As you said, rewind on mac is a 3rd party software. That's very different from it being baked into the OS. I won't be using Recall. I don't want it seeing what I'm doing, financials, family photos, commercially sensitive documents/data, etc..

Right I didn't understand their argument, they're acting like there's some inherent antimicrosoft bias and that the media treats Google and Apple much more fairly. I don't know maybe you could say that about Apple in the western market but certainly not Google. It's amazing how these people turn a trillion dollar company that's just admitted their emissions are going to go up 30% because of these ridiculous AI servers into a victim somehow....

The real question is, why don't we have Windows Central podcasts anymore??? It was the one that I really enjoyed listening to 😂I love Daniel Rubino's commentary. Makes me laugh at times and in sometimes he is so right about regular people 😂

This is only a security problem if someone has access to your machine logged in as you. At that point, you have a lot of problems regardless of whether recall exists or not. I'm going to turn it off because I don't want it using my battery and storage.

when they say the data stays local, they mean the actual image files, etc.. the AI analysis of the data will be uploaded to MS.. e..g. you like looking at pictures of cats.. the screen shot of the cat will be local, but, the meta data that you look at pictures of cats will be uploaded to MS

43:00 this is such a bad line of reasoning, anything can be hidden from the user, so because we cant stop every single bad actor in the tech space we have to buy and support AI indexed embedded hardware to make it easier for them?? anyone can break into your garage so why not leave the car outside, anyone can break your window so why lock the door, anyone can hotwire the car so just leave the keys in it, why not pay the money for a AI driver to sit in the car and drive the car thief where he wants to go???

Right if Google or Apple released something like recall as a system setting, that would have been criticized just like Microsoft. I don't know how these guys are trying to portray Microsoft like it's some upstart company that's getting treated unfairly. And people are already deeply upset and concerned about privacy issues as it relates to Google and Apple. It's not like people aren't concerned about that.

Yeah that truly is a turning point I think when Windows became a real disappointment. That's the same kind of nonsense you get with Twitter and Facebook and Instagram, they're unusable without an account. But the difference is, those are free. Windows you're paying for a license or the license is included with the cost of expensive piece of hardware.

its funny microsoft coming up with solution we havent asked for, but still havent come up with a proper windows native time machine equivalent that doesnt suck like windows backup and file history does, if i throw my mac away and get another mac it is 1 recovery step from being exactly the same as my prior machine.

And you ended up having to admit yourself that the initial criticisms were actually justified and you were dismissing them last week.

I think you're right and I've switched to SolusOS and Recall was a big part of that, but ease up, man. You sound a little strange with the unfunny nicknames for MS products. Just name-drop some distros that are good for Windows users (like ZorinOS) and move on.

    @wartybix5038 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think the defence of "well we don't know what Recall does in the background but how do you really know what anything really does?" is quite weak and only highlights the problems with closed-source software like Windows. Open source software doesn't have this problem because anyone in the world (rather than just MS employees) can inspect its source code, and if there was any nefarious data collection going on or the likes, it would quickly be found out, forked, and changed. Like you mentioned there are ways like with a firewall to get a glimpse of what telemetry might be being sent to Microsoft, but fundamentally you are trusting a large corporation that their programs do what they say they do because there's no real way to find out for yourself. The argument of "we don't know what anything does anyway" is a defeatist attitude that only benefits companies like Microsoft.
This is why the people who do use Linux (myself included) recommend it so fondly, because it's open-source and you have complete control over your own system. It's comforting to know that A: I can read any of the source code for my distribution and B: others already do and can find security flaws promptly before they have a chance to be exploited (like with what happened with the Fedora 41 beta).
I also refuse the argument that Linux is only for a small number of tech-savvy people. Linux *does* have many of the features of a modern OS, but with a much lower performance overhead compared to Windows. An average user can easily do all their tasks without once opening the terminal so long as they're not using distros like Arch. Proton and WINE are also really good at running Windows-only games at almost native performance now. Desktop Linux is only getting better and very rapidly too. Most importantly, Linux respects your time and doesn't nag you with ads for Xbox Game Pass, MS365, OneDrive, App "Suggestions", etc., since its not written by one entity who's sole purpose is to make money from you. You're not forced into creating an online account (that can only be bypassed with a hidden command in the command prompt) that -- as you point out -- may not be useful to many people, just to use your own computer. It also doesn't hold your PC ransom applying a Windows update as it pleases when you just want to quickly reboot. The only feature I find myself duel-booting to Windows for is HDR, but even this is currently being implemented for Linux -- currently in an experimental phase in KDE and coming to GNOME soon.
Anyway it was nice listening to the podcast 😃. It's been almost a decade since I started watching videos with Zac Bowden from WinBeta in 2015.

For me, Linux was just a phase in my life. I was leaning to code and building a second PC, so it was a good time for me to get into it.
But there were just too many tradeoffs, incompatibilities. Not to mention the learning curve, which was real.
I can’t imagine older adults who have become comfortable with what they’re familiar with would ever switch. Switching to Mac is far more likely, and even that feels daunting to many people.

@@nav579 What distro and desktop environment were you using out of interest? I find that GNOME with Fedora or Cinnamon with Mint are fairly straightforward, where everyone in, say, the Chromebook demographic can do all their tasks purely using the GUI. Other things like adding a new repo to install software packaged with your distribution or using IR cameras to sign in like with Windows Hello (Howdy on Linux) do require a bit of tinkering in the terminal. I think there is genuine criticism that not as many features 'just work' out of the box compared to Windows. Nevertheless I don't *personally* think the learning curve of Linux is as steep as lots of people say. Plus there are those desktop environments that mimic the look of Windows or Mac so it won't feel too unfamiliar to people who make the switch.
I wouldn't say that people switching to Mac is more likely either. Bearing in mind Macs are still commodities costing around £1000+ each, and many people only want a computer that costs around £200-£600 to do basic to intermediate tasks. This demographic isn't likely going to suddenly spend a fortune just to avoid using Windows. As well as this, there are the PC gamers who *do* spend a lot of money on their machines, but they're not going to want to switch to Mac either, since not many games support Mac. Mac also doesn't have a way to play Windows games (as far as I'm aware) like Linux has with Valve's Proton.
