This is part of an old engineering system where the streets were designed to be occasionally submerged by the tide, naturally cleaning them of debris. O Brasil é uma nação incrível a depender de seu referencial. Se formos falar de desenvolvimento econômico e tecnológico, de fato deixamos a desejar em comparação com países semelhantes. Mas eu digo, com base na minha experiência de mochileiro, que não existe país que eu conheça com população tão amável, custos razoáveis (tô falando de quem ganha em $, € ou £) e belezas naturais como aqui. Muitos países da África central (para citar um exemplo) se assemelham conosco pelo "calor" do povo, mas infelizmente estão atrasados em questões de políticas públicas, já outros países são inversamente proporcionais a nós, com um povo "frio", aos nossos olhos, mas com um sistema público mais eficiente. O que eu percebi é que não há lugar perfeito no mundo e o que me alegra em ser brasileiro é o poder de ser livre para decidir se quero permanecer aqui ou migrar, fato inimaginável em determinados países.
Brasil tem um potencial turístico incrível. Infelizmente é desperdiçado por incompetência ou falta de vontade, não sei.

Existem outros indicadores nos quais, pra mim, o Brasil não é tão bom, mas pode ser pessoal também. Um que não é pessoal no entanto: seguranca pública. Mas existem outros que mostram que o Brasil pode ser um bom país sim.

In reality the flooding of the streets is a part of the urban design of Paraty, it cleans the streets especially back in the colonial era before sewage and running water. The high tide floods the low parts of the streets

I don't think he bribed him. Bribing is not as common (between ordinary citizens) as you'd think in Brazil, although it can get common when it involves enforcement and organized crime, or when it involves politics. It also happen between ordinary people, of course, but it is not common as in other places in LA, where it is common to bribe even to get basic services. You can really do wonders with a good chat in Brazil, explaining your situation. People tend to be emphatetic and try to help you. By the way Joao talks I'd guess he did just that. It seemed like the employees themselves were feeling bad about not being able to help, but exceptions can be made. I myself in this sort of emergency situations have managed to get help from people just by trying to convince them and explaining my side of things.
Patty really is the Car Alarm. And leaving her in the TUKTUK is Safe after all for her, no windows/door, no problem for her.

Just an idea, you could buy a portable camera and use your phone to keep eyes on Patty when leaving her in the tuk tuk alone. I’m sure she is fine, but it’s more a peace of mind. Your journey is getting better and better. Thank you for sharing with us.

What a wonderful journey! Just a small collaboration. The forests and woods you have been seeing since you arrived in Brazil is not the Amazon and it´s not even a rainforest. This vegetation is called “Mata Atlântica” (Atlantic Forest) and its size today is less than 20% of the original coverage. Leaving from Rio in your “Tuk Tuk” towards north, you gonna spend roughly 10 days to reach the southern parts of the Amazon. If you get stick to the planned itinerary, you´ll see much of the “Cerrado” (Brazilian Savanna) but, unfortunately, never see the Amazon.

Paraty is one of the many cities built by the Portuguese in Brazil, because Brazil was a colony of Portuguese settlers, Portugal built many cities, infrastructures, hospitals, a judicial and political system in Brazil, there are many other cities like Paraty that are in the State of Rio de Janeiro spread across the country

I have dry eyes that flare up once in a while. I use a heat mask (there are several different types). You just heat it up and then put it over your eyes for a few minutes and they help unblock your tear ducts. May help your journey
Paraty is one of my favorite places in Brazil but you need to get out to the islands in a boat to enjoy the water or go to Paraty Mirim for instance

That looks like a huge stye! Sometimes I get them when I don't remove my eyeliner so it's a sort of infection. Something you can put it's some chamomile tea cause it has anti-inflammatory properties and the heat of the teabag helps with the inflammation. Hope it helps!

The ideal is to always use tear drops, and believe me, wash your eyes daily with Jhonson Shampoo, the same one for babies, which doesn't burn their eyes. Paraty is a Unesco world heritage site, those cobblestones are 350 years old and can not be changed. I visited the town once, it is a colonial treasure but not for girls on stilettos.
