    Played one time.....or maybe he just realized what a stupid idea it was to write the date of every time he played that record. Who knows. Congrats on the find. You make me sick. 😉

    I bought a bunch of old Jazz records in Hamburg years ago that all had the same thing were the owner wrote down when he played the record but on the inner sleeves. The guy was a Radio DJ who had a Jazz show in the 70s and 80s and so the writing was there to note when he played the record on Radio so that he could keep track. This could be the same in your case. Especially if there are a few promos in the mix then that would fit the profile. Amazing find!

    I’m sure Mike will pass on the record karma with good deals for his customers. Oh wait -he’ll find the highest priced sold on discogs and then add $50 -$100 on that. Kind of a Scrooge move to buy everything. Save something for the other collectors!

      It's the foolish collector that goes running to another record store and tells them about all the great gems there instead of letting his fellow collectors discover them that makes me shake my head.

    Did the record store say anything when they rang up your purchase? If they recognized you, they might start wondering whether they should be making this sale.
    It's entirely possible that the collection sat untouched for a week, only a tiny number of people know what this stuff is, even the sort of people who go to record stores. Your customer and you may have gotten 99% of what was there.

    Nice. My best find happened a few months ago. I was in a local record store and noticed a sealed copy of “Chet” by Chet Baker. First thing I noticed was the Obi - “Wait, does that say Electric Recording Company?” Looked closer and saw the numbered certificate (number 36, IIRC) inside. They wanted $39 for it. Holy crap! I didn’t have (or ever thought I’d have) any ERC releases, but I do now. No idea how they got this record. Obviously they didn’t realize what they had. Just must’ve been my lucky day…

    Very fun video - always enjoy when you get excited sharing your new additions. However, I'm baffled how all those jazz records ended up in another store. Surely anyone looking to sell jazz records in your area would come to you, assuming they did their research. Anyway, at least it makes for a fun story.

      @bigsweetc6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not all record stores are greedy and need to price at the tippiest top. Some just want to move stuff faster. Remember we’re all record collectors but most people going into a shop will never buy a record over a $100. It’s sad though they all went to one place and I can assure the ones he chooses to sell he won’t pass on his nice price.

  • @mshearn3198
    @mshearn3198 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm jealous of people who find bargains like that. A record shop owner I'm friends with once found a Don Rendell/Ian Carr Shades of Blue LP in a charity shop for next to nothing, the record is worth 2/3K.
    Interesting thing about Herbie Mann, his son used to be a regular on record collecting groups. He's drummer in the band Here Lies Man.

    • @michaelpfister7764
      @michaelpfister7764 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@screaminglordmabuhayka generally Zia has a ton of less experienced people working behind their trade counters and they also take in much more than records. So in my experience their pricing can be all over the place. You’re right, some of their used LP’s are way overpriced, but they often have a hard time pricing OG jazz or understanding the different labels. They usually take a quick look at Discogs and price it at the median. I’ve found some amazing LP’s there for that reason.
      Also think about it… this was probably someone’s grandfather’s/grandmother’s record collection and they didn’t know what they had. If they did, they certainly would have gone to one of the smaller record stores in the Valley that know their shit and got far more money for the collection. Of course, it may have been at some other smaller store here as well. Sure wish I would have come across it regardless of where it was at!

    • @bigsweetc6
      @bigsweetc6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelpfister7764 they didn’t give the records away. He clearly stated most were at or a little above the discogs median. Some record shops actually want to sell records and don’t have to price gouge. Sheesh. Do we want every freaking shop to price everything at the max!?

    Amazing. 🤯 Nothing beats finding minty OG’s of old jazz. My best haul was an estate sale where I landed pristine first Mono pressings of a few of Miles - KOB, Someday My Prince, Quintet/Sextet…a few others and some Monk for $2 each.
    I did pick up a NM first of that Chet Baker & Crew for $50 from a local shop a couple years ago. That was exciting. I sold that one to a guy in Japan for a nice profit to get some others I’d rather have.
