    There's not enough theory analysis of contemporary black music on youtube. Really appreciate this.

    love these tutorials brother. can you comment on singing these songs? when you begin singing it is almost quieter than your speaking voice. is it a very light vocal tone/placement you are using? your voice is killing

    • @karlismusik
      @karlismusik  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much. I usually start a song quieter than the rest of the song especially D’Angelo. Definitely a light tone with the vocal approach since D is such a smooth crooner. Belting would take away from that

    @KarlisMusik: Do you have any recommendations on how to learn keyboard to play gospel/rnb songs as sheet music? I'm learning how to play the keyboard with your tutorials, but I'm now wondering how to learn it in a way that I also can read notes...
    Btw: I cannot thank you enough for this awesome tutorial! I tried to imitate these chords and voicings on the guitar for years, but it'll just never sound like the piano! Cheers from Germany

    • @karlismusik
      @karlismusik  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shouts out to Germany!!!!!!!! Ok thats a very good question. I learned to play by ear so I do not have lots of experience with reading. I will say gospel is a music that is played by feel and not so much a sight reading kind of thing and of course thats my opinion. I would suggest finding some gospel tutorials and just learn the songs without thinking about notes, just get the feel. Then when you get a few down you should connect the theory. Gospel and RnB do intersect in ways but at the same time are very different in mode. Again these are my opinions and i hope it helps.

    On those passing chords (I think FM7’s?) in the hook/chorus I can’t figure out what the other voicings are on the record. Sounds like different keys instruments playing panned to left and right sides, they do these decorative voicings that are just so tasty but kinda tucked back and hard to pull out thus far. You play a fairly straight version of the hook here - super helpful man thanks! - you don’t happen to know the names of the voicings on the other keys instruments do you, for the passing chords in the hook? Gotta sit down with a slow downer and loop those bits to figure em out. Also, any idea what the instruments are in the verses? It sounds like an electric piano or guitar with some crazy wah effect on it. Would love to know how they got that tone!

    • @karlismusik
      @karlismusik  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tape Tape Tape and again I say Tape and outboard gear and analog mixing consoles and genius musicians. But yeah I didn't learn the voicings to all the other instruments but you hit the nail on the head because there are instruments tucked and are very elusive. He does that so well. Thanks for watching!
