6:17 Actually, wild Bison do exist. As of 2019 there's about 31,000 of them in North America. Nowhere near as many or in as large herds as before, but they're slowly rebuilding.
I live in northern Kansas, a bunch of us still practice the old ways of moving cattle from a horse and roping, throwing and hot iron branding. The old west aint dead, just not popular anymore
The old west ain't dead. Just look at any major inner city American gang war 😂. Not only do you have the gunfights, betrayal, dirty cops, you even have the cocaine and heroin!! Oh and blacks and whites are separated, and natives still live in tha Rez 😢 Just a joke 🍻
I was raised in a one room log cabin... Montana is probably the closest state you can visit and still feel like you're in the Wild West. From old western boardwalk towns and mines, to shootouts and horse stealing, brand swapping on cattle, land wars, etc. Montana still has it.
I remember I took a US history class and we were talking about the wild west time period. My professor said something I'd never forget just because of how funny and random it was "cowboys were the Walmart employees of their time."
17:39 don't forget the Cornish 🙂There is an old saying "if you look down a hole you'll find a Cornishman" and they did go worldwide to places such as the wild west where mining was
Yeah, the moving stones was, I think, a combination of the freeze and thaw of the ground and high winds that pushed them forward. The most interesting thing I learned from early to mid TH-cam Web Surfing/ Deep diving...... fun times.
This is correct! To expand a bit more is that temperature changes from cold to hot produce winds, the gradual heating started to melt and break apart the ice sheets. Wind itself wont move the stones, but giant sheets of ice, with wind blowing over the entire sheet, act like sails. The ice pushed the stones around, then melted and evaporated as the day went on. So it looked like they moved on their own!
As much as I like learning about this time period and like the clothing from this era, I'd probably not survive well in the wild west. One of my 3rd great-uncles was an emigrant from Ireland. He ended up getting a stake in a silver mine in Montana in the mid-late 1800s and became a miner. I am not sure if that is what lead to his death, but he went out to the mine one day to check the ore, came home later on that evening and collapsed on his bed. His partner thought he was asleep and left him there overnight and found him there the next morning, dead. Coroners report said he died of a heart attack.
1:29 Bro, what are you talking about!? Back to the Future part 3 is a classic too! Sure, the first two movies are better, but 3 isn't bad by any means. It's a fun, action packed finale.
I've never watched any of the Back to the Future movies, and i never plan to. Genuinely cringe worthy movies in my opinion, can never bring myself to sit thru one much less all 3 lol
I took a class called “history of the old west” It basically started with “the west” being everything west of the Appalachian mountains, which makes sense. As more and more of the continent got settled by European settlers, what is considered, “the west” was constantly changing. Countless small towns all over the US, and abroad fit the bill of an “old west town” including having outlaws, saloons, brothels, etc. Woodward, Oklahoma was the final home of Temple Houston, the youngest son of Sam Houston. Temple Houston was known as “the lawyer with a gun”. He had been accused of murder several times, but every instance had been deemed self defense. As Oklahoma was getting closer to statehood, there was talk that Temple Houston should run for the first Governor of Oklahoma. Sadly he passed away in 1905, at just 45 years old, two years before Oklahoma gained statehood.
Rango is a great reconstruction of the Western genre, plus its a great movie in general. They had the actors actually act out a lot of scenes for the animators to reference, and the physicality really comes through.
Are we gonna get some guys sitting around a campfire, one playing a jaw harp, one playing a jug, one playing harmonica and one singing about the exploits of Wild Terry?
23:40 my HS history teacher said to go look at an older cemetery and see the discrepancies on age and deaths. Unless you lived a very poor or violent life, most people in this era and eras past would die before adolescence from a childhood disorder or weak immunity or would grow up and die of old age or progressive illnesses. That's why that "average lifespan" of around 50-60 was usually due to childhood mortality, dragging the average or mean to those levels even when people did live to 70+.
I thought that the days of the “Wild West” had ended around 1909-1910 when the Ford T began to become popular ... Or when It was made what is considered the first film of the western genre : “The Great Train Robbery” (1903)
Kansas, nebraska and the dakotas, oklahoma were all considered part of the West. Think Deadwood, Dodge City, etc. Heck, there were gunfights in Springfield, MO and KC. This did change over the period, but my Great great grandmother moved from the relatively settled east Ohio to the frontier area of Kansas (near the MO border) with her five kids to homestead right after the civil war
You forgot that Montana also features regularly in the Old West, and the only way to get further north is to go to Alaska (which has also appeared in a couple of Old West movies).
Should find a video about language evolution of the West in the 18th century. Tbh most "europeans" spoke French before the 1850's and some of 'em cowboys were francophones. It's often overlooked
Seeing a lot of comments about Wild Bison, no, they do not really have large wild populations and they are not really rebuilding in the way you might think from reading comments. The "wild" ones are found in national parks, state parks, and reserves and they aren't completely pure Bison anymore either as they have been crossbred with cattle so most if not all have at least low level of cattle genes. (There are a lot of Bison though, commercial herds. Wild ones though, very few, if you think about the size of land and what they used to be, I mean 30+ mil to 30 thousand is insane. You can also compare that number to any other animal population of North America, including animals that got to near extinction and are somewhat restored and it's a pretty small number.)
I don't particularly care who duels. However I would be okay with those french pistols that fired wax bullets, and the had hand guards on the pistols, and face and neck protectors, basically a way to solve a dispute, without having to kill your opponent. Ian from forgotten weapons did a video about them. They're quite interesting.
@Mr. Terry History If you love westerns, might I suggest the 2011 animated film Rango for your watchlist, it is a loving homage to the spaghetti western with really cool animation and character designs and one of my favorites.
On the other hand, it does gradually cut down on the number of people who think differences can be settled by bloodshed. Which is why I advocate bringing it back exclusively for elected officials. Instead of sending us to fight Whereveristan, they can go duel it themselves.
Funny thing, a dirt house is our country dream... as long as you know how to make one properly (VietNamese here), infact you have to be rich to have one, or very poor XD
I don't think duels are actually beneficial to society, however if two people agree to engage in one that should be up to them. I see it the same as mutual combat which some states allow if both parties consent to fight.

definitely
With the amount of heated online arguments, dueling might be a good way to settle those quickly, but the population of the US would fall by a quarter
