Ricky Nelson - It's Late

  • Rick Nelson was one of the very biggest of the '50s teen idols, so it took awhile for him to attain the same level of critical respectability as other early rock greats. Yet now the consensus is that he made some of the finest pop/rock recordings of his era. Sure, he had more promotional push than any other rock musician of the '50s; no, he wasn't the greatest singer; and yes, Elvis, Gene Vincent, Carl Perkins, and others rocked harder. But Nelson was extraordinarily consistent during the first five years of his recording career, crafting pleasant pop-rockabilly hybrids with ace session players and projecting an archetype of the sensitive, reticent young adult with his accomplished vocals. He also played a somewhat underestimated role in rock & roll's absorption into mainstream America -- how bad could rock be if it was featured on one of America's favorite family situation comedies on a weekly basis?
    Nelson entered professional entertainment before his tenth birthday, when he appeared with father Ozzie, mother Harriet, and brother David on a radio comedy series based around the family. By the early '50s, the series was on television, and Ricky grew into a teenager in public. He was just the right age to have his life turned around by rock & roll in 1956 and started his recording career the following year recording a cover of Fats Domino's "I'm Walkin'" that went to number four. So far the script was adhering to the Pat Boone teen idol prototype -- a whitewash of an R&B hit stealing the thunder from the pop audience, sung by a young, good-looking fella with barely any musical experience to speak of. What happened next was easy to predict commercially but surprisingly satisfying musically as well.
    Nelson was a fairly hip kid who preferred the rockabilly of Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley to the fodder dished out for teen idols, and over the next five years he would offer his own brand of rockabilly music, one with some smooth Hollywood production touches and occasional pure pop ballads. Nelson recruited one of the greatest early rock guitarists, James Burton, to supply authentic licks (another great guitarist, Joe Maphis, played on some early sides). Some of his best and toughest songs ("Believe What You Say," "It's Late") were written by Johnny and/or Dorsey Burnette, who had previously been in one of the best rockabilly combos, the Johnny Burnette Rock 'n Roll Trio. Ricky could rock pretty hard when he wanted to, as on "Be-Bop Baby" and "Stood Up," though in a polished fashion that wasn't quite as wild and threatening as rockabilly's Southern originators. Nelson really hit his stride, though, with mid-tempo numbers and ballads that provided a more secure niche for his calm vocals and narrow range. From 1957 to 1962, he was about the highest-selling singer in the U.S. except for Elvis, making the Top 40 about 30 times. "Poor Little Fool" and "Lonesome Town" (1958) were early indications of his ballad style; in the early '60s, "Travelin' Man," "Young World," "Teen Age Idol," and other hits pointed to a more countrified, mature style as he honed in on his 21st birthday (by which time he would shorten his billing from "Ricky" to "Rick"). He could still play rockabilly from time to time, the most memorable example being "Hello, Mary Lou" (co-written by Gene Pitney), with its electrifying James Burton solos.
    Nelson was lured away from the Imperial label by a mammoth 20-year contract with Decca in 1963, and for a year or so the hits continued, at a less frenetic pace. Early-1964's "For You," however, would be his last big smash of the '60s. His country-rock outings attracted more critical acclaim than commercial success, until 1972's "Garden Party." A rare self-composed number, based around the frosty reception granted his contemporary material at a rock & roll oldies show, it became his last Top Ten hit. Nelson would continue to record off and on for the next dozen years and toured constantly, yet he was unable to capitalize on his assets. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

    I have to put Elvis and Rick Nelson in the same class, you could just feel the awesome beat and the coolness of their songs. Revolutionary. I was born in 1946. I lived during the early Rock days, and some artists back then just had something extra. Rick Nelson was one who just had it, great star who's life ended too early.

    • @John1948Ten

      tdshaker, I think you're mostly right. Both Elvis and Ricky were instrumental in bringing rockabilly to the mainstream. Elvis sold it to the kids and Ricky sold it to the parents - and to the kids too,

    • @Hallyboodle
      @Hallyboodle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I have to disagree. My dad (rick) was the one responsible for bringing rockabilly/ "rock n roll" to the mainstream. Elvis was absolutely NOT mainstream, he was initially "fringe" and way too racy for mainstream anything. But every week for about 15 years my dad would sing a rock song- supported by great musicians like James Burton, seen in the video posted- Pop was the first artist to be seen and heard at the same time, huge promotion for the music. Grandpa Ozzie was a musician and my dad was allowed to listen to music other kids were not from a very early age, so called "race music", Ray Charles, Big Mama Thornton, fats Domino, etc.To say "Elvis sold it to the kids, Rick sold it to the parents " just isn't true. Trust me, Pop sold it to the kids too. Elvis was just not allowed in polite society, kids were not allowed to buy his records. But my father played Fats Domino's "I'm Walkin" on the show because he wanted to and my Grandpa was producer and writer and took no notice of the network who were very very opposed to this (inciting so much hate mail that they actually had to directly address it, )and Pop talked about Elvis on the show and how great his music was, even dressing as him one Halloween show,and suddenly parents were thinking it was ok for kids to listen to and buy rock n roll. ("if the nice Nelson boy plays it it must be ok.") and radio stations started playing it on regular rotation, balancing all the "crooners" that were the mainstay. We don't realize now with media inundation just how rare and risky this was to do. Don't underestimate the number of kids who would never have been exposed to rock n roll, or Elvis records, without my dad's songs every week. And don't underestimate the number of parents who hated the music Rick Nelson was playing, because it was "rock and roll". I feel very strongly about this. I'm proud that Pop finally threw off the "Teen Idol" thing (a phrase coined for him by Life magazine, btw, which is why he did the song "teenage Idol", which he hated and always thought was supposed to be taken ironically,) and wrote and sang his own stuff in the 70's.

    • @Hallyboodle

      They were never rivals. They were friends. Elvis gave my dad a " TCB" necklace during " the Vegas years" in the 70s. My dad had no.desire to.play Vegas or any large venue. When Elvis was wearing capes and forgetting lyrics, my dad was playing his new stuff and doing Dylan songs in small clubs. That's what he wanted to do. Don't get me wrong, I love Elvis, he was always nice to my pop and the people at Graceland are great. But a certain point my dad was pretty sick of being compared. Listen to his music from the late 60s, early 70s, the Rudy the 5 th album if you ever want to know what he was really about.

    Tracy, it is amazing that you replied to me. I am just an everyday guy who happened to grow up in the 50's. This was a magical time, and music changed radically. Don't get me wrong, but Elvis was very responsible, in part, for starting the Rock & Roll era. Rick was also, along with many others. For stage presence, coolness and awe, I love Rick Nelson. He made quite an impression on this young kid back then. I saw him in live concert much later in the early 1980's. I will say he still looked so good for his age (45). Tom Cruise had nothing on Rick.

    In 1958 Ricky hired The Jordanaires to sing back up for him and they were with him
    on all of his songs from early 1958 thru 1967. His back up band The James Burton
    Trio is just lipsyncing to The Jordanaires.

    James Burton on Guitar...Ozzie Nelson,the Band Leader,got Ricky the best back up musicians in the business.I am saying that,not as a critisism but as praise to Ozzie!

  • @Jamesdylandean
    @Jamesdylandean 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't care what the critics say, I very much enjoyed his singing. It was smooth, and the words were understandable. I liked the show also. I always felt like Ozzie was the comic relief to the rest of the show's straight man. Also, I never saw a hint of jealousy from his brother David. Whatever they were, they were all quality people. Fun to see James Burton in his early years, too. James reported that Elvis was a faithful viewer of the show, mainly to watch Ricky play.

      @@bancrows165 First, you have 3 N's in the word recommended. you only need one. Nothing to do with America? it's rockabilly being played
      by Americas, a style that originated here in our southern states of America, being played on a classic American TV show, cast with a real authentic American family. even the two guitars, a martin and a fender telecaster are American made. you sound unhappy, i hope you're not in the USA with your miserable attitude.
