I played this a lot even though I played it in the arcade first. There are two home brew versions of this and the thing that really gets me is one of them is a 4kb version, which is the same size this ROM was and the new 4k version is UNBELIEVABLE. It doesn't have intermissions like the other home brew version does but it's so much closer to the arcade version than this one was and, like I said, it was the same size. Why did Atari have to rush this version out? Imagine how impressed we would have been back then with the homebrew 4k version! I would have played it non-stop and probably gotten grounded from it but who cares! lol

Similar things for me: the guinea pig scene in V the miniseries. That terrified me so much I was afraid of the dark for about 4 months. I had no clue how astonishingly cheesy and phony it looked. Also Batman Returns (the movie). I thought it was great, and I thought I would still like it, then I noticed that all Batman and Catwoman did when they were on screen together is make an endless string of absurdly stupid cat and bat puns. Oh and The Great Outdoors. When I was 10, the subtitles of the raccoon conversations were the ultimate height of hilarity. Fast forward a few decades, I realized that the only thing I cared about was the fact that raccoons were saying the word "shit". Easily amused was an understatement. Turns out the entire movie was an abomination of campy cheesy corniness.

Well you gotta keep in mind of a few things: One this port was programmed by one guy and he only had six months to complete it. Two this was made exclusively for the Atari 2600, a console that was known for having primitive and choppy graphics that today aren’t visually pleasing and to expect the Atari 2600 to look and sound like the Arcade original is naive. And the fact that Ted Frye programmed an entire port in just six months is (regardless of its overall quality) is a feat in its own right.

@@mamusino ET wasn’t the only reason the Crash of 1983 occurred it was also because of companies like Mattel and Commodore tried to put out console like the Intelivision and Amiga CD 32. The market was so overflown with consoles trying to capitalize the success Atari had with the 2600. ET was only a small part of the Crash as games like Pac-Man Atari and the Swordquest games failed and ended up backfiring in Atari’s favor. So while ET wasn’t the only reason why the Industry crashed it’s hard too say it wasn’t a major contributing factor that pushed it over the edge

this is getting to be such a tired statement, that ET game was fully functional. back then, needing a manual to explain the correct way to play a game was a turn off for most "Gamers" of the times'', if it wasn't instantly recognized how to do something immediately, ppl gave up. the et game got the reputation of being "bad" in the 80s because most people simply didn't understand the objective and the game was a failure. im 29 years old, and i notice this STILL with some of the people that grew up with console games in the 80s. anyone i know younger than me its fine, but there seems to be a healthy spot right around age 36, where they will see me playing a 3d game and still un-ironically ask "how do you know where to go?"

I don't understand this outrage. The only big difference between the original and this game is that the ghosts flicker because of the Atari 2600's limitations but it doesn't look that horrible to me. And you see only tow ghosts in this video but there are actually 4. The problem with this video is that the framreate is insufficient.

    • @mrheadbox6951

The problem with this game is more in the marketing and... The deception in it. At the time, people where really thinking it was gonna be incredible! Arcade in OUR house! But here... It was a good solding :7 000 000 games got by people's... But they've created 12 000 000 of them, out of the 7 000 000, on USA at the time you can been refunded by giving back the game so a few millions got back and it make the peoples so scared about games that it was the cause (with the game E.T and the economy of the year) the video game krach of 1983.

Thank you. Thank you. It could’ve been better but it’s still Pac Man at the end of the day. I do think it’d be better if the the maze were less grid-like, even if it’s not gonna be the same maze as in the arcade version. But it’s a solid port and it’s not like Pac Man is or ever was a visual masterpiece even if it was technically impressive for the time.

I remember playing this on a real Atari once as a kid. One of the two games (other being ET) responsible for the '83 crash. Although this is a horrible port compared to the arcade, I still find it somewhat playable. I've seen worse than that. The artwork of the game is funny; instead of dot, it looked like Pac Man was eating POP TARTS (looked like that in the game as well). The thing I hate though is because the game was so rushed, the layout is screwed and it can't register 4 ghosts on screen, making it hard to survive. Ms Pac Man fixed all this. I do have an idea of having myself in a maze and had the Eeveelutions chase me within...

Here's some history: Atari got very greedy back in the 80s and this game was supposed to take 6 months to make. Atari said they wanted it out in time for the holidays so it had to be made in a few weeks. They were so confident it would sell well that they printed about 10 million copies of it. To hide the embarrassment they dumped the games that weren't sold in a New Mexico landfill.
After this plus the failure of the game E.T, neither customers nor retailers trusted the video game industry. That is until Nintendo released the FamiCom in Japan in 1983 and as the NES in N.A in 1985, and marketed it as a toy. We may not have video games today if they hadn't done so.

The Atari is only capable of rendering two sprites at once, so as a work around for that it always renders pac-man and then renders one of the ghosts per frame. Because of the frame rate of the video you can’t see all of the ghosts. The Atari is utterly reliant on the technology of the time; the ghosts would linger on the display of an old tv long enough that you’d be able to see all of them all the time

There was no internet, no gaming magazines to give you a preview. When my mom took me down to whatever store we ordered it from, I was ready to piss my pants. Got home, plugged in the cartridge, and now, as I near 50 years old in a week, all I can say is it was literally a boner killer. Never have I been more disappointed in a game, not even E.T. - which I had a lot of fun with btw. But this game, the colors, the sounds, the entire thing was NOT Pac Man. Looking back, I imagine my mom was thinking, "well shit, you've been bitching about this for a year, and we spent however much $ on it, and you aren't happy." RIP mom, and damn, I hope to never hear these sounds again.
