Oh the irony of catching this video at 3am with a mild bit of insomnia.
Regarding the "Most of my friends would be asleep, I would be alone" point, that's far less of a problem nowadays than it's ever been in history thanks to the internet. With social media like Facebook and online communities like Discord, it's easier than ever to make friends and chat with people around the world. I regularly meet up for chats and multiplayer gaming sessions with friends from Australia, Maine, and England (or we try; it's tricky coordinating folks halfway around the world). So if you're determined to not be bored and to maintain social contact with this magic sleep-free pill, this is the best time ever to do it.

I sleep easily 10 hours when I don't have to get up for something and I'm still not fully refreshed. The pill would be worth it just for the fact that sleep now does its job, let alone the ~50% bonus time. And this isn't like living to 120years old instead of 80... this is 50% more time AT EACH YEAR OF AGE.

Weekend screwed already. In addition, work wouldn't feel as much of a lifewaster as it is now. Currently I lose about 10 hours to work, then I have maybe 2 hours to myself in which I'm already tired, and then I go to sleep. I would definitely start all over again at €0 just to experience basically a minivacation after every workday.

The older you get, the less valuable the lack of sleeping becomes.
At 25 as an American my life expectancy roughly about 51 more years.
You sleep roughly 1/3rd of your life, so around 17 years would effectively be added onto my lifespan- or more than half of the life I’ve lived so far would be effectively added.
I also struggle with energy and getting enough sleep, so I’d be happier that whole time.
I would absolutely take the blow of a few hundred bucks, some Knick knacks, and home goods to be able to only need 1 hour of sleep.
My dad, on the other hand, is about to be 60. By the same metrics he’d only add a little over 5 years effectively and lose thousands upon thousands of dollars, maybe his house, and a lifetime’s worth of collections and memorabilia.
It wouldn’t really be worth it.

A similar interesting question I think would be, how much would you give to be able to remember every moment of your dreams as though you were awake. As in you wake up after 8 hours of sleep, and you remember the last 8 hours of dreams in just as much detail as if it were real life.
In that way you are essentially extending your perceived life in the same way, except you can't necessarily do anything useful with your extra time. I would allow that you can induce lucid dreams if you practice it, you can exit a dream any time if you are the kind of person prone to nightmares, and you can tell dreams and reality apart - at least, once you're awake.
It has always been a childhood dream of mine (no pun intended) to be able to record and view back my dreams or just to be able to remember them in more detail as I am fascinated by dreams and often find myself in the morning drifting back off to sleep to continue my half finished dreams. I think I would give a lot to have this ability, possibly even half of my possessions like the original question.
While you can't exactly study new information or do useful acts in your dreams it certainly would enrich my experience of life if every night you had a vivid 8 hour experience that feels like real life.

    • @deborahdanhauer8525

I generally agree that this would be a good deal. I don't get enough sleep as it is, so paying half of what I own to get more time per day, to stay fully rested, and probably live longer because of the health benefits of getting the proper amounts of sleep... Excellent deal.
That said, I think the biggest drawback here is that you are the only one that gets this deal. You become a person that is awake for 23 hours a day in a world where everyone else is awake ~16 hours a day. In my local area most places shut down around 10pm and don't start really ramping up until 6am at the earliest, there's a general expectation of quiet hours in my complex, and all of my normal friends are asleep... so that extra 7 hours is subpar.
That's perfect if you have things you can do that either require no one else (writing, reading, single-player games, binging on youtube / favorite streaming platform, personal crafts, whatever other hobbies...), or ones that work well across timezones (i.e. multiplayer games that has players that would still be on for your extended hours), or were already self sufficient.
But every time you have to interface with the rest of the world you'll have to remember what the schedule for the rest of the waking population is like.

As for half of what I own, depending on when you make this decision and how much I own in total at that time, it is totally possible to reclaim those things or money. things you've made can be remade and you've now got the time. 7 hours is a lot of time to spend on many things, and can be worthwhile using.

But if I got a second job with my free time for a year or so, I could easily make back what I lost and more.
Then once I've recovered from the original lose, I'd probably come out ahead.

I think to the point of losing half of what you own should be approached from the point of view of losing half of all of your perceived value.
Or in more simple terms, you'd have to carefully and honestly categorize all of your belongings into various 'boxes' representing varying amounts of value.
Money, which may not have much value to you, would go into the lower end of the categories, while deeply personal items that cannot be replaced would go into the higher end.
You'd then have to lose half of the total of everything.
The difficult part of it is how top-loaded the categories would be, with just the first box containing maybe 50% of all the value, due to it containing all the deeply personal and emotional possessions.
So therein lies the immeasurable difficulty of the choice; would you be willing to give up half of each box? Perhaps you'd give up the entire first box, to keep all the rest of your belongings? Or give up everything else, just to keep the belongings that are most dear to you?

I would give away every single thing with monetary value that I currently have now to be refreshed after an hour of sleep. That super power would allow me to gain it all back so quickly, I wouldn't care...and the increase in quality of life would more than make up for any temporary discomfort.

The sense of time passing more rapidly, increases with age. It's frightening, but true. Things you think of as being very recent can, and do, turn out to be years, often decades, old. This is especially true of music and movies. I'm 60, and it is starting to worry me. Apparently it is real, and not just a mental aberration. That's not much comfort, either.

Like five years ago, maybe more, something happened to me and I have no idea what it was but I just stopped feeling sleepy or tired.
I spent my time watching tv and movies and playing games and chatting with friends online but typically I would feel tired and I would go to bed and sleep.
But one night i just didn't feel sleepy or tired. I felt no need for sleep or rest. So i stayed up all night. I told my friends I would go to bed when I felt tired... except i never felt tired. Drowsiness never came.
I ended up staying awake for four days and nights without feeling tired or sleepy or suffering from ill effects. It was like i just stopped needing to sleep.
It wasn't an unpleasant experience, it wasn't bad, it was just a thing that happened to me. But these days i have to enjoy sleep to a great amount and the idea of giving up sleep and having nothing bad happen as a result is a very unappealing concept.

I have thought about it a lot. Only disadvantage I see is if you have a partner who still needs normal sleep and is accustomed to sleeping with their partner. Then you'd beed to fall asleep with them and then get up and leave them or find a way to spend your time in bed, while they sleep, without disturbing them. (At least for a set amount of compromised days in the week.) But with the differing sleep schedules in my past relationships, that didn't work too well, either. (And most of the time I don't have a partner anyway. 😅)
Someone asked me, if I didn't enjoy sleeping. Yeah no. I really don't. I am unconscious during that time. In bed before sleeping I only feel dread because I don't have enough time left for a restful sleep and will feel awful again the next day. I only like the feeling of not having to get up on a free day. And I only crave sleep, because I am so sleepy from not having slept enough and tired from my day consising mostly of work, chores, other obligations and sleep with little time for recreation.
But wow, half of what I own is a lot. But I'd still have enough, I'd had several times the amount of time to spend recreationally and time to work more (getting more skilled and able to raise my pay!) and work would also go better and be less of a pain, if I was more balanced and less sleepy all the time. So yeah, I'd probably do it. Just annoys me, that you still need one hour in this scenario. Otherwise I could free up a lot of space and save good money and some work in terms of a bed, mattress, winter cover / summer cover, washing,…
By the way: I love the night. I would really enjoy roaming around at night all the time. Also going to events in the city, not worrying about getting the last train home.
Someone who likes traveling or has international work, would need to worry about jetlag or scheduling international calls.

I was an insomniac for some years. If I got 2 hours of sleep a night, it was a good sleep. Now I sleep for a couple hours and I'm up for an hour and go back to sleep a couple more. Not has tired during the day now. I learned to take things easy and rushing around doing stuff all the time turned out to be a waste of time. I learned to "Be still and know who is God" thing. Life is much better now. Being a little sigma, I never needed the company of others much. I am fine just setting around reading and doing my hobbies now that I am retired. If you run your life by a clock, you will always be rushing around trying to fix stuff. It will fall apart anyway in time, like everything does. Concerns about time only makes you older faster.

The massive gigantic inexpresible issue with this is that you still have to get to sleep. I've considered the question would I give up needing to sleep at all before, and my answer has always been yes, because it takes me so long to get to sleep. It can easily take me up to an hour to get to sleep. However, if I still have to get to sleep every night anyway... I'm not sure how worth it that would be to me.
Having said that, right now I don't own that much because I'm still relatively young. So if it's a one and done thing I'd give up half of what I own now and then use my extra time to earn back what I'd given up relatively quickly and then I'd be in the positive and still have an extra 6 hours to play with each day, which would be nice

I'd take that in a heartbeat. Take the night shift -- which generally pays a fair bit more in my industry -- and then spend the day running my errands at my leisure, doing hobbies, or just enjoying time outside on a nice day; in the evening, I'll have plenty of time to socialize without having to worry about getting to bed at a reasonable time.
Doesn't hurt that I'm young -- half of what I own isn't really all that much, and I'd be able to replenish a few years' worth of retirement savings pretty quickly.

On the note of the end slides... Actually I imagine you might see more demand for food simply because people's bodies are expending more energy during their waking hours. Additionally, there probably aren't many people kept from being obese by their waking hours, outside of a few edge cases where working a few more hours might be enough to afford excessive amounts of the wrong food on the table.
P.S I love the end slides and wish more people would use them!

I already only sleep 5-6hr a day, so I'm already not wasting much time of the day. On the other hand, I work between 8 and 14hr a day, mixed computer work and workshop work.
But we can tell the question comes from a very specific place. I have worked until 3am. The problem is not so much sleep, than actual physical exhaustion: the muscles get numb and sluggish, the eyesight decrease, you think slower. You just need resting time, and it's not necessarily sleeping time. Just scrolling on the phone refills my energy level, and help me get a sort of second motivational breath.
I don't own enough stuff to survive on half of what is left, but had I, I would indeed gladly trade several dozen thousands euros for perpetual motivation, energy and focus, even just within my normal wake hours.

106 extra days(159 if counted in regular days with 8h sleep) a year if you slept an hour a night, yeah, that's quite a bit. Somewhere around 3-5 months of extra activity, which you could partly use year 1 and 2 to recover the losses. Also it doesn't say you can't sleep more, just that you only need one hour. Sign me up :D On the negative side, you would have to increase food/drink use as well, and even if refreshed, not sure how much wear/tear it'd cause the body. Even then, with aformentioned money making, losing 5 years of your life(due to use) to gain a year every 3 years, seems to add up.

You could practice using your brain as an alarm clock. Think about what time you want to wake up as you're falling asleep, visualize it if that helps. Over time your circadian rhythm should recognize and conform to this. Kind of like how your body sometimes will naturally wake up before your alarm, it's basically using the same mechanism

The longest I've went without sleep is 6 days straight. I played Oblivion most days and on the 5th day I drove my mom somewhere, I can't remember where to now, as It's been around 10 years ago. After day 2 I stopped feeling sleepy but kept a slight fog and found that concentration was more difficult and would forget small tasks, like forgetting to empty my inventory in the game and having to sit through another loading screen. I only went to sleep because I got bored of the game and didn't want to go back out into the woods on day 6.
