with dimension, pain, and trauma who made horrible mistakes (just like James). Now when James is forced to defend himself and kill Eddie, it feels more tragic and poignant.. Like his death could have been prevented. Eddie just needed help.

This game, Silent Evil is not better than the original. You brought up so many points on why the original is better the combat for one is utter ridiculous and it takes away the immersion. This alone should be enough since much of the game is freakin fighting which is a moot point and it is a huge deal that the dodge mechanic is present because if it wasn't Blubber studios would of toned it down on the damn fighting instead of trying to encourage the player to freakin fight.
Why do you guys want to remake one of the best remasters ever? That being Resident Evil 1 remaster? It's been remade from the original Resident Evil 1 on the PSX into the Resident Evil 1 remaster we know today which is one of the few that surpasses that of the original and both were done under the creator Shin Mikami. You want to RUIN Resident Evil 1 to be utter crap and an olver the shoulder bs like Resident Evil 2 remake which completely ruined side B on both characters because the game was a cash grab only and not actually made out of love and passion but tons of 1d!ots bought it and did not give a damn how the original was far superior to it. I sincerely hope Crapcom does not listen to any of you weirdos and only provide higher texture graphics for Resident Evil 1 remaster.
