  • Dialing in a kick that cuts through the mix with clarity, punch and presence without getting crazy and overwhelming the rest of your mix is tough-- but thanks to Robin Leijon, here's how to pull it off! // Want more? Join NAIL THE MIX ► goo.gl/Pkrjcg
    NAIL THE MIX is an online mixing school created by Joey Sturgis, Joel Wanasek and Eyal Levi - the guys who produced bands like TDWP, Chelsea Grin, Blessthefall, Machine Head, Monuments, Miss May I, The Black Dahlia Murder, Reflections, Born Of Osiris, Asking Alexandria and dozens more of this generation's best metal bands.
    Every month, NAIL THE MIX members get exclusive access to the REAL MULTI-TRACK SESSIONS from a REAL ALBUM, and a 6-8 hour live streaming class from the producer who mixed it. These aren't bogus covers played by some nobody off of TH-cam, these are the actual sessions by bands like Gojira, Chelsea Grin, Periphery, Papa Roach, Machine Head, Neck Deep and State Champs - and NTM is the only place in the world you'll get access to them!

    Great tone man! Do you use the default avatar preset as a starting point?, i mean, with default master and mixer volumes? For some reason, the volume of my Kick drum in and kick drum out is louder than yours. Maybe MIDI velocity? Last question, where can i find your kick and snare samples? THANKS!

    • @BeforeHumans
      @BeforeHumans 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I noticed that your non processing snare and kick samples are processed in your drum bus and different sendings to fx and parallel comp so i don´t know how these samples sound without processing.

      Am I the only person that thinks 90% of snares I hear in modern metal are overprocessed with too much reverb? It seems like ALL of them sound like that now.

    Can you explain the multi band a bit better, 1/2 second attack? Does it only work in the double kick passages?

    • @robinleijon
      @robinleijon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it's set to mostly work on the double kick parts to mainly focus on the low end build up happening!

    thanks for great tutorials Robin! just one question - when you start mixing the invidual tracks (kick in, kick out, snare, ...) do you have set up paralell comp tracks and processing on busses? because even when you show us how they sound unprocessed, they are still going throung processed paralell comp tracks and busses, right?

    • @robinleijon
      @robinleijon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey dude! Thank you.
      Yes that is true, I always set up bus processing/paralell compressions before and then tweak them during the mixstage.
      This song was mixed before doing this series, so there's things I didn't think off but will be improved with the next series that I think will be really liked!
      Thanks for watchin'!

    Some Reaper on NTM finally !!! Great Video ! And Robin , maybe you could make some videos about pre production , editing in Reaper ? We all have the NTM to learn how to mix , but I always struggle with bad sources during the recording / editing stage . So you know , editing guitars , tuning bass with melodyne , those kind of things...

    I do not know if you are still active on this channel or not. I was looking on your page and couldn't find, but are there any video's you have explaining why you put things in the folders/sub groups you do in Reaper?
    I see people do it but I don't understand why, or when you should or shouldn't do it.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    WHY THE SAMPLES :c
    We need live drums.

  • @iand3865
    @iand3865 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why is everything stereo tracks with no visible editing? Are these already bounced down and processed prior to to tutorial? Is there any benefit in having your tracks stereo vs mono if you're mixing in stereo? Is there any benefit in a bounced track? Does this question make sense?

    • @robinleijon
      @robinleijon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ian!
      These were tracks I was provided with from my Client, I didn't bounce these or anything besides adding the extra ''The Lion'' sample! And in Reaper atleast it doesn't matter if the signal is Mono/Stereo. It will still sound the same!
      I hope that answeared your question! :D

      Problem is that every mic'd kick will sound different and act different to your editing. This example here is something everyone with the sample can reproduce.

      David Velez Samples are are integral part of making competitive and modern metal mixes. Nothing abnormal about it.

    • @Charlyfromthenuclearcity
      @Charlyfromthenuclearcity 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He's just using samples, not blending them with a real kick drum.
      It's pretty rare nowadays that som serious rock or metal production use only samples.

    • @Charlyfromthenuclearcity
      @Charlyfromthenuclearcity 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but you'll agree it's pretty far from EQing and compressing a real kick drum recorded in a real drumkit, in a real room, with bleed, and the inconsistencies of a drummer.
