Could he dunk? I give him props, he was a first round pick, which comes with guaranteed money.

It did not! The 1993 draft was the very last draft where that wasnt the rule.

      RIP me, I guess…
I am honoured you took the time to watch my video 🙂
The goal of my channel is to shine a light on every player who ever played for the Magic, but I am just a fan with no inside information.
All content in the videos is taken from publicly accessible newspaper clippings, game footage and statistics. For many players there is precious little information out there, and they deserve more.
I have done my best to piece the information together, because I believe any player good enough to make an NBA roster deserves recognition and respect, but obviously inaccuracies may remain.
I apologise for any mistakes in the video, I am a lifelong fan of the Magic, as well as every player for the franchise, and I still have all the Geert Hammink cards ever made in my basketball card collection.
Thank you for you comment and good luck! I will continue to aim to do better.

      Like I said: Cool piece!
I appreciate that anyone would take the time putting this together on a rather insignificant Magic player who played almost 30 yrs ago.
I enjoyed it. Thank you guys.
Also: When info such as this is put out, maybe a small correction on facts is good, assuming people will read this far down the comment section 😉
In chronological order of appearance in the clip:
      - I began my LSU career a year before Stanley and Shaq were on campus / were eligible to play. I was not 3rd string big my first year. When Stanley and Shaq came in my second year I hurried to redshirt that year.
      - @1:50 “Hammink wanted to play in the NBA…”. As that is true, I did not hold out and did not skip camps after being drafted. I was/played in Italy when those camps took place.
      - Dale Brown was never my agent. Simply because Dale Brown has never been an agent. Dale Brown was my college coach. Hence, I did not switch agents. Never did. Jack Marin and Harry Kip were my agents (together) my entire pro career, NBA & Europe. I make a point of this as I am somewhat proud of the loyalty factor involved. From myself to them, and them to me.
      - I did not play Summer League. Therefore I did not miss three days and was not ‘behind’. I may have been behind (lol), but not because of missing Summer League or camp. (I did hold out the next summer though, maybe therein lies the mix-up).
      - I never ever ever ever been homesick. I don’t do homesickness.
      - “Delay of Dept. of Immigration”. That’s the first I hear of that. Although this may have happened behind the scenes and without my knowledge, I remember the transition from Italy to Orlando to have gone pretty quickly and smoothly.
      - “Out of shape”. Possibly.. But I distinctly remember running the parking garage inclines across from the O-rena all summer with Dave (strength & conditioning). Painful memory!
      - “headbutted” is possibly the wrong wording. That sounds like David (Vaughn) did so purposely. He did not.
      - The quote “Cant imagine any other 1st round draft pick being waived after only 17 minutes” seems like something I wouldn’t say. Aside from the fact that the message conveyed is indeed pretty unimaginable, I don’t think I would say this. As a matter of fact, I loved my time with the Magic and I am grateful for all the opportunities provided by the entire organization, the DeVos family (Dutch!), Brian Hill, John Gabriel, Dave, teammates, fans, e.a.
      Hope this helps.
Again: Cool piece, keep up the good work (nothing “RIP me” etc 😉)

@@geerthammink1829 Thank you so much, it absolutely helps!
I can't thank you enough for this incredible insight. It has helped me to see the spots where I went wrong, and will help me be able to do better for future videos.
      - Firstly, the LSU part is 100% on me and a clear blunder. I did not do enough research there as I was of course more focussed on the Orlando section of your career. I need to do better.
      - I apologise for describing the time before your first camp as a holdout. It was described as such in this Orlando Sentinel article from July 15th 1993: i.imgur.com/bAiigc9.png but maybe there is a terminology or timing issue at play.
      - The way the highlighted section in the July 15th article is worded: "on the advice of his agent and LSU coach Dale Brown", coupled with the following article from July 29th: i.imgur.com/TZqHOQF.png led me to the misunderstanding that Dale Brown was acting as your agent at the time (as well as being the LSU coach).
Now that you have clarified, it is clearer that the sentence "on the advice of his agent and LSU coach Dale Brown" refers to two different people! It just confused me because in the July 29th article he seemed to be making a lot of 'agent-like' comments. I apologise wholeheartedly for this misrepresentation.
      - On 'missing the first 3 days', I think this was a misunderstanding from me as to what was rookie camp and what was summer league. I am mistaken in thinking that in the 90s they were one and the same, so I think I have misrepresented you missing the first 3 days of camp (reported in this Sentinel article from July 18th): i.imgur.com/tmZyTcx.png as summer league by mistake. Once again, I apologise there for getting the terminology wrong.
      - 'Behind on the plays', came from the subtext of the July 15th article ( i.imgur.com/bAiigc9.png ), again it seems I missed up which part of the summer this article referred to.
      - The 'homesickness' bit, here is another spot where I need to do better. I made the mistake of making an assumption based on the tone of this Sentinel article from April 10th 1994: i.imgur.com/MM5UgLe.png where your fiancee was described as being homesick, but you were just quoted as saying you didn't enjoy your time in Cantu. I understand there is a difference and that I joined dots that were not there, and for that I apologise.
      - The Department if Immigration issue was reported in the Sentinel on April 21st 1994, so I assume it happened: i.imgur.com/N5dXuDC.png
      - 'Out of shape'... Definitely words of my own volition! However your physical conditioning was described as 'disappointing' in the Sentinel on July 17th 1994: i.imgur.com/vKuU4h3.png ... Maybe the Sentinel beat writers needed to run some of those garage inclines with you :/
      - "Headbutted" This is another spot I can improve. I had read the whole article where you described working with David in the post and he flicked his head back and cracked you in the nose, so when I said 'Headbutted' I did so with the full story present in my mind, but the watchers of this video didn't read the full article, so I need to do a better job of conveying a clearer picture... I hope nobody actually thought David came at your with a flying headbutt to try and steal your rotation spot ;) !
      - The last one, there is a quote (reported to be from you) in this Sentinel article from December 9th 1995: i.imgur.com/SRsMl97.png However I did make the critical mistake here of paraphrasing a direct quote, which won't happen again.
Thank you once again, sincerely, for taking the time to point out the issues.
I will be much more diligent in future, and I am now double the Geert Hammink fan that I was before this interaction.
      Best of luck Coach!

      Interesting..!
I have never read nor seen any of those articles you mention in your reply. I (now) can see where you got the original info communicated in the clip.
Let me add one little thing: This all happened almost 30 years ago. It is very well possible I do not remember things correctly. I definitely remember zero re. a delay of a working permit. I also don't remember saying anything about "1st round/17min", yet I am quoted in the article as saying that exactly..
Well, surely the truth will be somewhere in the middle. This convo, here, between you and I, should either clear things up for your viewers or at the very least shed additional light on the issues.
Thanks for making this piece on me and thanks for the best-of-luck-wishes!
