Enjoy this new episode of Michael working on his vocal training. This is the final act of three.
Michael visits long time friend Seth Riggs and works on his vocal technique.
Seth has created the vocal technique "Speech Level Singing" and has worked with performers such as Prince, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Madonna and Barbra Streisand.
Riggs started singing when he was about 7 years old, joining his neighborhood choir. He has been a vocal coach since 1949, serving in the Navy as a gunner.
He also conducts workshops and masterclasses around the world together with his wife, Margareta Svensson Riggs. In 2019, Margareta Svensson Riggs is one of the 50 international expert judges on the new global talent competition series The World's Best from reality TV heavyweights Mark Burnett and is the first Swede to be featured as a judge on an American reality talent show.

@brennendehexe7934 I went to Lisbon Portugal for 45 days and worked with a great vocal gal three times a week. Breath work was number one. She recognized a bad habit from day one, " just open, it's natural. Good luck.

Thank you so much Michael for sharing this vocal lesson with us. Seth rarely talks about breathing or support so I am glad to finally know his thoughts on the subject. Respectfully, I must beg to differ on these 2 subjects. What is shown here is belly breathing and abdominal kicks, both of which are not the most efficient for supporting the upper register. The kicks are especially dangerous due to the sudden increase in sub-glottal pressure. I know Seth is a big guru in CA but there is another way which is much easier. The secret of breathing is not in the belly but in the back, which is why the Bel Canto singers specialized in "back breathing" not belly breathing. Simply put, the muscle fibers of the front of the diaphragm are about 1/4 the length of the back fibers which are further helped/extended down by ligaments, connecting the diaphragm with L1, L2 and L3 (below the waist). A lot of people know the power of the voice is in the back but they don't know how it works. There's a simple way to activate these powerful muscles and ligaments but that is half the battle. What to do next is also important and kicking in the belly is not it. You then lift the weight of the rib cage off the lungs which allows for total control of the sub-glottal pressure. For Michael Bolton to say after a very successful career, spanning decades, that it seems ‘counter intuitive’ to pull the belly inwards while singing, is something we must not ignore. This method of breath support is pretty much the opposite of how the legends (Pavarotti, Caruso, Mario Del Monaco etc.) did it, which was appoggio, the leaning of the breath against the diaphragm, which causes the belly to relax outwards.

There are so many things to think about while you are singing that you can get completely screwed up. The breathing, the mouth and tongue position, your stature, it’s absolutely insane.
It's such a sport! It's crazy. Once I started learning to sing it got under my skin and has become an obsession to keep trying and trying to perfect.
Just started singing lessons didn’t realise I was opening a can of worms!!
With time it all becomes automatic, the body learns how to react properly. It's like magic 💖

Michael I always LOVE hearing you sing Nessun Dorma and this is amazing seeing and hearing you doing these vocal exercises!! This was fascinating to watch...the correct breathing, posture, etc required!! I am going to watch this again shortly! This breathing technique is literally a 101. I found it hard to believe Michael Bolton, THE Michael Bolton just discovered it in this video or has any struggle with it. His voice is truly magical.
difficult to learn this technique without a teacher because its possible to be firming up the stomach but still be pushing from the throat .the sound produced is the virtually the same .

It's a fantastic vid Michael to see all the hard work behind the scene to keep your amazing voice, the most beautiful and moving we've ever heard. This shows you’re never too old to improve yourself. Michael is 66 years old in this video. He’s one of the aging vocalists who have developed vocal tiredness. As you get older, your range would deplete a bit and your voice gets tired more often when you perform 1.5 to 2 hour concerts. That makes you have to drop a key signature down a notch or two to make it through a lengthy concert. It sucks getting old but you can’t stop the clock. Live life to the fullest
