- How to replace the gas struts on any truck cap, also called a truck topper. My cap is a Leer but this process is the same for any brand. A quick, simple, easy to do installation that can be done by anyone.

This video was one of the highest quality tutorials I've ever seen.
🎉🎉
Appreciate the short and simple video and the clear and concise instructions. This is the 3rd video I watched trying to figure out if I could swap out the struts myself and the only one that showed the correct way to measure what size strut I need and as an added bonus the audio didn't sound like it was recorded with a potato (my pet peeve with many auto repair videos). Great video, keep up the good work!
What a great comment. I myself am giving you a heart for all that you commented on! 💖
Thank You, After wrecking Clips getting them off in previous years, I Now Know How EASY It Is. Appreciated
Glad to help
Best video for camper shell strut replacement.
Thanks.
Great video with all the info I needed. Thanks!
Dude you did an awesome job at this and from all blue collar workers; we appreciate you! Keep it up, definitely will be subscribing 😎
Short and simple . I went to talus and gave up on seeing how to replace it . Thanks for the knowledge
Yay! Quick and easy! My kind of repair. Thanks for the tutorial.
Great video! I just replaced the struts on a Leer, exactly as you outlined, and it took less than two minutes.
Thanks!
Glad it helped!
Thanks so easy
Great video -- well done! It looks like I don't have to remove the clip all the way before removing the old strut -- just pop it out. And I don't have to do anything to the retaining clip when installing the new strut -- just push. Very useful information -- thanks for posting this video!
Glad it helped
Good clear video,thanks
You just got a new subscriber, my man
You're awesome. Saw the quick fix idea video also using a search video. Our Leer camper shell back window struts won't gave up the ghost the other day. Thanks for sharing your quick fix AND your installation demonstration. Cheers and Happy camping. 😊
Glad it helped. Happy camping!
Nice, quick and dirty and answered my question about how to measure what you need. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
I needed to figure out the pound rating I needed and now I know. Thanks!!!
Thanks bud
Thanks a lot. Great video!
Super like for a super easy how to do. Thanks muchly 🙂👍
No problem 👍
Nice and easy like you said I followed your video. They went in 123 great job.
Glad it worked out for ya!
T H A N K S ! Very helpful!!
Thank you !!
You said propping the window all the way open makes it easy to work on. I guess it's possible to remove the gas struts with them in a closed or half-closed positions, but I think it's much more difficult. In other words, it's a strong recommendation to prop the window fully opened. Even with my old degraded gas struts they still had some opening & pushing strength left in them.
Thank you Mr Cole!
Very welcome!
Thinner goes to the bottom because there is oil in the strut and keeps the o-rings lubricated. If the o-ring dries out then the strut will loose it's pressure and stop functioning. This is what actually happens over time as it is but will happen quicker if installed upside down.
Awesome, thanks for the info.
Hell yeah
Great video. I have a similar cap, getting on in years but struts still work well. Glad to see it's a pretty simple fix, once the time comes.
Any guesses as to when your provincial parks will open? We have 3 weeks in August booked at 3 different campgrounds.
Thanks. The current date to re-open for overnight camping at Ontario Provincial Parks is June 3rd. We hope the stay at home order doesn't get extended again. Happy camping!
Thank you
You're welcome
Great video thanks!
Glad you liked it!
First off, thank you for the straight forward content!👌✅ second, what is the “cover” at the bottom of the camper lid called? The one that seals up against your tailgate? I’d greatly appreciate the help! Stay blessed!
I don't know what it's officially called. I'd just call it the lip.
@@CampingwiththeColes did your topper come with it already?
@@dirtbikejunkie575 yes. It's built specifically for the make and model of my truck.
Thanks, man!
You're very welcome
I am not sure how the release mechanism works and I have even removed mine successfully with a small/medium flat head screwdriver as shown ... I just don't get it.
Awesome, thanks
Our pleasure!
On some of these gas struts, there will be the OEM part#. That makes ordering the right ones easy without guess work. As an example, mine were C16-02621. I don't know what the numbers shown in the video mean.
Would be nice if you were clear on how to measure the strut. So it is end to end ! Too quick on the video and I am looking on my phone. Could not see from the video. So I watched some other video that was better. Just thought you’d want to know
Snap off snap on… easy
Great video. Do you ever need to lubricate the window rails? If so, what do you recommend? I just bought a leer 180. They are extremely difficult to close fully seated and latched. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for watching. I've had this cap for 5 years and on a previous truck a similar cap for 7 years and I've never needed to lubricated the window rails. Soooo, I have no recommendation for you. Sorry
I would use Jigaloo
I have a Leer Camper shell and I just replaced my original struts rated at 57 lbs with a new pair rated at 60 lbs. The Serial Number on both pairs is identical. There is much more resistance at closing than the previous pair. Any way to reduce the resistance any at all on a newly installed pair?
I don't think they're adjustable at all.
Thank you!
You bet!
Very helpful, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
