Let me share some fascinating history about Tekka Centre in Little India, Singapore.
Tekka Centre, located in Little India
Tekka Centre is a vibrant multi-use building complex that brings together various ethnic communities ,that offers a delightful mix of food, shopping, and cultural experiences.. Here are some interesting details:
    Etymology and History:
The market was originally known as “Kandang Kerbau” (or just “K. K.”), which means “buffalo pens” in Malay. This name referred to the slaughterhouses operating in the area until the 1920s.
In Hokkien, the market was called “Tek Kia Kha,” which translates to “foot of the small bamboos.” This name came from the bamboo plants that once grew along the banks of the Rochor Canal.
The popular name “Tekka Pasar” (笛卡巴刹) emerged, where “pasar” means “market” in Malay.
The original Tekka Market was built in 1915 and was located across the street between
    Hastings Road and Sungei Road.
In 2000, the complex was officially renamed “Tekka Centre” to better reflect its historical significance.
The market underwent significant renovation in 2008 and reopened in 2009.
Little India’s first air-conditioned mall, Tekka Mall, was built on the original market site in 20031.
    Facilities:
Tekka Centre remains a landmark in Little India, where people from different backgrounds come together.
The ground floor houses a hawker centre with stalls serving Indian vegetarian meals (served on banana leaves or stainless steel platters), Chinese vegetarian dishes, North Indian cuisine, and Malay food.
The wet market on the same level offers fresh seafood, including crabs from Sri Lanka, and
    a variety of vegetables.
Shops within Tekka Centre sell traditional Indian costumes, casual clothes, Taoist and Buddhist paraphernalia, hardware items, and provide tailoring services.
The complex truly embodies the multicultural spirit of Singapore, with Chinese stallholders speaking Tamil and vice versa
    Wet Market and Fresh Produce:
Tekka Centre houses Singapore’s largest indoor wet market, built in 1915. It features 284 market stalls where you can find a variety of fresh produce, spices, and ingredients1.
Whether you’re looking for exotic spices, seafood, or halal-slaughtered meat, Tekka Centre’s wet market has you covered.
    Food Stalls:
With 119 food stalls, Tekka Centre is a foodie’s paradise. Here are some must-try options:
Yakader and Allaudin: For delectable Indian cuisine, indulge in biryani or other flavorful dishes.
SJ Tandoori: Savor butter chicken and garlic naan.

Hengi Gi Goose and Duck Rice: Known for rich duck breast and rice.
545 Whampoa Prawn: Tastiest prawn noodles.
Swee Heng Teochew Porridge Rice: Offers amazing combination options.
    Shopping and Culture:
Explore stalls selling traditional Indian costumes, casual clothes, and Buddhist paraphernalia.
Tekka Centre is a great place to find unique souvenirs and immerse yourself in the local culture.
    Location and Accessibility:
Tekka Centre is easily accessible from the Little India MRT Station.
