I can understand why these college students from Vermont sing this homage to California’s renown warm, sunny weather. They’ve probably watched on tv the New Year’s Day Rose Parade in Pasadena, Los Angeles County with its colorful flower floats under clear, blue skies while Vermont and most of the northeast is in the depth of cold winter buried in chilly snow under gray skies. Michelle and John Phillips (who were from L.A.) were staying in NYC that winter in 1963. They felt homesick and inspired them to write this song. But it wouldn’t be until 1965 after they formed the Mamas and Papas that they recorded this song which would become their legacy masterpiece. Interestingly, the song has been categorized as “Sunshine pop folk rock” music genre which originated from California in the mid-60s. The Beach Boys would record their own version of this song.
One of the better covers. The line “ well I got down on my knees” needs aggressive diaphragm inflection. Else…you repeating a melody and not SINGNG! Harmonies had a good tone.
