Funny that Masamune Shirow actually claimed in an interview 20+ years ago that never have an art class in his whole life when he created dominion tank police (Shirow's first big manga that animated.)
As for Origa, go listen to her non-anime related songs... they are very nice.

The movie "Ghost in the Shell" (1995) by Mamoru Oshii is truly legendary, and the anime series "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" was released seven years later (52 episodes from 2002 to 2004), followed by the movie "S.A.C. Solid State Society" from 2006. The quote below is about the original movie from 1995.
    From wikipedia:
Ghost in the Shell influenced some prominent filmmakers. The Wachowskis, creators of The Matrix and its sequels, showed it to producer Joel Silver, saying, "We wanna do that for real." The Matrix series took several concepts from the film, including the Matrix digital rain, which was inspired by the opening credits of Ghost in the Shell, and the way characters access the Matrix through holes in the back of their necks. Other parallels have been drawn to James Cameron's Avatar, Steven Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Jonathan Mostow's Surrogates. James Cameron cited Ghost in the Shell as a source of inspiration, citing it as an influence on Avatar.
Bungie's 2001 third-person action game Oni draws substantial inspiration from Ghost in the Shell's setting and characters. Ghost in the Shell also influenced video games such as the Metal Gear Solid series, Deus Ex, and Cyberpunk 2077.

GITS:SAC is an absolutely amazing anime. Both seasons. For different reasons, but wow. Absolutely primer quality 2000s Anime, from the time riiiight before type-b moe-blobs became pervasive enough to change the face of anime completely into the dismal isekai/harem schlock that we have had for over a decade and a half.

      Ghost in the Shell franchise:
      -----------
      Ghost in the Shell (manga)
      -----------
Ghost in the Shell (anime movie/film, there's now numerous/many older and newer versions of it)
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (anime movie/film)
      ----------
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (anime, season 1) // "GitS: SAC"
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig (anime, season 2) // "GitS: SAC"
      -----------
prequel single episodes/OVAs for the 2 seasons of GitS: SAC:
The Laughing Man (prequel episode/OVA for season 1)
      Individual 11 (prequel episode/OVA for season 2)
      ------------
Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society (was only a single movie/film/OVA/episode, and not a third/new season of GitS: SAC, as it failed badly to restart GitS)
      -------------
Another Ghost in the Shell restart was attempted, with much more success (compared to the flop of Solid State Society) for what it was:
Ghost in the Shell: Arise // (4 part anime OVAs/movie/films, see below)
      Ghost_in_the_Shell: Border 1: Ghost Pain
      Ghost_in_the_Shell: Border 2: Ghost Whispers
      Ghost_in_the_Shell: Border 3: Ghost Tears
Ghost_in_the_Shell: Border 4: Ghost Stands Alone
      ------------
and the newest restart of Ghost in the Shell, using 3d cgi, and it's not bad for what it is, but it's still not GitS: SAC, but it's still a decent anime series:
Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 (anime series)
Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 (a very condensed anime movie/film/OVA of the anime series, no idea why it was made, lol, just watch the anime series of it)
      ----------
      GitS gaming/games:
Ghost in the Shell (PS1), it's a really neat "3rd person shooter" type of game, as you're using the tachikoma, the spider tank, and so you can move along walls/ceilings, which makes it interesting, but the game is quite hard, as you got to race (time limit) through the level, with various objectives to do
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (PS2) (2004)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Domain of the Hunters (PS2) (2005)
Ghost in the Shell: First Assault Online (free to play online first person shooter game)
      ----------
      hollywood (live-actor) movie:
Ghost in the Shell (with scarlet johanson) // extremely krappy, badly mixing merely some elements from the manga and the anime movie/film, and some from Stand Alone Complex

@redmoonbloodmoon3161 the Scarlett Johansen film is fine and was approved of by the creator.
People attack it purely for being "Hollywood" version. But it isn't.
It doesn't even fell or look like a Hollywood movie.
Frankly, it looks like a well done live action anime.
Now, does it hold up to the standards of Ghost In The Shell?
I say it depends. Most of the stuff we know and it pulls from? No.
The later stuff 2045 and the 3D crap? Yes, and is frankly far better.
Is it essential? No. But is an interesting asside as to how to bring an anime to live action in the west. Same for Battle Angel Alita.

If cyberpunk is your thing, there are a quite few anime that’s been made for that. I’ll list some that I like.
Ghost in the Shell (1995), Akira (1988), Bubblegum Crisis (1987), Cyber City Oedo 808 (1990), and Gunnm (1993). I’m sure there are other great series but these are the ones I’ve watched.

Ghost in the Shell SAC is absolutely peak science fiction that holds up very well to this day. The opening and endings are unskippable. It heavily influenced all other cyberpunk including the Matrix. Macross has a cool premise, but tbh I also have no idea whats going on in its later incarnations, its on a list to check out though
Attempt 21 Day 27 recommending the Dot Hack Sign openings and endings. The show itself is less popular, but the music from the opening occupies a similar mind-bending space to the SAC one with heavy nostalgia of the mid-2000's for many. Also the show laid a lot of the themes that SAO later rode to much greater fame with a more action-packed story.

The thumbnail for Ghost in the Shell was from the original movie in 1995 so it kind of got my hopes up (the GITS series OP's are awesome too). I would love to see you react to both Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex series series and the original 1995 Ghost in the Shell movie. The movie is only has an 83 minute runtime so it wouldn't be too long of a reaction. Just keep in mind the two seasons of Stand Alone Complex and the movie use the same characters, same location, and similar themes, but either can be watched without the other as they are isolated stories (what happens in the movie doesn't happen in the series and vice versa).

    Gestalt robot anime? -
Go Nagai's Mazinger or Getter Robot - From Mazinger Z (Tranzor Z in the U.S.) (1972) to Mazinger Z: Infinity (2017), From Getter Robo (1974) to Getter Robo Arc (2021)
Voltron (Beastking Golion) - two seasons Lion Force Voltron (1984) to 8 sessions of Voltron: Legendary Defender (2016-1018)
Sunrise's Brave Series - which goes from Brave Exkaiser (1990) to Brave Universe Sworgrader (2023).
Ghost in the Shell (1995) is the OG Cyberpunk.
It along with AKIRA introduced anime to the West.
The original 1995 adult animated neo-noir cyberpunk thriller film[8][9] directed by Mamoru Oshii and adapted by frequent Oshii collaborator Kazunori Itō. The film is based on the manga of the same name by Masamune Shirow. It's about spies, robots, cyborgs, and philosophy.
I found the 2004 film Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence a little boring. Down to basics, it's about stopping a crime organization selling bioroid sex toys that have children's memories implanted in them. (I am serious).
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2002) is a Japanese anime television series produced by Production I.G and a second session called Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG (2004),The series centers on the members of an elite law enforcement unit known as Public Security Section 9 as they investigate cybercrime and terrorism cases; the cases in the first season often are connected to their pursuit of an elite "Super Class A" hacker and corporate terrorist known only as "The Laughing Man". I have the both sessions, the film Solid State Society (2006), and the Tachikoma CD "be Human"
Ghost in the Shell: Arise, also known in Japan as Mobile Armored Riot Police: Arise (Japanese: 攻殻機動隊 ARISE, Hepburn: Kōkaku Kidōtai Araizu), is an original video animation and television series that serves as a re-imagining of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell.
    MACROSS is complicated
Macross (マクロス) is a Japanese science fiction mecha anime media franchise/media mix,
Super Dimension Fortress Macross - Flash Back 2012 - Macross II - Macross Plus - Macross 7 Macross FB 7 - Macross Zero - Macross Frontier (albums) - Macross The Ride - Macross Delta
    - The Reason there are space planes and pop stars is because Super Dimension Fortress Macross - Original work adapted by Harmony Gold to become Robotech: The Macross Saga in 1984 (along with two other anime series that were forced to become sequels).
An extraterrestrial spaceship called Macross crashes on Earth and humanity reverse engineers the technology to reach the stars. Extraterrestrials called the Zentradi attack wanting the ship Macross and attack, only for the ship to space fold to Pluto. They accidentally taking two naval ships and part of the island with them, the former become the arms of Macross' mecha form and the latter results in thousands of people being trapped on the Macross. In the end, it's human music that allows the Zentradi to understand there is something more than war. (the film version was called "Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?"
By the time you get into Macross Plus and Macross Frontier (my favorites), you get Zentradi GRANDCHILDREN. Macross Frontier has music able to reach the hearts of a hive of space folding extraterrestrial insects!

This guy is a walking sci-fi anime encyclopedia! Couldn't have said it better myself, friend! I know a bit about the old Beast King GoLion and the sequel series, because well I grew up on Voltron. Wasn't till much, much later when I properly discovered anime and even later than that when I found the original GoLion series DVD set and realized how much the American producers of Voltron changed (and fucked it all up). 22:36 Maybe the newer Macross series have more of a magical girl element but the original Macross was not about that. It was a dramatic space opera that happened to have one Idol singer. It’s one of the most influential series in mecha genre along with Gundam. On a different note, when you say don’t recommend things you can’t react to, I don’t know if most of us know if a series we are recommending would be heavily copyright claimed or not since many of us don’t do TH-cam reactions. I know I recommended Bubblegum Crisis before (Great series btw) but I have no idea if the copyright will be strict for it.

Every single Macross series has had a musical theme and, with the progress of the franchise, the singing avanced from being a symbolical thing to bring people together to an actual powerset. It started with Macross 7 but the last and newest Macross, Delta, made it a thing from the start of the anime and also more actiony.

just tagging my comments here. Some of Frontier's EDs (like Diamond Crevasse, Northern Cross, Ao no Ether) and insert songs (like Yousei), they are arguably better than the OPs!!
In order of what Luke watched: Macross 7 (1994)[rock band theme], Macross Frontier (2008)[theme: solo popular artiste, upstart artiste and duet] , Macross Delta (2016) [theme: idol group]
Found a few titles from the 70s-80s that may match what Luke's dad watched: Chou Denji Machine Voltes V (1977), Choujin Sentai Baratack (1977), Hyakujuu-Ou GoLion [a.k.a. Voltron] (1981), Chouriki Robo Galatt (1984)
Macross besides the transforming Mecha-Plane is like Music saves and brings peace to the Universe! And yes, there are varous sizes of those transforming Mech-planes: from the fighter plane size to daddy size carriers to grand-daddy size..
15:09 Luke, thats no "happy" song, that's a BATTLE song! rumor has it that japanese fighter pilots play these songs when they go into battle!
Some live concerts recommendation for Macross:
      Megumi Nakajima x May'n - Lion Compilation ver 2.0: OD9l5FVyvio
Macross F 2021 - Nyan Nyan Final Attack Frontier Greatest Medley: sVRue9lgLmE
Macross 7 - Dynamite Explosion Yoshiki Fukuyama & Chie Kajiura Feat. Megumi Nakajima: e1BFshrvfYk
Walküre Final Live 2023 - Last Mission - Ikenai Borderline: Ss_UKI5BBLI
      Diamond Crevasse = May'n - Macross F 2021: QNr0VR5D-7s

[Technically Speaking] There is no such thing as "magic" in the Macross Universe.
Instead, you have "Super Science" (called "De-Culture"), that bridges spacetime & energy with thought & memes.
The "magical girl" aspect of the Idol Singers is rooted in the (ancient) modification of the DNA of [all kinds of] humanity by a precursor race (creating hidden pathways in the basic structure of the brain through adolescence) that certain songs can trigger, directly influencing the mind & spirit (that then can direct the reality alteration posible thanks to the superscience).
-> None of this is ever stated in the series themselves (have to read all the novels).

Macross, has gone through some very, very strange evolutions.
It has even disappointed many people.
The original series is a very good Space Opera, whose story has improved over time, but parts of its animation have not.
(Not the DYRL? movie, Do You Remember Love? which still to this day has beautiful and great animation).
Its mainstays, although they vary a little, would be the transformable airplanes, VF (Variable Fighters), which have three modes of transformation: Fighter, GERWALK and Batroid.
Then there is the classic love triangle between the protagonists, and finally the importance of music as a means of understanding between different space cultures.
This last point has been quite degraded, to the point that the writers of the series have given in to commercial pressures, and have chosen to focus too much on the Idol industry, and so in the openings of Frontier and Delta, there is an abuse of the idols singing, almost bordering on Magical Girls.
As a Macross fan for YEARS now, I hope that with the new installment being animated by Sunrise, we will have something closer to the origins of the franchise. More action, more adult plot and less idols.
This makes Now, about what your father has possibly seen:
The original 1982 SDF Macross TV series was ""bought"" by an American production company in 1984, and after sticking the Macross series, to two other similar transformable mecha productions, the Harmony Gold USA company launched Robotech in 1985.
The other two original series were Southern Cross and MOSPEADA.
There was no continuation between the two series, but with editing, censorship, dubbing and new music, HG invented a kind of generational continuation series, making some of the characters of the second series, the children of the first.
Beyond this change, questionable or not for the time, the general discomfort that followed was that the company claimed rights over the original series, blocking and legally harming the original authors.
That is to say, imagine that you create something that is a success, then someone comes, takes your work, alters it, makes money with that alteration and forbids you, not only to claim the authorship of your work that has taken you so much effort, but also to prevent any continuation of that same work from being blocked in the world.
This led to Macross, that huge and great anime franchise, being confined only to Japan, for legal reasons, despite its enormous success.
In theory, much of this has been solved, since in 2021, the company that created Macross, Big West, and Harmony Gold, will reach a commercial agreement not to block each other.
This has led to the original Macross series, which had never seen the light of day in the West except through piracy, now being distributed.
What's more, it was announced yesterday that Disney+, through Hulu and Star+, has the rights to stream (and only stream) all Macross series and movies on their service this year (all but two are still in legal limbo).
Anyway... still, I'm not sure if your father has seen Robotech.
The other series, more similar to Power Rangers, but animated, is either G-Force: Gatchaman (I don't know what title it would have had in the UK), or Guardian Defender Voltron, which like Robotech, was an "adaptation" of different animated series with the same theme.

Macross is a long running Mecha franchise that started in 1982, with the most recent incarnation being released in 2016
Each incarnation has different protagonists, but all versions share three core themes: LOVE, WAR, and MUSIC
How these themes are incorporated generally depends on whoever the current show-runner is
Thus far there are 4 TV series (which you reacted to), 2 movies, 3 direct to video series (OVAs), and 7 videogames (not counting the crossovers)
Also, the 1980s series was combined with 3 other anime and released in the USA under the name Robotech

Here is the this thing, Macross was dilluted into what it is now due to idol culture, it wasn't intended to be that way when it was first appear, probably, because the first one don't focus intirely on the idol aspect of the show, it focus on the subject of what if humans manage to travel into long space journey, something like star trek but with normal earth civilization, then add with alien encounter, how they gonna deal with it, how are the average non military civilians deal with long space travel as a civilian and not as the military that brought them into space, how the civilians interact with the military and how the aliens deal with the humans, they were all out military style creature met with weird stuff where some of the human will kill them and some totally will flee from them, they see human and their culture for the first time, and that is where the idol kind of got mixed with the space war thing, human just being human where ever they go,
well, the lore kind of tell the story where the human need something to entertain their long boring space journey so they dicide to make a singing competition and start an idol culture in space while they are being chased by aliens,

Ghost in the shell: stand alone complex is about Section 9 a kind of black ops group working for the Japanese government. It's mostly focused on major kusanagi and is about what it means to be human, what counts as human due to most of the characters becoming cyborgs. It could also be classified as a political thriller as well.
Highly reccomended if you like hard scifi and blade runner style settings. Fair warning it is very dialog heavy but the dub is 10/10 and how I would suggest you watch it.

Ghost in the Shell is awesome, watch it.
You got 3 of the Macross Series by the looks
    Macross 7
    Macross Frontier
    Macross Delta
7 came out in 1995, Frontier came out in 2008, and Delta cam out in 2016.
The Macross series, movies and OVAs are typically centred around different parts of the same universe. The first Macross(the big robot in each series) was basically an accidental creation born out of necessity, however after that they built a few and created a exploration/colonisation fleet around each of them. Macross 7 is based around the 7th fleet, Macross Frontier is based around the fleet that went with the Macross named Frontier, and Macross Delta is more around a fleet that colonised a planet.
The smaller fighters are typically called Veritech Fighters, or Variable Fighters due to their transformations. they have 3 basic modes, standard Fighter mode, Guardian Mode (basically a plane with legs and arms) and Battloid Mode(fully transformed into a human shape).
And Yes, The Macross (the big robot in each series) is huge, the forearm on each of them is basically an aircraft carrier.

also, now I'm really curious about what anime your dad might be talking about... was it more of a robot show, or more of a human superhero show? because part of me wants to say it might've been Getter Robo. or the plane part makes me think maybe Gatchaman. in general, there are a ton of robot and/or super sentai shows from that era... (super sentai is Japan's costumed superhero genre, but it's very stylistically distinct, like power rangers, ultraman, kamen rider, etc.)
also, if you want to see more of the giant robot/sentai genre in the modern day, I'd say check out the OP/ED for Metallic Rouge and Bang Brave Bang Bravern. one is super sleek, modern, classy, and stylish, while the other is a charmingly over the top send up of classic mecha. and obviously I'd recommend chipping away at anything to do with Gundam... ask the audience for recommendations on the older stuff, but in terms of modern entries, Witch from Mercury had me captivated.

I'm a Japanese man born in 1971. Let me tell you about Macross 😃 (I don't understand NANA 😂
I was 10 years old when ``The Super Dimension Fortress Macross'' began airing in 1982. It was broadcast on Sundays at 2:00 p.m., a time when anime had not been broadcast before, and I was shocked when I saw it for the first time, as VCRs had not yet become commonplace in ordinary households (at least not in my house). I have fond memories of having to stay home on Sunday afternoons when kids were playing 😅
Well, the first fandom in Japan was born in the mid-1970s with Space Battleship Yamato, which excited some young people. This was the first anime boom. The second anime boom that followed was "Mobile Suit Gundam" ('79). Both waves were older than us, so I think our generation is the "Macross generation"😌

Now, this is how "Macross" started, and later two family trees were created. One is of course the ongoing Macross Saga, and the other is the Super Dimension Series. Since others have written about Macross Saga, I would like to briefly touch on the Super Dimension series and ``ROBOTECH'', which was derived from it during the rise of Japanimation.

1st work The Super Dimension Fortress Macross October 1982~June 1983
2nd work Super Dimension Century Orguss July 1983~April 1984
3rd work Super Dimension Knight Southern Cross April 1984~September 1984

Macross is characterized by its unique style, which intersperses the youth culture trends of the time, such as robot anime, science fiction, romantic comedies, and idols.
After the broadcast began, it was decided to extend the series by 13 episodes due to support from fans and good sales of related products, and the originally planned 23 episodes (2 seasons in 6 months) were extended to 36 episodes (3 seasons in 9 months). Furthermore, in 1984, a year after the broadcast ended, the theatrical work ``The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?'' was released and determined its popularity.
Since then, the staff of this work has been involved, and works in the Macross series have been released that inherit the world setting and basic elements.
This was the first attempt to broadcast a new animation on Sundays at 2:00 p.m.
The major difference between this work and ``Yamato'' and ``Gundam'' is that the production staff includes many young staff members who came into the anime industry from SF or animation fans or fandoms.
In addition to professionals, amateur students also participated, and Hiroyuki Yamaga, the first president of GAINAX who later created EVANGELION, made his directorial debut with this work, EVANGELION's general director Hideaki Anno and Masahiro Maeda, and EVANGELION's character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto were the original artists. is in charge of

As a science fiction anime, it deals with the first contact with aliens, and the story of Macross and the citizens being expelled from Earth for inviting aliens to Earth, is similar to "Legendary Giant Ideon". be. On the other hand, there are some points where humans inadvertently make a pre-emptive attack on places that would normally be attacked by aliens, and instead of attacking from Earth, they are suddenly sent far away and then try to return to Earth. Attempts are also being made to break traditional patterns.
It was unusual for a war anime, as it was not uncommon for the main character to not make a sortie or to have any battle scenes throughout the episode. This story avoids the serious depictions of the ``harshness of war'' and ``political drama'' that were common in real robot movies at the time, and instead centers on a romantic drama about the love triangle between the main characters Teru, Minmei, and Misa, which takes place during wartime. It was a conscious production to depict the vitality of civil society. In this line, the keyword "culture" has the meaning of converging the story.
Parallel to the space war outside the Macross ship, a Cinderella story unfolds inside the ship in which Lin Minmei goes from being an ordinary girl to becoming an idol singer. It was a groundbreaking attempt to position the popular songs sung by Minmei as not just songs in the play, but as elements related to the core of the story, and ``songs'' have become an important theme in subsequent Macross series.
Minmei became a pioneering example of a virtual idol that connects anime (fiction) and reality, and Masaharu Kawamori, co-director of the movie version, said, ``If it weren't for Mr. Iijima who gave the voice, Minmei would not have been as good as she was in the story.'' ``I might not have become an idol. That was partly inspired by Iijima-san's rise in popularity.'' Mari Iijima, who auditioned for this work while waiting for her debut, was in charge of voice acting and singing in the play, and made her debut as a singer-songwriter after the end of this work.
      ...That's what I mean 😌

“The Super Dimension Fortress Macross” Synopsis
In 1999 AD, a gigantic object that suddenly came from space and landed on South Atalia Island in the Pacific Ocean was a space battleship with a total length of over 1,200 meters. As a result, human society learned of the existence of aliens and the existence of wars between them, and established a unified earth government to deal with the threat from space. After a global conflict (unification war), the crashed ship is renovated and named ``Macross''.
On the day of the Macross Space Launch Ceremony in 2009, a fleet of an alien faction, the Zentraedi Army, appears near Earth. Macross's main gun system senses their presence and operates on its own, destroying the battleship group. The true identity of Macross is a booby trap set by the Inspection Army, a faction hostile to the Zentraedi, and humanity is forced to become involved in a war with the aliens. In order to escape from the encirclement of the Zentraedi army, Macross attempts to evacuate to the far side of the moon by fold navigation. However, it failed to be controlled and engulfed the entire South Atalia Island area, arriving near Pluto's orbit. Furthermore, the Fold System itself disappears, forcing a long journey back to Earth using only conventional rocket propulsion.

Along the way, the 58,000 residents of South Ataria Island rebuilt a town on board the Macross ship and lived a normal life alongside the war. Acrobatic pilot Teru Ichijo joins the military to protect Lin Minmei, a girl he met during the war, and becomes the pilot of the variable fighter Valkyrie. Minmei becomes a popular idol singer on the ship, and gradually becomes distant from Teru, but at the same time, the presence of her superior, Misa Hayase, with whom she quarrels, gradually grows larger.
Eventually, the true nature of the Zentraedi people gradually becomes clear during the battle. They were a fighting race that had been genetically improved and only knew how to fight, and they feared Earthlings as a "protoculture" race with a "culture." As the Earth attack fleet gradually transforms due to contact with culture, the main Zentraedi fleet appears in order to wipe out both Macross and Earth, and the majority of life on Earth is lost in the all-out attack. However, during the battle with Macross, the Zentraedi Earth Attack Fleet accidentally came into contact with Earth's culture, and as a result, the Zentraedi Earth Attack Fleet, awakened by this, joined forces with the Earthlings, gave the enemy a culture shock with Minmei's song, and took advantage of the opportunity to replace the flagship of the core fleet. He executes the strategy of launching an attack and achieves victory.
After the end of the war, while the reconstruction of the scorched earth continues, some Zentraedi who are unable to adapt to life on Earth cause problems in various places, and dissatisfied elements begin to gather together. Although Teru has become close to Misa, they often see each other, and Minmei, who has been working as a singer in various places but has reached a dead end, begins to have feelings for Teru. Eventually, the Zentraedi forces increased in strength and launched an attack to destroy Macross, the symbol of unity, but this ended in failure due to Macross's counterattack, which surfaced for the first time in about two years. Minmei reunites with Teru and wishes that she would quit her military job and be with him, but the bond between Teru and Misa remains strong, and Minmei begins to live alone with her songs.

So Ghost in the Shell (henceforth referred to as GitS) is a bit of a media behemoth now. It's one of the biggest influences in the idea of Cyberpunk style in nearly all media that followed it.
It has multiple movies, TV series, video games, and comics/manga. Some are connected, most are not.
It started with the GitS manga in 1989
In 1995 we got the first movie, also just titled GitS, and it's a rather faithful adaption of the original manga, albeit not all of it.
In 2004 we got a direct sequel to that movie, GitS 2: Innocence
In 2002, we got the first animated series, GitS: Stand Alone Complex, which is where that first opening song is from. It is an alternate adaption of the characters and story, not directly related to the original movie
After that we got GitS SAC 2nd Gig, which is the second season of the first anime, where the 2nd opening comes from.
We also got a movie and a few OVAs set in the same timeline as the SAC show
Later on we also got GitS Arise, a set of movie length OVAs, and Arise Alternative Architecture, both alternate takes on the characters and themes, not directly related to either SAC or the original Movie
And after that we got GitS SAC_2045 (which I haven't actually watched yet myself!) which as the name implies, is in the same continuity as the earlier SAC anime.
And yes, there was a live action adaption starring ScarJo. Unfortunately the writing for that movie was kind of shit. Casting, graphics, cinematography, all done brilliantly, but let down by writers who just didn't get it.
Personally I'd recommend watching the First Movie, though that would have to be Patreon Exclusive because of booba. The second movie, Innocence, is good, but not as good as the original, or as good as some of the follow up animes.
Then absolutely watch GitS SAC and GitS SAC 2nd Gig, as they're both fantastic.
Arise I wasn't a huge fan of, something about it just rubbed me the wrong way. It's not bad, but it felt off.
And I haven't watched SAC_2045 yet, as previously mentioned.

If you want weird and cyberpunk, you should watch Serial Experiments Lain. Also, what your dad describes, describes tons of robot anime from the 70s. But Raideen may fit the bill with the name he mentions.
Also, Macross is... long. Each series also features a love triangle between MCs.
Macross: The first series is about the titular Macross ship, built on earth from the remains of an alien battle cruiser, and the fallout from that, and how Earth's culture stops the Space War. The MCs are a rookie ace pilot, a bridge officer, and an aspiring idol. It's her song that stops the war, which is why songs are a huge deal in the series.
Macross Plus: A 4-episode OVA or a movie, focused on two test pilots and their childhood friend who is the manager for an AI idol. The series focuses around the pilots' rivalry, their past, and issues with the AI.
Macross 7: Focuses on a band, Fire Bomber, who live on the 7th Long-Distance Colonization Fleet. It introduces the concept of 'song energy' as a specific type of energy source (it's more explained in further series), and the fleet's conflict with what amount to basically space demons.
Macross Zero: A prequel that focuses on a two pilots and a native girl on a mysterious island, and how the island is tied into the aliens that are coming to earth while UN and anti-UN forces are finishing up a world war. There's more, but that's probably the most succinct explanation I can give
Macross Frontier: Takes place on another colonization fleet, with the MCs being a galactic idol, a genki girl who wants to be an idol, and a pilot trainee who is the heir to a storied Kabuki house. It deals with their conflict, and the fleet's conflict with basically giant space insects and inter-fleet politics.
Macross Delta: Foscues on a colonized world in the Brisngr cluster, and a private military company that lives there. The main characters are split between an idol group who double as a military unit because of their song energy, and an aspiring idol from a specific planet, a freeter who gets dratfed into piloting, and a pilot in the PMC. It focuses on the conflict between two neighboring planets and interstellar politics. The magical girl part of it is the singers using hard light holograms to transform into costume, since they function both as military support and inspiration to people whose cities and planets are being attacked (plus they need the costumes for actual concerts).
But with all Macross series, the conflicts are multi-layered and dense, as they bounce from love triangle (which is the show's main focus, I believe even the directors said it) to war (and why war is bad). Overall they're all worth a watch.
Macross also has an in-universe movie, Do You Remember Love? which retells the main series story, and Macross Frontier and Delta also have sets of movies (but not in-universe movies) that retell their stories (and for Delta, a sequel movie) as well. Later series seem to run with mixed-events from both the series and movies. There's also tons of tie in manga, video games, and other media.

The first Ghost in the Shell movie and Stand Alone Complex (including 2nd gig) are amazing and by far the best Ghost in the Shell media; highly recommend. The 1995 movie was a landmark for anime in the west as being a legitimate art form for adults. The soundtrack and animation are incredible to this day but the profound writing is what makes it a masterpiece. The original manga they are based on by Masamune Shiro and their other works were a big influence on the whole cyberpunk genre. The original GitS manga is very different and none of these are a direct adaptation but taking their own spin on things. The characters and world are mostly the same but that's about it and the tone is very different. The manga likes to explain all of the tech and has jokes so it's more lighthearted. The manga also has some explicit scenes meaning some versions of it are censored. The movies and Stand Alone Complex share their own continuity. I would recommend skipping the Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence movie and going from the first movie to Stand Alone Complex after.

what your dad watched is called "robotech" and yes, it's actually part of macros... when robotech was launched in the west it was 3 seperate yet similar anime spliced together and redubbed in english for american/english audiences with a new script, just using the visuals from the 3 different anime; (the three anime it was patched together from were, Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA); so yes, Robotech was in part, part of macross, and your father will find the original macross series really familiar as a lot of it was used as the core of "robotech"

Also too, Macross anime's are pretty good. They are all very loosely connected but every show and movie/OVA is it's own thing. Music is at it's core and a key component of the story in every Macross. I believe the last one that got released was Macross Delta and and that one has a more magical girl vibe to it.
Macross is scifi with pretty good mecha/spaceship fights (the ships turn into mechs) and it's about civilization, politics and war in space and how music is the one thing connecting us all together, regardless of who you are (or what since they are different species of folks in Macross).
Every show and movie has it's own charm and I highly recommend you google search when each came out and enjoy a marathon of Macross for a bit.

The only old Macross opening you listened to was from Macross 7, which was from the mid-90s. that one was with the guy singing. Macross has music as a very important element, along with the space battles. They aren't magical girls, but idol singers. Every Macross series is about the idol singers and space battles.

The OG movies that came out before it are fantastic too. The voice acting is fantastic in English or Japanese and I will happily watch the whole series either way. Absolutely you should have it in your watch list.
The intros are sung by the late Origa, who had an absolute banger voice and was a polyglot, too!
EDIT: The Macross intros popped something into my head: There's a short animation on TH-cam someone made called Crimson Alpine that you would probably get a kick out of. I don't think it's long enough to make a full reaction about, but if you ever do a bunch of short animation reactions, it would be good for that probably.

Music has always been central to the Macross franchise. Every entry in the series has featured music prominently as a plot point.
In the original series, humanity was plunged into a conflict with an alien species whose only purpose was war and had lost the ability to feel anything. The humans discovered that exposing the alien soldiers to "Culture" (art, music, sentiment, relationships, affection, etc.), they could no longer handle the emotions that had laid dormant within their species for so long and gradually lost the will to fight. This created a schism within the aliens where most of them wanted to quit and join humanity in peace, while the extremists escalated the war to purge their race of the "corrupting influence of Culture".
The main theme of Macross was that war cannot be stopped by violence, because someone will always be building a bigger bomb; instead, is can only be stopped through empathy and understanding through the expression of our emotions. Music was the biggest vehicle for this message in the story, and every Macross has since featured musicians and artists performing alongside fighting soldiers, but that music was the deciding factor in overcoming the schemes of the villains.
The big shift came around the time of Macross Frontier, where instead of music being the solution to conflict it weaponized instead, using it to bolster or impede allies and enemies through some manner of technology-based psychological warfare. Some of the original theming persists, but "song as weapon" is so prevalent that it has become the defining feature of newer entries in the series.
If you care to check out an entry in the series that perfectly balances the two, try Macross Plus. It was released as both a 4-episode OVA and a shorter theatrical film, bridging the gap between the original show and its sequel series, Macross 7. Its got a lot of interpersonal drama, gorgeous hand-drawn action, a theme of the value of human ingenuity versus the proliferation of AI, and an absolutely beautiful soundtrack that stands out to this very day.

Macross was suppose to be a romance focus mech story, that has a love triangle. One of the heroine is a singer, and her song played a major part in the story. That line of meta continued till they now just make it a mech anime with pop idol.

Oh boy, Yoko Kanno! Yeah, GiTS opening has Russian, Latin, English, Japanese in the same song. She once asked if anyone else wrote songs and then translated the lyrics in her head into actual, real, other-people languages. And never make my mistake and try to sing 'Inner Universe' karaoke. GiTS is anime-Cyberpunk anti-terrorists org with a lot of questions about existence (especially the movie that was dubiously remade with Scarlet Johansen).
See if your dad watched the original 'Gatchaman' or the english make-it-star-warsy version, 'Battle of the Planets.' Bird-ninjas with vehicles and space plane. Voiced by Casey Kasem! And not Gatchaman Crowds, that's a remake that's quite, quite different.
Best Macross top-dipping would be the Macross Plus movie. Test pilots compete in a competition for the next-gen fighter. They have an unresolved childhood love triangle which makes it personal.
Macross, it's all just love triangles, songs and big mecha fights in a blender. Each series draws from the mix differently.
    - OG Macross is earth vs aliens. Very into mecha, the love triangle and then some idol singing. It's old - 1985, and while the drama is top notch it's got lots of old anime weirdness. By weirdness I mean plot holes and sexism.
    - Plus is the test pilots. Mecha, love triangle, Idol singer. Yoko Kanno did this music too! only availabe as 4 direct-to-video episodes (OVA) or a 2-hour movie version.
    - Seven's colony fleet runs into trouble in the unexplored space. A band out front and one of the most polarizing leads in anime (he's a hardcore pacifist in a mecha show). It's long and takes a while to get going. I started and stopped watching several times before I sat through it all and got what they went for.
    - Frontier's also a colony fleet that runs into aliens. My personal favorite, the love triangle quite strong, the aliens are threatening. That weird Frontier opening is a one-off so they could finish the 2nd (real) opening. And those are steamed buns, not ... not-buns. Yoko Kanno (GiTS, and Plus) also did the music for Frontier, Now I want to go watch the finale's Nyan-Nyan Service Medley again....
    - Delta is, I guess in a word, a civil war. Much more into the idol singers with holographic outfits, jet propulsion, force field projectors so... magical girlish? Idol singers spec op force, with their pilot bodyguards. It's weird. 2nd most controversial series.
...I forgot Macross 2 existed. Sorry, but in my defense so did the creator.
New Anime Op recommendations! Let's go back for more old anime! Space Battleship Yamato, from the 1974! Actually didn't do well when first aired, it became so poular ona re-airing years later the Op was sung in schoolyard all over Japan. Bit of a super robot genre feel but the super-mecha is a spaceship.

The Lion team comes from "Beast King Go-Lion", and the Vehicle team comes from "Dairugger XV". Also I don't know if anyone's told you about Macross' plot (in all the series). But it's literally about fighting aliens with the power of J-Pop. I am not kidding. The aliens have never heard music before, and because of plot reasons, it becomes humanity's best weapon against them. Also there are spaceships which transform into mechs for battle. If you wanna check it out I recommend the 1984 movie "Do you Remember Love?" to start with since it gets referenced in almost every Macross series after it. The 1984 movie is a condensed and better realised version of the original 1982 tv series. It's also one of the greatest animated anime films you'll ever see in your life.

I'm assuming your dad watched Voltron. I haven't seen it but it seems to be a show about a big robot that is created when 5 people in vehicles merge together. Voltron was created by Japan, but something that is very common back in the 80s, It was a rebranding of an anime in Japan called Beast King Go-Lion and for the second series, Armored Fleet Dairugger XV.
American localizers would take previously existing unrelated series and rebrand it into something more friendly to the local environment, especially to profit off of the Toy model craze (transformers)
This was done to Macross and 2 other series (Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, Genesis Climber MOSPEADA) that was turned into a show called Robotech.

The three best anime for combined epic music and battle sequences: Bubblegum Crisis (original series), Macross Frontier, and Symphogear. Macross Frontier has lots of epic live action concerts that are well worth watching.

Almost definitely your dad watched Voltron. I grew up on that show. it started with giant mech lions forming a robot. the later seasons switched them to vehicles (most likely because transformers was popular by then).
The only newer Macross series I watched all the way through was Macross 7, as it was treated more like a music shill and the music banged. I watched Robotech and the original Macross movie way back when they came out. "Space Opera" is the best way to describe them. Worth the time it takes to watch, if you can get over the bias of a hand-animated TV series.
GITS (ghost in the shell) has a long history in the cyberpunk genre. It hurt me hearing you compare it to Edgerunners. It was the main inspiration for The Matrix and spawned dozens of near-futuristic cyberpunk-adjacent movies in Hollywood. James Cameron, a ravenous cyberpunk anime fan, dropped the ball when he gave up the rights to GITS and Battle Angel Alita for someone else to film. His movies would have been legendary.

Still sits comfortably in my top 5, two decades later, and the openings are still incredible.

In my opinion, "ghost in the shell" is good because to understand whether you like it or not, you do not need to catch the first few episodes of the series, which do not always give a clear picture, but you can immediately watch a high-quality full-length anime.

Ghost in the Shell is the history of a group of veteran cyborg soldiers of World War 3, a detective cop, and a sly old politician forming an anti-terrorist and anti-hacker squad that kicks ass. There´s also a prequel that is called "Ghost in the Shell: Arise". And ignore the movie. Not only they mixed the best 3 villains of the anime in one character, the makers don´t know that the writer is not afraid of the era of cyborgs, but someone that would become a cyborg himself right away if tech was already there, and wrote the good and bads he sees of said future in the history.

To clarify, you mean the American movie. The first full length animated GitS film from '95 is even more famous than the show that was based on it.
The Hollywood film indeed got a lot wrong and forced in a bunch of aggressive, short-sighted paranoid anti-intellectual clichés, but what do you expect. Some folks could still enjoy it apparently.

@@whade62000 Movie was based on the manga, and the last episode of s2 of the show mimics the first pages of the manga, making it a point that the show happens before both. But agreed.

Ghost In The Shell is widely considered THE cyberpunk anime. The movie you referenced is actually a live action re-make of the original movie.
The OPs are both up there amongst my absolute favorite OPs, alongside Re:Creators.
As far as Macross goes, I think it gets pretty underrated because it had to constantly compete against the ever growing Gundam series at the same time. Personally, I followed and loved both Gundam and Macross over the years.
Dang, these are classics. Kudos to you for checking them out.

Note the first opening was from either the 80s or 90s if I'm right while Macross Frontier (the openings with the short green haired girl, pink haired girl, and blue haired guy with the ponytail) was from the mid to late 2000s if I'm right and Marcoss Delta was the last of the 3 (think in the 2010s).
As for the Ghost in the Shell opening it looks like a game cause they used CG to make it rather than going the more hand drawn like route most anime go with, the anime itself doesn't use the CG look though and looks like the 2nd Ghost in the Shell opening.
I personally was never really able to get into either of them though so can't say how good or bad they are (saw some random episodes of Ghost in the shell on Cartoon Network's adult swim when I was a teenager, as for Macross only one I watched 5+ episodes of was Macross Frontier).

There are 3 things in macross, first the mechas were build cause when humanity first dicovered the alien culture from the first macross ship that landed on earth they found out they were from a race of bif size, so they build them in case they had to face them in war. Second, humanity had no way to face them so the only way they survived was through the music culture, the zentraedi fell in love with the idol from macross city and went to face their own leader when they rediscovered that both humans and zentras came from the same origin. Third, the main technology from the macross ships "fold" that lets them do the faster than light travel is pretty much a wave technology and able to be manipulated by music, thats why music is so important in the macross universe.

The only thing that I know of that's old enough for your dad to have seen it would be _Ronin Warriors,_ which we got in the US it the 90s/very early 00s; but I'd pretty sure it's from the 80s. Unless it was literally Gundam or Voltron.

GiTS: Stand Alone Complex and 2nd Gig were sequels to the original series. There are other opening sequences, but those are for _movies,_ The original GiTS (1995), aka "The Making of a Cyborg", GiTS2: Innocence, and the live-action/CGI version of 2017 that replicated the "Making..." sequence with remarkable fidelity.

You are right. Macross series is a combination of Top Gun, idol singers and space opera. In original Macross the VF-1 are patterned after F-14s so the Top Gun reference is there. Also there was only 1 singer. The songs are important to the lore. Singing was a "weapon" against the giant aliens, so you have singers and fighter pilots involved. :-) Macross 7 had a band led by Space John Lenon. Frontier had dueling idol singers. Delta they brought in an entire Idol group. You skipped Macross Plus (Idol singing Artificial Intelligence) and Macross Zero (Tribal Singer), those two were OVA rather than TV series so they don't really have openings/endings but the I think they are the best in the series. Look up Macross Plus "Information High" it's in English.
Oh, if you want to get a feel of how it all started, look for Macross - Do You Remember Love.

Fun fact, the first season of Macross was dubbed into English and re-named "Robotech"
They also spliced in footage from the anime Southern Cross and MOSPEADA, to add more run time.
This was a common practice in the USA at the time during the 1970s and 1980s when adapting anime from Japan.
Other examples include "Voltron" which used spliced footage from Beast King GoLion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV
Science Ninja Team Gatchaman got re-named into "Battle of the Planets" and was later re-edited into "G-Force"
a later sequel to Gatchaman was released in the USA under the name "Eagle Riders"
The anime Bismark got re-named and re-edited into "Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs"
Space Battleship Yamato became "Star Blazers" when brought over to the USA, etc.
The oldest example would be the 1960s anime Tetsujin 28-go, which got turned into "Gigantor" when aired in the USA

I grew up in the 80's and 90's. I remember Voltron, Speed Racer, and Robotech from back then, though they weren't advertised as Japanese animation back then. Your dad may be thinking of Robotech. The English producers of Robotech took Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA and mashed them together to make a new story.

If the Dad was remembering something similar to power rangers, I would lean more towards Voltron over Robotech. Robotech didn't have a power ranger style to it.
