Some things to think about when developing or improving a property in regards to well location. Consult your local hydro geologist, and spend some time determining the best place to drill a well. There are trade offs of course.. but keep in mind, static water level, recovery rate, amount of wire , security, etc.

Very informative here. My grandfather was from the Highlands of Scotland. Here in N.S Canada he dug wells and lined them with rock for a living.
He located wells by using a divining rod. Since he did this his entire life for a living. He was good at it. The locals called these people water witches.
As a driller for half my lifetime I can say with certainty that surface topography has no effect in finding potable water. Underground geology does not follow surface topography period. They are basically 3 methods of finding good water and all have some risk. The best but most costly is to hire a ground sonar crew very expensive but if there is water they can tell exactly where. The second is just picking spot where is best for your purposes and trusting luck you hit water as water sands are more wide spread than most think. The 3rd way is dousing and yes it does work but it depends on who is doing it. Not everyone can douse for water for most it just don't work for them. However they are those who it does work for but be aware they are lot of so called dousing that are scam artists or fake. Those who use gadgets like wire or pendulum devices I have found not to be any better than just taking your chance on luck. Those who I have over years found to be gifted always seem to use a forked fruit tree limb. As for this video the only water you would find with the topography method is surface water and surface water in most cases isn't considered as safe potable water.

@@myricegirl I am not familiar with the geology in California I am in the eastern mountains of WV. So I can't with certainty say without seeing it. The one thing I do know your area is suffering extreme drought and has had a huge effect on water tables across the state. That said it should be possible if you have the financial ability to find deeper aquifers. I would definitely go the route of hiring a Company that does underground sonar that can detect deep water before drilling. Deep drilling is costly and you don't want to take risk not having at least some idea what is there before you spend that much. If any water is there ground sonar/radar can find it with pretty good accuracy.

I just asked a friend in Sunland who actually drilled a well, he has plenty of water,
and he told me even the dry riverbed out front of his property has a torrent of underground river just 32 ft beneath, thats encourageing .
@@myricegirl yeah but one must be careful surface water often must be treated to be potable. Water passing through a river bed of gravel is still surface water and has contamination. To get potable clean water in most cases comes from below bedrock level. To get to it a well is drilled with casing ran to point below any surface water and grouted to seal well then drilled down to a clean aquifer or water sand. Of course surface water can be used with a approved treatment system.

And people will also need to consider if a well rig can get into the location, that can be a huge determining factor on well placement. Thanks for doing this series.
I would argue with you about seeking a low lying areasl. In the 1970s we drilled 6 wells, 1 was 1800 ft. My parents were preppers but in reality they were just farmers. We drilled wells at the tops of hills and in low areas. The low area wells became "Sour" very quickly, and the higher wells are still in use (but one which was capped). Our well driller of choice explained that water follows the rock line, and that altitiude is not bad, after all there are springs on the tops of mountains.

you can pull water from a 90' water level with a hand pump. its called a Sucker Rod Pump or Bison pump. pretty much just like pumping a pitcher pump but submerged below the 90' water level.
You can also dig a while using a PVC pipe with the solid brass power nozzle for a garden hose on one end and a threaded end on the opposite side for your water hose and this will work really well just something to think about it's also good for loosening up the Soil Breaking rocks loose getting through mud cetera
Excellent information. Thanks for sharing. The only thing that I would add is that you must plan where your septic tank and drain field are going to be located if applicable. Usually, the county will require the well to be at least 75 to 100 feet away (more in some areas) from the septic system.
in my own experience having worked for Lake Valley Well in eastwrn North Carolina, it is the health department who pinpoints the spot where the well will be drilled... by norm it should be at least 50ft from the house on either direction and also this way it frees from liability to the driller as well as the property owner whether water is found or not and how deep the well will be because, as youknow, this is the most important factor...
That's me brother! I spend $2,000 and drilled 330 feet only to find nothing. The driller had no idea where to drill. I'm back to square one. Problem, I live on top of a hill and water is a long way down and I have limited access to areas where the rig will fit. Perfect timing, I will try again with better information.

My grandfather used dowsing rods to find his two well locations and dug them by hand with a shovel and bucket. I am glad in this age of science we know that dowsing is grade a bs.
Exactly- I am a female but my grand daddy showed me when I was just a little girl back in the 80s ; I just showed my old man who was in the military 17 years and been all around the world but was clueless to it- I felt smart for a min, it was cool that my little simply southern self knew something useful to share
Usually they were dug by hand, with shovels, buckets and whatever else they had. Windmills came along and made access to deeper water easier as they also developed drilling technology. This was sometimes also accomplished by hand. Those same tools are still available in modern form today made from stronger materials. As far as a video, There was a episode of Bonanza where the oldest brother helped a guy dig a deep well to reach water for many ranchers.

Where I live in Australia all wells and bores drilled for a hundred years are logged so you can access this info a great service free
Security at a well site can be as little as a fence or small building to cover the well head. It can also be as much as a lock and key reinforced building to protect the well head from people who wish to damage equipment or make the well unusable in some way. The threat can come from people, animals and even the environment if debris gets washed down into the well, It can get contaminated. A simple locked cap can prevent alot of those problems.
Water is sooo important especially when you live in the desert like my property in So. Utah.

i have anecdotal evidence there is a well in my garden that has been covered up with a precision of about 5x1m on the exact location. watching your video, i hope itll help haha

As someone who is familiar with different methods on how to find water it is not advisable for the public or someone with no experience to even think of looking at geological maps or the lay of the land to find water. I use the dowsing method which is about 90% successful and considering the drilling costs you do not want to create costs which waste money drilling holes everywhere. Finding water is not for the person who does not know what they are doing . Geological maps are not always accurate, they can be good if the area has had extensive mining otherwise they are normally created by geology students doing a study paper of an area as part of their course.Dowsing takes years of practice and there is nothing mystical about it . There are a lot of DIY things that people can do this is not one of them ,given the costs involved. My colleague who taught me the skills has done over 2,000 bore holes with over 92% success rate , so very experienced and a geologist and has worked all over the world although mostly in the Uk. He also does boreholes for irrigation, leisure centres ,golf courses which all require much larger amounts of water than for domestic use.

I think the type of drilling rig you hire is also important.
For example, the “cable rig” or “pounder” is much more successful than a rotary rig. It takes longer, but can crack the rock open allowing water to flow in whereas a rotary can just bore on past or even seal off the water.

My property (30+ acres in VT) has a portion which is at the lower half of a "hill" where I have a small creek, that more often than not "trickles" in dry weather, sometimes dries up (When there is snow/water runoff from the top of the "hill, the creek is active); My question is: Is it a good place to dig where the water 'pools' or where its moist, when the rest of the creek is dry, during the 'dry' spells? I'm planning on digging (by hand) a pitcher's pump type of drill. Your videos are great

When well was drilled there were maybe 4 wells within a square mile of this well. Since then, city water got run here. Subdivision developers "discovered" the area. Even so, I estimate 20 wells in the sq. mi. More users, less water.
Now, his lawn sprinkler system "pumps the well dry" in 90 minutes. Pump shuts down. 60 minute 'rest' and it pumps for 90 minutes again...

50 years ago we had 130 acres in southeastern Arizona and my husband used a wire hanger and witched it and it worked. However the water was very salty but usable

After a few minutes the hangers (pointed downwards)crossed , in fact they absolutely crossed each other
That is where he hired a driller to drill
They did hit water .I do not remember how deep.i am guessing 20 feet,
The pressure was good but water very salty and unusable
The neighbor, about a mile away, directly south of us came running over because his pressure had dropped considerably and he was very unhappy
We did not use the well anyway because of the saltiness
But seeing the two hangers swing quickly and cross each other was amazing to me. Anyway my husband hauled water until.he had a stroke
After that, very unfortunately, I sold the property and moved to the city two hours away
Now, thirty years later. A mine was found north of town water was piped from town through our former property (which was south of town) my daughter looked up the property on google and owners south of the property are selling their properties at one hundred thousand dollars an acre
Each parcel could be divided upto three ways, including your own, so evidently the parcels had been divided many many times
I would have had to sell it shortly after water was brought in because the real estate taxes were already getting steep, but we would have certainly sold it for more money

i had my well put in with one of the cable pounder rigs its 100 feet deep and we are getting just under 10 gals a min well driller hit the bedrock at 4 and a half feet i have pumped it dry but had water right back in just a few mins and it took me a good part of the day to run the water down enuff with the garden hose filling up the swimming pool as long as i dont run the hose at full it doesent go down at all

I have a spring in a ravine/gully. My house is about 200 ft up the mountain, and about 150 feet away. As I understand it, one gets a better recovery rate (better flow) the closer they put the drill in the fractures in that wash/gully, and then I just pump it over to my house?? I would of course like as much recovery as possible, and wouldnt mind a farther pump or wire. Is my understanding correct?
I bought a couple lots and old house on back taxes. It had not been lived in for several years. The subdivision now has community water at a cost to install. My question is, if this was not on the property before, there must of been a private well. How do I find it?

Would have liked a demonstration of the tools/equipment to locate your underground water sources. I imagine its similar to locating underground wires or pipes with a transmitter/receiver. The geologist i believe use geo-phones and other ultrasound/mechanical wave technologies similar to finding oil , gas , and other natural resources. But i haven't seen a good demonstration of this yet for any natural resources that lets me understand how to truly read the device and do the location. It be cool if one could do his own water locating from a hand held device just to double check options that the drillers are going to do.
If you drill deeper, is the quality of water better? We have very hard water and have ours drilled at 150 feet only and want to improve the quality of the water that we are getting. We have already gotten a water softener system but water is still hard.

I would like to hear your opinion on dousing. I have recently been introduced to it and have started using the technique for picking different foods since I have alot of food sensitivities. I have seen quite a few instances now where dousing has been effective. However I am still not totally convinced that dousing can do everything people claim it to be able to do.

Totally cool with most wire/pipe finding equipment as the demonstrations where really good. But for natural resources like water , oil , gas ,mineral ores/rocks i just haven't understood anything on the exact equipment. Sure i know the theory of how its mostly done but like to know how to operate the equipment correctly.
Any advice to those of us in Texas (and other places) that have to drill a couple hundred feet to get water on less than an acre of land?

I have a brand new and first submersible pump and first well casing for my small residential property. 14 months later I'm told I have a broken wire and the contractor, who installed, this new system only 14 months ago, wants to excavate and charge me a second time.. Should he be able to put in a new wire WITHOUT excavating a second time?

You say you can hit a "static water level" at 30 ft. which will supply you water,
but then you say, that's within a well that's 200 ft down ?
My question is if you can hit drinkable usable water at 30 ft ( static level)
then why would you go thru all the expense of drilling 200 ft down. ?? Can
you elaborate if these are 2 different kinds of wells ?
You would think 1 static well at 30 ft should be sufficient.
The best situation and the least expensive too me is a developed spring that is gravity fed to where you need it. That is hard to find. I like backups so having both a spring and a well is peace of mind though redundant. Having both for me also means I would have at least 2 different pumps thus more backups. Good question!

I can't have a well dug on my property as I'm in the city, nor could I afford it, BUT I have an inground swimming pool which was vandalized (pool liner cut) and it's just sat there for about 4 yrs, my town was built on a quicksand bed, and when my pool was constructed, they hit it at 8 feet and had to back fill it to 6 feet or they wouldn't guarantee the bottom wouldn't fall out, my question is: Could I bust thru the pvc pipe drain at the bottom and put a hand pump somehow, if so r they costly

Well I dont see a video from you on dowsing yet so can I ask what your thoughts are on it? I'm on the fence about it. I am looking to buy 15 acres from a guy I know and he was saying that there is a guy around here who can tell you where to drill and how deep the water is. Of course from the internet searches I've done, it looks like I can find depths of neighboring well on my own, just have to figure out where to drill
We moved from Florida to the North Carolina mountains. We have a spring fed pond on our property. We never believed we'd have problems finding water. A local company drilled two wells (700 feet and 900 feet) without success and to the tune of $20,000. We ended up tapping into the pond to get water.
My husband passed away suddenly, and now I can't sell my house because finance companies won't accept it with the way the water is. To top it off, we haven't had any rain in months, and the pond is running dry. Any suggestions?
Christine Conroy .... There Are Whole Towns That Get Their Water From Natural Springs... There Is A Proper Way To Do It... You Just Have To Find Someone Who Knows How.
My Grandpa used to do it. He laid out my parents well that way & it is still going strong after 35 years. Wish I knew how to do it!

Chuck. I am in Knox county which is pretty far from Hardin County. The geology there Devonian Age rocks with Cretaceous ones on top of that in many places. There are lots of shale units to avoid. The carbonates are better producer. I have contacts throughout the state that can get you well records and water quality reports. Photo liniments is the way to site a well there. 6 inch well is about $12 per foot. Casing is around $15. I will get you as much information as I can. PM me.
all sand here with a high water table, if you dig anywhere with a particularly long handled post digger there will be water in the bottom of your hole.
Same here I have a 20ft well they hit sand at 11ft I paid to have it out it next ones I'll do myself.
A static water level of 30 feet? Sounds like you are on an island in Lake Michigan. Dousing would work well where you live. Flipping a coin would be even better.
In Glennallen Alaskan local well drillers say its 300 to 375ft to even hit water. Hopefully not much more. Cheapest is $50 a foot. So I hope it goes well "lol"

there is a water table beneath the quicksand, but if it can be done cheaply would it be safe to drink if not how could I make it that way?

How do I find a well on a property? I'm working on a property and need to shock the well to get rid of the smell of the water
We have a spring in the back of our property that runs out of the side of a mountain. Is this a good sign to put in a well? There is a ravine near where the water runs out, the water is slow, but with a little effort it can be flowing. The ravine runs down to our house which is a couple hundred yards.
I am just starting on research and have little knowledge about wells, I am determined to learn everything possible!

I was wondering what effect Fracking/Shale gas extraction could have on well water. And is there a way to eliminate the risk. Do topological maps help to find a save spot or area that is save?
Fracking is below the water table and should not cause any problems. They back fill it with sand and water when done.
They could backfill it with seawater but cost to transport it is high due to fuel cost today.

Hello I have a well and cannot find any information describing it.

On the left side of the house there's two one of them looks like it may be the lid to the septic tank and then the other one looks like it's the well itself but I am not for sure then on the right side of the house there's a white with a green lid and I think that is a sewage are either it's a drain off you know where something but I guess the city the courthouse should have all that location shouldn't and if that's true I was wondering is there any way that I can do that online see a map of the house

Here in Montana and I assume other places it is important to place a well outside the mixing zone (a long slightly fanned area down flow of the groundwater flow direction) of the drainfield so as not to contaminate the well. More than a very shallow well not for human use requires health dept approval and an engineer to sign off which requires them to do the work and go through the approval process for you. I have to put something very shallow (hoping to tap a spring) on my place and will be dowsing, wish me luck .. and thanks, binge watching to get all the good info.

Water tends to follow the topography. Lower does not always mean the best place to drill.

We have a well and the property has not been lived in nor has the well been used. What should we first do to ensure safe drinking/cooking water for our household and future animals. My aunt can tell you how deep and where you will hit a gravel. The rods don't bounce for me, but cross. I tried it on a spot for 5 days and the spot moved. A couple of feet, maybe moon position caused it?

Ok dont laugh but im learning, im doing the whole build our own gig (homesteading kinda) is it important to build a well and out in septic first before you build or is it possible to do after build..Thank you
Typically you have to do a perk test for the septic to determine its location in order to pull a building permit but codes vary. You can install the septic system after you build. I like to now I have water so I drill first. You can even consider drilling the well and building your house around it or at least have it in your basement for example. This protects it from freezing and no one can tamper with it. And its pretty cool to go to the basement in a power outage and be able to draw water from the well with a handpump.
My water well is 450 ft. deep, pump is 420 ft.,and water is 273 ft. from the surface. What size submergible pump would you recommend???

Depends on what youre tryimg to accomplish. Too many variables to discuss on TH-cam. Call your local pump guy amd ask questions
We used 10 HP submersible pump for in 500 feet depth and our bore is 800 feet depth and bore dia is 12" inch.
about a 3hp 25gpm submersible.... im in florida we drill 400'-450' four inch wells but water level avg. is 20-40' which will sustain a 3hp 65gpm with significant head pressure.
horsepower means nothing unless you know how much volume and head pressure you need!!!!!..... wake up
Thanks for the video series. So far your experience aligns with mine. I did use a dowser and could not be more happy with the result - well maybe if he struck gold too... I interviewed a number of Well Drillers and went with my gut feeling - not the flashiest guy or the one that made the big promises. The humble guy that offered advice freely and was experienced. That expertise was worth every penny and the value it added to my property is beyond measure in dollars.
Pastor, I am not a fundamentalist, but I believe "dousing" is divining. It calls upon "outside powers" prohibited by the Scriptures.
My dad was a 30 year well driller. Somebody wanted dousing, he'd say have it done, THEN call me...
The well at his home is 375 ft . Hit clear water at 95 ft., static water level rose to 55 ft in the casing. (20 mi. from you.)
His drilling rig required 1500 gal/day(trucked in to the drill site.) Needed a deeper well for more water supply.

Never heard of such a thing anywhere in the states.
Many states/counties require a well permit. Check with your local building permit office, they will tell you if you do or not need a well permit. If you live in an area that requires a permit and they find out you drilled a well without one, they could make you retroactively permit it (if they are nice about it) or make you abandon and seal it (and you could further be subject to additional penalties and/or fines).
I believe you need many permits in some places. In Oregon, you can't start anything until you get a permit and a septic installed on rural land.
