I've sailed in and out of this harbor several times, in all kinds of weather. It is called Hale o Lono for a reason. The ocean teaches lessons and gives likkens, always.
I sailed into this habor many times in some heavy weather on my Rawson 30 ITA and Hunter 52 (ESCAPADE) and the scariest was on the Benetau 51 Oceanis where we had a little protection from 50 knot winds, but the harbor was closed out. I had charter guests for Honolulu Sailing Company new years day 1997 or 98. I timed the set ok, but It got a little sketchy when a gust hit us and I had a little too much jib out. The rudder felt like it wasn't doing much. Easing the jib helped. I hope no one was hurt in this video. The jetty is pretty unforgiving.
It's one thing to try paddle into and punch through that size waves on a 6-man outrigger, but another level of stupid to allow your canoe to be so close to other canoes in that size of waves. Were there rules, saying they had to be so close together?
Hard-core bravery timing in paddle pause between sets critical go time full speed all u got 1 last lunge forward duckdive exquisite. Coming in what's best if u have to ride face of wave unzip scramble to stern bow up or rudder/keel angle sideways to make drop ?
Definitely not a North Swell as this harbor entrance faces due south. Seeing that it was September, more likely a Southwest, Southern Hemisphere, swell with long lulls. Hence the reason they gambled they could start the race safely.

Ocean cares not about the human drive to compete. Ocean can be death, but it is mostly LIFE! The best life!@@11235but
Me too, but I was more Fortunate than what some Here experienced.

Hard freakng core! Where I come from, that race would have been cancelled! But, many of the boats made it out somehow, so much respect.
Sorry brah, no respect for stupidity.

Wait for another day.
needs more footage
one word CANCEL....
Unless you are a stupid idiot sitting on the shore.
Respect for the competitors for braving the conditions and going. Respect to the Ocean's.
WOW!!! I hope no one got hurt....because I did laugh....🤣....Respect to those that competed
*salutes*
getting wet punching through a wave is one thing,, having a full canoe land your head, maybe not so hot.
Unbelievable carnage 😮.. those paddlers are so gutsy
Where was the water patrol??
12 years on in 2024 the event would have been cancelled, for everyone’s health and safety. As if.
Speed and timing: Of the essence.
Humans are a strange species. For every great idea we come up with, we come up with 100 really bad ones. Sadly we don't always say "nah skip it".
A person who knows the ocean knows when it is a good idea to stay in port.
And a person who knows the ocean and knows they can handle it will be more than happy to go out in big stuff like that. BFD! Everyone can swim.
Some of the people here need to watch Australian Surf Boat Races, they have been charging swells for years. 👍🇦🇺
awesome!!!
Insane
Hey, here’s an idea. Next time. Wait for better weather
I leaned hard on the left watching that

Postpone it ! No funny game with those waves !
Not carnage.
Wow wahines!!
If it's called 'No Wahine' then maybe the gals should have stayed out of the water.
Pure stupidity to even try. Organizers should be ashamed.
