Elastic Laces Vs Standard Laces - Which Are Faster For Triathletes?

  • If you want faster triathlon times, one of the best places to look is the transition. Think of it as free speed. To improve at transitions, many triathletes use elastic laces in their runnings. But, are they really faster?

There are two schools of thought when it comes to elastic laces. Firstly, they make your transition quicker, so they must be quicker. And, secondly, yes, they do help for a faster transition, but they're maybe not the fastest laces for the actual running.
Today, we're not going to put the actual running leg to the test. That's because there are just too many variables here. However, if you'd like to see that, make sure you leave us a comment and we'll get Mark to go to work and come up with some sort of test...
So, this video is all about the transition. Like we said, this is pretty much free speed since you're saving time rather than needing to get fitter to run faster.
We'd love to read your thoughts on this one, so make sure that you get stuck in down in the comments below.
If you enjoyed this video, make sure to give it a thumbs up and share it with your friends. 👍

Xtenex. No locking ever and because they are knobbly, you can adjust them to proper tension between every loop.

I regularly get blisters without them, not sure I want even more chafing. Since I'm not even considering winning a triathlon or even my age group I can afford losing a few seconds in transition ☺

I don't use them because I usually wear tri shoes that come without laces by default.

Hi! I'm just a youth triathlete that's new to the game, and constantly worrying whether I'm doing this or that right during the triathlon, what's best for me, and if I'm training right and dropping times (I'm a little paranoid, haha). These videos and this channel in general has been so beneficial for me to see exactly what I need to do to be the best athlete I can be, and helps me continue to do the sport I love, while also educating me on the topics. Thank you so much for the channel, as it has saved my life, haha :)

I always race with elastic laces but do the majority of my training with normal laces so that I have good stability for most of my running. Will put my elastics in a week or so before a race to get the tension dialed. I do love it when you see people racing who have spent thousands of £'s on a set of deep sectioned wheels to shave time off their bike split, only to give it all back by having a sit down while they thumble with their shoe laces in T2

A friend suggested elastic laces before my first triathlon. I tried them and now use them all the time, even in my walking shoes. I have thin feet, and shoes basically never quite fit, but I can tie the elastics such that the shoes now fit the length of my foot much better. I was therefore quite surprised to hear in the video that there is the ‘con’ that elastics mean feet slip more. Mine slip much less! So, no cons at all for me!
And it is nice to come in the house and just be able to slip shoes off...

I used elastic races for shorter distance races for a season and loved them but used them for a marathon and they made my feet numb from being too tight causing muscle issues for the rest of the race so i switched back to conventional. The quick release version you showed for normal laces is interesting, would definitely give that a go.

Help! I have my first 70.3 on the weekend in Edinburgh, and I’m really struggling to get my wetsuits off. I made the mistake of getting a front entry Run swim Run wetsuit (Huub), and I can’t role my shoulders back enough to get it off. Any tips?

I started with regular laces and tried tying things on a cold day. That didn't work. Since then, all elastic laces all the time and I love them. I have used a variety and the ones I like the most are Xtenex laces. They let me adjust easily on the fly and also set the tension to different amounts throughout the lacing.

I’m using it all my training and races. It’s important to fit them before race on training session, but then it’s perfect solutions. What’s more for me, they never untied during race and we don’t have to tied twice...😁

I almost skipped this video but I'm glad I watched it! I use elastic laces on race day and depending on the variables I notice I develop blisters. I've run a 1:21 Half with no problems but then again I've developed a blister during a mile interval workout. For me it may depend on how hot it is during the event. I live in Texas so training runs these days are on average over 90 degrees Fahrenheit and I tend to sweat a lot! Back to the drawing board!

since starting triathlon ive put elastic laces in all my running shoes and never had any issues..working with a budget I use the toggle that way I can use the laces again when I get new shoes the only down side to that is the new shoes have to be blues to match the laces I already have

  • @Dennis-de1ji
    @Dennis-de1ji 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Here I am asking this question... Why even bother with elastic laces when you can do this with default ones? Here's how I do this...
Step#1 :Tie up your shoes really well without it feeling uncomfortable!
STEP#2 : Grather the laces and take them under one of the zig zags!
STEP#3 : (On the second use) just put your foot halfway into the shoe, grap the tongue with one hand and put your mindle and index finger inside the shoe and push the hill back,at the same time push your foot a bit further in and.... It will be on in no time
It might sound hard but it is just a way to tie up your laces once and not having to do it again for months! I do it to both running and casual shoes I wear and Once I did that for my StanSmiths I used them every day without having to tie them up for about 3 MONTHS

I use elastic races for my running shoes all the time, Getting ready for Ironman Bolton next weekend and may try a run or 2 with normal laces this week to see how they feel. I have never had problems with the elastics and like that i can tighten them easily with the fixings if i need to, I would be worried that normal laces would come undone when running.
