Just want to say, your videos have helped me more than I could ever imagine. I love the way you explain things. I’m a person that’s very particular on how I receive information and you always hit the nail on the head so to speak. Thank you for what you do and for all the amazing videos. ✌🏽❤️
incredible video, guided me through the entire process on my first try and made me learn so much in such a short time. would be great if you could link the videos you mention about snare/OH/toms processing in the description
Good god samples are like cheating. Even with a killer recording you can just do MORE with them. That snare drastically changed when you added the sample.
Anything is valid if it serves your vision for the song, if a snare improves when activating the trigger and achieves the sound you’re looking for, why avoid using it ?
Awesomeness you got a very well recorded drum kit plus you did an amazing jobi love how you didnt just replaced the kit but you used samples to enhance the kit good job bud
Thanks mate! Yes I always try to enhance the real drums! I actually can’t remember the last time I just completely replaced a drum 🤔 thanks for watching man!
Hello guys, speaking of Mixbuss in the box, I would like to share my excitement with you about the discovery of FirComp 2... never heard such a "respectful" SSL bus comp emulation that also packs so much punch! After the discovery, I sold my SSL The Bus+...
@@spinlightstudios well, I definitely prefer the simplicity and the sound of the SSL G-comp which to my hear is not that far from FirComp 2. I’ve extensively tried each and every SSL bus comp emulation and to my taste the FirComp 2 is the absolute winner.
Amazing video, thanks for this!! I noticed slate trigger works well on the double kick hits without you tinkering with the settings. I always seem to have issues with double hits etc. any tips on this? Thanks from a new subscriber!
Thanks man! It’s mostly about getting the the threshold (detail), sensitivity and retrigger dialed in right and then it works pretty flawlessly (if the drums your triggering off of are played consistently)
I don’t currently. Personally I turn the V gain all the way down. Usually I just end up with a bunch of noise/hiss by having it on - similar to waves “analog” button
Hiya... loving these show n tell videos... loving em! Quick question: you seem to have an instance of VCC channel on by default every time you load the Slate virtual mix rack... is that for some purpose? isn't that just randomly adding that 'sound' to the various individual tracks? is this a good thing? thanks again!
Hey thanks man! I have VCC set to load up on default just because I like the sound it adds when stacked across a lot of tracks. It’s pretty subtle on individual tracks, but make a difference across a full mix. I don’t think it hurts to have it on some tracks and not everything. It’s just adding a bit of flavour!
@@spinlightstudios I see! So not VCC 'groups', just the default flavour. As in, not like it's linked to the VCC bus version in the main bus? thanks for the reply!
Question 1: did you track the drums yourself? Cause the raw tracks sound great - clean, punchy, pretty much the golden standard of today. If yes, more insight into the recording process would be very welcome (mic choices, mic placement, processing on the way in, muffling, tuning, head choices etc.) Question 2: How much editing was required? Because again, the tracks sound like what I would aspire to - professional yet natural. It sounds like the drummer is VERY GOOD, which you can tell from other things besides timing - consistency, dynamics, instrument choices, pocket etc. Great results anyway, subbed!
Hey Casey, thanks for the comment! I played drums on this track - it was a session job :) check out my video on recording pro drums in a home studio - I run through my entire choice and placement. After I’m done tracking I use flextime to make it all super tight - I also have a video on this part of the process too! Thanks mate
@@spinlightstudios oh I didn't realize you played it (after having found your channel from a Maroon 5 short and thinking jeez that sounds good, my bad haha) killer job, I would love to record more drummers like you :D Thanks dude, will check them vids out!
Thanks mate! I just updated the description of this video - go check out black salt audio’s “Silencer” plugin. It’s a dedicated drum gate/debleeder. Make sure you use my link above as it supports my channel when you do :) I also have a demo of how it works if you look back through some of my recent videos you’ll find it.
I think it’s $49 usd at the moment - fair bit cheaper than ProMB and does essentially the same thing. I’ve been using silencer a lot since it came out :)
Hi Willy, with Slate subscription you get everything except the virtual microphones. You also get a large range of SSL plugins too. Recommend you visit Slate digital site and get all the details!

For whatever reason I have never thought about using a transient designer on toms... I will try that asap.

@@spinlightstudios Do you have a video explaining guitar mix?
Awesome drums 👍🏼could you tell which snare sample you have used ? Thx 🙏🏻
Thanks man, I think it was a snare from the CLA expansion pack for Trigger 2
Do you have a given set level for kicks, snare, Oheads, Toms, hats and Rooms when mixing your drums???
Not really, it’s usually just a to taste kind of thing.
great channel and great content!!
Cheers legend!
Great content here...your channel is real gold!!! May I ask you which snare sample have you used here?
Thanks Mate! Think this one was maybe one from the Steven slate CLA expansion or maybe Getgood Drums. Can’t remember exactly sorry
Do you have a video on the V Gain and THD usage on the SSL?
I don’t currently. Personally I turn the V gain all the way down. Usually I just end up with a bunch of noise/hiss by having it on - similar to waves “analog” button
reality theres no good drum mixing without snare samples . metallica blacak album snare was also blend of replace snare.
Nice stuff dude!

Ill subscribe to a fellow Aussie! Great info man 🤘

Thanks for this tutorial but I still can't find a good level for kick drum. It's either too loud or too quiet.
It’s always a tricky balance between EQ compression and levels - and personal taste for getting it to sit in the mix just how you imagine it.

Check the link in the description to black salt audio’s “silencer” plugin. It’s pretty good at killing cymbal bleed in close mics!
