  • While amusement parks have been around since the 1550s, rides are not federally regulated. State-regulation only began in 1981. At Six Flags, and most other theme parks, the company spends millions on safety while following international safety standards and other independent examinations. And while rides are becoming faster, taller, and bigger, according to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, ride-injuries are becoming increasingly rare. In 2019, there were .8 injuries per million rides.

    For those of you who are unfamiliar, a block zone is a section of ride that only one train may occupy. At the end of a block zone is a method to stop a train in case the block zone ahead is still occupied. This is the safety system that prevents roller coaster trains from colliding with one another.

    Yes, roller coasters are safe. The chances of dying on a roller coaster or on any ride at an amusement park is 1 in 750 MILLION. Restraint technology is hella advanced these days so there's a lot going on that keeps you secure on rides.
    I went to Islands of Adventure back in May and rode Hulk and VelociCoaster. Restraints felt comfortable and completely secure on both rides. I think it also helps that my fear of inversions ended in 2018 when I rode Rock n Roller Coaster for the first time, so I had no fear going in.
    Please remember, you are more likely to die by the following:
    -Car accident
    -Getting struck by lightning
    -Drowning
    -Shark attack
    -Getting electrocuted
    -Heart attack
    -Seizure
    -Starvation
    -Tripping down stairs
    I know there's a lot more I could've noted, but I listed these examples to prove that amusement rides are 100% safe and the chances of getting injured or dying is extremely rare. Roller coasters are meant to be fun, not to be death traps.

    I worked for a theme park for 5 years helping with spare parts and maintenance. It sucks to think of it in this way, but accidents are bad for business. Theme park companies don’t want these things to happen! That’s why they spend big money on safety. There are safety and maintenance professionals working on these rides every single day to make sure things are operating properly and to intervene when they aren’t. Every ride vehicle has annual preventative maintenance scheduled as well for more thorough testing and tune-ups.
    I can’t say that this applies to smaller companies, especially those that travel. But the big-name parks certainly put a lot of money and work into ensuring you are safe.

To maintain every single piece and part of the roller coaster. Right down to the last Nut and Bolt. And since I used to work there I was able to observe their daily inspection and maintenance routines on the roller coasters. At least back then. And because of how thorough and extensive and safety countries they were. All the rides not just the roller coasters. At Magic Mountain. Were the safest rides on the entire planet. At least at that time. Their maintenance team was the best, I have ever seen of any of the amusement parks that I have ever been to. I just hope that all these years later now and today, they are still just as good if not better than they were all those decades ago when I worked there. That will always be my favorite amusement park. God bless them. Amen.

    Safety gets better all the time just when you think it can't. The restraints on really fast roller coasters are the same mechanism that is used to move the wing flaps on airplanes, and there are TWO per seat, in case one fails.
    Also a cool safety feature I noticed on Joker at SFGA yesterday: they put neon bolt gel on EVERY bolt in every car, so if one of those suckers even THINKS about turning (which is EXTREMELY unlikely, they're torqued on tight and are probably also checked with torque guns frequently), the gel line will be broken and you'll see it with your naked eye. It made me feel extra safe!

    The fact that so many people every yr go on these crazy rides injury free is a testament to the workers, designers, and policies in place. There was a wild west era where the ride came first and everything else came after, including safety (class action park is an excellent documentary on action park that highlights this mentality) but that's not even remotely the norm anymore. Most rides from this era with a bad reputation for people getting hurt or even being rough are typically fixed or are even removed/replaced altogether.

    Roller coasters and other amusement rides are safe enough that I don't believe I am in significant danger from riding them. We do far more dangerous things every day.
    However, they *should* be safer than they are, and I do think more consistent standards and oversight would help. Nobody needs to ride a roller coaster--they exist purely for purposes of fun. Also, since thrill rides are to some degree meant to *simulate* mortal danger, anyone who rides them is to some degree overriding the instincts that usually protect us from danger--there's a high degree of implicit trust being given. Given that, our standards should be extremely high.
    It seemed like there was an unusual rash of accidents in 2021, and it's not hard to imagine that pandemic-induced labor shortages taking a toll on maintenance and ride operations were part of that. But it would be interesting to verify that with actual statistics.

You can die sitting at home on the couch. You can die walking down the street. You can die on the job. Safety is something you can't always control. So you might as well just do something if you enjoy it.

    The statistics are really misleading:
    First ride could be literally any ride at any park/fair with any injury. Fair tides are especially more unsafe. Chain rollercoasters are much safer. Additionally, roller coasters being taller doesn’t inherently make falling from them more of a danger. First, usually safety restraints are increased, but if you do somehow manage to fall off a 100 foot coaster vs a 400 ft coaster, bc of how falling is dangerous regardless, you most likely will die from both. (If that was even likely to happen). This issue is, we’ve been making 100+ ft coasters for years.

    • @darthvader5532
      @darthvader5532 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wrong. The portable rides are far safer than stationary. They get taken apart and put back together by the same people that operate them. That means, the operator knows the ride inside and out, and if something isn't right, the assemble and disassembly process must halt to repair the parts so it CAN be completed. They also get inspected every spot by state inspectors, every day by the ride crews, and they are designed to be stronger to withstand the wear and tear of the traveling season.
      Amusement park rides are inspected twice a year by state inspectors and daily by guys who only know what the ride looks like in its operating position.
      Hope this clears things up.

      @@darthvader5532 my opinion on fair rides comes less from how they are put together and more from how they are run. IE who is running it, how restraints are checked, etc. Much less safety precautions IME.

      @@adellexmiles3155 well, I have been in the business for nearly 3 decades, and I can tell you without hesitation or misunderstanding, all of the injury statistics prove that portable rides are safer than stationary. That high school kid running a ride at cedar point, knows virtually nothing about that ride, that weird little dude at the county fair, knows what his ride should look like, sound like, how its vibrations should feel, what squeaks and clicks indicate something is wrong, can tell you the size and strength of the bolts used, how much power it requires, how its safety systems work, how much the ride weighs........ In effect, they know and understand that ride like no two hour trained kid at an amusement park does.

    • @adellexmiles3155
      @adellexmiles3155 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darthvader5532 Is there like some statistic you have? Bc I have been on two rides (that inverted) in which riders restraints weren’t checked and a ride only could stay in due to centrifugal forces.

    • @darthvader5532
      @darthvader5532 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adellexmiles3155 I would need the name of the rides to be able to assess their restraints. By mentioning they invert, it narrows it down to about 60 ride models. To better explain, I'll give you OUR terminology for ride components.
      1. Tubs = the seating pod
      2. Sweep = the arms of a ride that the tubs are attached to.
      3. Center or hub = the main rotational point.
      4. Axis = any hub that multiple tubs are attached to for rotation.
      5. Spoke = any sweep on a vertical circular frame.
      6. Mud seals = trailer to ground stabalizers or out-riggers.
      Boom = a large (typically 2 sided sweep) that bears tremendous weight. Such as a Zipper, double ferris wheel or a Mach 5.
      If any of these components sound like parts on the rides you rode, use them to describe the rides structure and locomotion and I can pretty much tell you what they were, who builds them, how they function, and all safety features.
      Best place for stats is Ride Accident Database, OABA (outdoor amusement business association) or IAAPA (international association of amusement parks and attractions.) Websites. Just so you know, the most dangerous ride in the industry, is the bench seat style Ferris Wheel. More people have died from seat rocking on those ferris wheels than all other ride models combined, and the number is in double digits. Not to shabby for a model that is ridden by over 12M a year worldwide.

    5:23 The journalism in this is shockingly bad, even in 2022 when this was released, the most expensive coaster was not Everest at $100M, it was Hadgrid's magical motorbike adventure at $300M. Dw CNBC you're only out by a factor of 3, no big deal. Things like this just show the greater systematic problem of relying on single sources and not fact checking.

    The most expensive coaster is not actually expedition everest anymore. Its now Hagrids Magial Creatures Motorbike Adventure, quite the long name, indeed. The price shoots up to around 300 million dollars from the extensive theme, the bike restraints, the 7 launch sections, multiple block zones, a spike, a backwards section, and multiple sections including animatronics.
