Oh, that was fun! Thanks for taking the time, especially for those of us who can't afford to take the full FYJ course. This was a treat! As was the taster course!
"And because I'm focused on [the paint], I'm enjoying the process of learning; nothing bad can happen to me." This is such a powerful and profound statement, it just really struck me this morning. Thank you for this lesson!
I just have to say I love this portrait! I think you captured something quite remarkable, and just watching you, I saw at least 4 portraits come and go that I thought were so cool. Her eye brows and the line work between her eyes that ran down the sides of her nose give her face so much life and expression. Total win!!! That was just so cool to watch, thank you so much!
Very helpful, thanks. I tried a self portrait for assignment 2, and I got very frustrated with myself, lots of negative self talk at first. But in just a few days of the taster course, I’m ready to tackle it again, and again…and again, as an exercise. I can’t thank you enough for this course and your positive teaching style. I remember you talking about how people will know your art is authentically you. It’s so true for many things, and your passion shows through in a way that enables you to teach so effectively….. I have realized that I don’t need it to look like a photograph. I’m looking forward to doing more.
I loved watching your process and watching as this came together, perfection. I appreciate your attitude, humble yet self confident, not sure how you pull it off so elegantly and sincerely. You are truly inspirational.
Absolutely loved it. The video and the result. If I saw that hanging in a gallery I would be totally blown away! Definitely captured the essence of the photo.
I LOVE this! And you didn't even draw the countries first. You just jumped right in! I think it's so much more dynamic that way. Thank you for sharing!
I want to publicly despite not able to afford the FYJ ., I was so grateful to be on your free taster course Loiuse. It was like free food on a journey. It shifted my way of art.
Wow! Never tried a portrait but I’ll give it a go now! Inspiring - incredible how the face shape appeared with just a few brush strokes and there’s your starting point for more. Fantastic!
That was great Louise. Thanks. I'm so glad I've taken the plunge and signed up for FYJ. I felt so much joy just watching your demo and we get to do this on the course. Brilliant!
Watching/Listening to you as you take us on this journey reminds me of my dear friend Michael (who has been dead for some years now so reminders are always appreciated). ❤️ He was a musician and his favorite thing was to have "fun with music" so, while he could and did play garden variety instruments, he often threw things in like 'dust busters' , 'vacuum hoses',etc too even little snippets of my children crying or whinging! No, he never made it big except to those of us who loved him but he always knew joy in his creativity. So thank you 😊 💓 from the bottom of my heart ❤️ 💙 💜 for the videos, and the taster (which for the 2nd year in a row I got pulled away from with illness...maybe next year I'll get to see it through. 3rd time lucky and all that!) Blessed Be and may your course open doors and set hearts alight.
Extraordinary! …and very permission-giving! THANK you, Louise. You’re doing so much for us perpetual learners! This is so much more exciting than working realistically!
I really appreciate this video. I'm learning to draw and have been intimidated even thinking of doing portraits, but I know I just need to jump in and start. Thank you for showing us where you are in your portrait process. Made me feel less intimidated!
Fantastic !!! I love the loose, free way of interpreting an image and conveying more than "just the image". I am learning so much through FYJ taster course and your TH-cam channel. I won't be able to manage the full course due to time constraints, but I'm joining your "tribe". You have a beautiful spirit and speak to the artist me and so many others. Thank you is simply not enough.
actually, now that I have seen the finished portrait---it is DEFINITELY a win...and you CAN see the resemblance to the photo!!! It cannot have been easy for you to have a go at it the way you did in front of the camera---and you still were able to feel some of that freedom as you painted---especially at the beginning! THANK YOU AGAIN for your truth...
Hi Louise. Thank you for posting this. Your taster course plus finding an exciting charcoal artist has put me in a new joyful place. I am doing one loose charcoal portrait after another. I never used charcoal before! I must say that I really liked your portrait when you stopped and chatted midway best. That is the kind of thing I'm striving for.
Thanks Louise. I loved watching you develop the painting & it does stimulate me to paint. Loose & rough but feeling the progress. It’s the ‘feeling’ when painting I like. I must get on & clean my studio so I have space to work. A recent flood meant everything had to be up on tables….. & everything still is.
Love this demo Louise, thanks for sharing it with us. Specially your thought of not aiming to the result but to enjoy the process and the feeling of doing "just that". Big thing and still hard for me to shift from' that thought but I am working on it. Thinking that I matter help me to shift a little at a time. The understanding of I don't care what others think about what I do is easy in my intellect but hard to do. Your demo and saying it every time help me a lot. Thanks again.
Just going to say that I loved this because I tend to be very critical of myself which impedes my progress! My parent's voices harassing me or something and not being good enough! So, thanks for this!
This is brilliant, Louise! I’m not a super fan of portraits, with the exception of abstract portraits, but not great at executing even those!! Your lesson gives me great hope!! Thank you 🙏🏻💪🏼🤓🤍
Wow! Thankyou so much! You are an inspiration! I’ve been wanting to paint abstract faces but I don’t believe I can draw very well But I’m going to give it a go.
Hello Louise❤️❤️🥰❤️❤️. You are a generous teacher! I learn so much by the things you share and the examples you show. I have taken many art classes in my day and you are my favorite teacher. You light a fire to create each time I watch you work or listen to you share. Thank you Louise. I hope to one day take your full Find Your Joy course. You are Full of Talent and Goodness. Thank You Thank You for choosing to share! Just like the verse in the Bible instructs to not put a candle under a bushel basket but to set it out where it can give light unto the whole room- you give so freely of your “light” and talents! You are a Blessing to so many- Especially Me! I feel like you are an old friend. I have folders for you in my email, TH-cam, and Instagram. Love that Louise it just shows that not being precious about accuracy really does work!👍
Yes it really does plus it's so much more fun!

It is a pleasure to watch you paint, to listen to your voice and music. All the best !

I kept thinking it was finished, and then you kept making her more intriguing, giving her more personality. Really cool!
Just an ongoing battle until it got somewhere!

I've started making abstract faces but they end up pretty stiff sometimes. I love this loose approach!
Not a good likeness but I like the energy of it
Thanks so much for that 😀
Any time!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Love the face
I think its a really successful expressionist portrait, much more interesting than realism.
Thank you for your kind words Heather!
Very lovely! May I ask what the blue paper towel is I see alot of artists using it for glazing and rubbing off paint? I need some lol 😍🥰🥰🥰
Scott shop towel
🙏❤️🌺 Very inspiring !; love this process. Very helpful. i love it !!! Are you using charcoal when you draw. ‘ Yes the mind goes on … I know Gabriel … great portraitist ! Lol
I think that was charcoal - it was filmed a year ago so I can't quite remember
I think she (TE) would approve - I could see it was her before I read your caption on your post
Aw thanks Claire x
👍😊🌸🌸
I am sure the sitter would rather this depiction than a photographic interpretation, I know I would rather have something that held emotion
Neat, thanks it was Bob Dylan for a bit
haha - I should have one with that!
lol. it looks vaguely human
