The story goes that No Doubt never made it big until Gwen and the bassist broke up and she started writing songs about it. The rest is history. This is one of those songs.

Many videos of this time had live stage footage-kind of a grunge authenticity thing. Otherwise, the video highlights how the media and to some degree their record label wanted to put Gwen out front as the commercial sell instead of the whole band. The idea of selling records on her beauty as opposed to the total group talent. Over 500 subs-nice job Cash!

Gwen dated the bassist of the band, Tony Kanal, for several years and she wrote this song after he broke up with her. They decided he should stay in the band in spite of the breakup. They have said in an interview that performing this song live was like opening up a wound each time and was emotionally draining for both of them. I thought the video perfectly shows this complicated dynamic between them and Gwen's heartache. The video also shows a secondary story of the jealousy the male band-mates felt at the media attention Gwen was getting when they rose to fame. I really think it's a great video with a great story! I guess I can see how it doesn't make sense if you don't know the backstory. Hope people will give it another chance knowing that the emotions expressed by all the band members in the video are real and raw :)
BTW, I like your rating system, haha.

They were high schoolers when they dated. No real true animosity there with their breakup as it coincided around the death of their friend and original front man John Spence. People really overinflated what happened bc it was the early 90's. We were even convinced Marilyn Manson removed his ribs for self servicing reasons lol

Gwen burst onto the music scene with No Doubt’s Just A Girl, and she was a phenomenon like Kate Bush or Christie Amphlett or Cyndi Lauper, just writing a new style for female performers… hell, any performers, really.
Don’t Speak was the second single I knew of theirs, and I thought it showed a huge range when sat beside Just A Girl. I loved both songs and videos. They were a great band with their own style.

Watching old school Gwen on stage makes me really miss No Doubt. They started off as a ska-punk band and performances were very energetic.
Something I like about the Tragic Kingdom album's music videos (like this one, Just a Girl and Sunday Morning) is the ordinariness of the life depicted. There's no reason why someone who plays or even just listens to music like ska-punk can't also want to wear a nice simple dress or even be glamorous once in a while. Or make (in the Sunday Morning video) an overly romanticised meal after band practice.
    People are multifaceted.

Hi Cash, welcome back to the interweb and good afternoon from the Midlands of England. I've just caught you after doing my civic duty of voting in local elections, some of which were postponed from last year due to a Chinese global biological attack.
Thanks for doing a No Doubt reaction. I don't blame you for not crashing this with a lot of commentary, I was really enjoying listening to this again after so many years, not my favourite No Doubt song but it was good to hear something of this quality again. I don't recall seeing this video before. I also lost the plot because I find it distracting that Gwen Stefani switches between a 1940s throwback look with the wavy hairstyle and the patterned dress, and then a Madonna look, which I don't really appreciate. She should just be herself, as you say, she's terrific. This song was their second hit in the UK in 1997, but their only one to reach #1 in the charts.
My favourite No Doubt song is It's My Life from 2003, a cover of a song by British 80s band Talk Talk. I also recommend Gwen Stefani's solo song What You Waiting For, from 2004. While I think about Talk Talk, they had some great hits with their debut single called Talk Talk in 1982, It's My Life in 1984, and Life's What You Make It in 1986. Which version of It's My Life is best? I couldn't possibly say. All of these deserve the full bottle of wine as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for this. I'm currently on coffee right now, but... down the hatch!

Hi Cash, This is Kevin & am new to your channel.
This popped up on my page & decided to check it out...
Nice reaction, Thank you for that...
Truly a beautiful song about a broken heart/breakup.
I can agree with you on the video, But will also say that a lot of music video's
Don't always have anything to do with the actual song/lyric's...
And for that, Thankfully We listen to music/song's....
As especially during the 80's You could play a cd picking out almost any song,
Crank it up & have your tv on but the volume off & the majority of song's
Usually blended quite well with what was on the tv screen.
Music video's are nice But really all they are is short little movies with the music being the soundtrack for them,
Not all music video's are like this & it's really great when one actually has meaning to the song that's playing.
Probably why I usually just listen to the song especially when it's a first time hearing it.
I have subscribed to your channel,
Looking forward to watching more of your reaction's As you open the door to new music in your life

Gwen started out with this LA Ska band, No Doubt, which blended Mexican folk, Punk and Ska. The Video was created to promote the band, more so than the song. The song refers to a broken relationship between Gwen and Kanal, the bassist. There's other videos for this if you're interested.

I am sorry you only gave this a partial glass, but that's your reaction as you say and all is good.
Sometimes the video enhances the music, sometimes not. In this case, the song was written about Gwen and her band bassist Tony Kanal. I think they dated for several years, then he broke up with her. What makes this song amazing to me is that Tony still was part of the band even as they performed this song, and he knew it was about him and Gwen.

I don’t think you got the video. It was about how once they became successful, Gwen was a star and the other band members were shoved in the background. They were cut out of photo shoots and Gwen would get magazine spreads/covers by herself. When they started out they were all equals. When fame hit, everything became about Gwen. I thought it was brilliant to put that in the video. To show what so many bands deal with when the media separates the singer from the rest of the band.

Often the video has nothing to do with the song and IMO is more of a distraction to a really good song such as this. I'm old school and I would rather let the music direct the video of my imagination. A breakup song has a very personal meaning to many of us and I think this one is very poignant. I watch many reaction channels and I understand some people ONLY react to music with a video. There are also those who NEVER use song with a video and concentrate on the music only. I see in this case, you had to split your vote between a song you seemed to like and a video you did not. I am in agreement with you on both counts. I have had the song on my play list since it was released but this it the first time ever I saw the video. I'll keep the song and forget the video. I'm enjoying watching you make your way through this new endeavor. If you enjoy music from this era, try some Garbage; Stupid Girl '95, I Think I'm Paranoid '98, Only Happy When It Rains '95, Cheers.
