I used both for this video. I'll probably be switching to Amplitube because I'm becoming more familiar with it. Both are great, but Line 6 has stopped development for PodFarm as far as I know so it's going to become obsolete.

Alisha Hutton It's preferred if you don't want to buy thicker gauge strings and file your nut to fit thicker gauges.

and it's not required because the bassist of OM&M uses 4 string basses (particularly, a regular Fender Jazz Bass)
He uses PRS Grainger basses, and SE Kestrel basses but your point about not needing a 5 is valid.
