  • As far as I can find, no-one has actually made a International Standard Cup of Tea - ISO 3103 or BS 6008 - for the internet before. Lots of people have talked about it, but that's easy. Making one? That requires precision... and some specialist equipment.
You can buy a professional tea tasting set from this Amazon UK affiliate link: amzn.to/2qfbxyr
Thanks to Morag Hickman for letting me borrow her workshop for last-minute filming! She makes beautiful jewellery, like ring-keepers, dragon necklaces and rings that looks like ocean waves: etsy.com/shop/Errant
Update: someone has found an earlier ISO cup of tea on the internet, as part of a German video on tea tasting: • Tea Tasting TeaGschwen...

Tea is perfectly fine for warming up on a cold day.
But since tea is often mostly aromatic anyway, if you don't like drinking it, just buy the cheapest one you like the smell of.
Grab a cup with an insulation level you like, and if your hands ever get cold during the winter months, brew some nice smelling water to hold for a while.

This "Standard Cup of Tea" is used for professional tea tasting, not for personal use. The reason it is brewed so strong is to brew out all the nuances presented in the tea. Whenever someone conducts a professional tea tasting, there are normally a couple tea sets used to compare various teas. This is not at all meant for personal use, but it is great if you want to explore professional tea tasting. The best cup of tea is the one you enjoy the most!

I believe the standard is there so different teas can be compared under identical (or as close as possible) situations. Their chemical components can be measured for toxins or carcinogens, for example. Does your green tea have 30 or 50 mg of caffeine per cup? Brands vary so your band can be compared with other brands by using the standard cup of tea. Use it at home? Nah. Use it in the lab. Yes.

Way late to the party, but I didn't see anyone else mention it, so here's the way tea is made in the southern US:
-Boil about a quart (about 0.95 liters) of water
    -Add about 4 tea bags
-Steep for as long as you feel is right, usually between 15 minutes and a few hours
-add the desired amount of sugar or artificial sweetener to the bottom of a gallon (3.79 liter) pitcher (optional)
    -Pour steeped tea into pitcher
-Mix in fresh water until pitcher is full
    -Refrigerate
-Serve in a glass with ice
Yes, I am aware that this will probably frustrate many of the very few of you who read this, but that's the way it works over here

I love it when one of your random videos is something I already know all about. This standard has been a running joke at my (design engineering) job for a while, there is a 'technical drawing' of a cup of tea, with "must conform to BS 6008" kicking about somewhere.

Same with coffee cupping! Just a way of making the beverage to taste multiple varieties at once and taste the differences while removing as much “skill” required to create the brew as possible. That way any differences can more accurately be ascribed to the tea than to the quality with which someone brewed the tea

    Great video
You're my favourite TH-camr, not because you're playing all the latest games or something, but because your content is educational and because you have a very likeable personality..
But I can't believe you don't like tea. Aaaaand the best way to make it is in a pot and add in the milk afterwards...
Greetings from Germany and keep up the good work.

To be fair nobody likes their favorite youtuber just because they play the latest games. After all, there are more youtubers doing that you could possibly watch. The value doesn't come from the games any more than the value in this video comes from the kettle. Its what they do with and say about the subject matter that counts.

Exactly. I grew up in a tea estate, we use the standard for tea tasting only, and when we taste it we don't actually swallow it since it's brewed for longer than a standard cup of tea (3-4 minutes), and we definitely don't use this method for the cup of tea we drink at home :)

Peng, you might not know this but a British association with tea is fairly recent. Coffee use in Britain is much older. The devastation of a seaborne coffee trade (the main area/island traded with was devastated by a coffee plant bug/ fungus) was the impetus toward finding a new national source of tea. The upper class took in green tea from China, and black tea from Ceylon, amongst other places. It took 40 odd years for its usage to take off. The crown enjoyed a per cup small over ride, which helped in its adoption. The older, more traditional teas were much less easily taxed (as cultivation was local) and therefore not encouraged... Later on this tea trade helped keep Ceylon and china British, of course.

Although the opium trade was a much larger reason to keep China in the British imperial fold.
