Do you know why Redcar Central's level crossing is unique in the UK,
to replace a boom gate that repeatedly failed in high wind a solution was needed. The answer was a sliding gate, a solution unique to Redcar Central and a first for the UK.

Sigh. Another station that is a shadow of its former self. When I used it in the 1970s, there were three tracks, one going into the station building and there was a siding which would take one goods van. Between West Dyke Road and Redcar Lane crossings there were sidings, not that I ever saw them being used.
The former station master at Redcar Central was the Scout Master of Saltburn scouts! (extra trivium for good luck)

I have seen a nother railway crossing in Redcar which has a slidegate

@@JohnGraham-ev7ne Only 2 crossings in Redcar, one is barriers and the other is this one which has the sliding gate.
First, only and I hope the last despite its uniqueness. 600m down the line from here is a normal lifting barrier level crossing, so not sure why it wasn't an option here as they must get the same levels of wind. Would have made things simpler to operate and maintain.
I can only assume it has something to do with how the wind is channeled due to the signal box and car park, The other crossings buildings dont crowd around the crossing allowing the wind a little more freedom. Just a guess, thanks for watching
Great, until a car or person gets trapped between the closed gates and cannot escape.
They should pay more attention to the flashing light signals then.
It is no different to a four gate level crossing in that the escape road is always the last bit to close
