  • For this project I decided to make a Secret Cane Sword from an old rusty crowbar I had laying around.

There were less forging here than i expected and the blade design was far wider/thicker than i would assume from a cane-sword.
Somehow i suspect that you too (Pole Barn) realized this atleast halfway through.
perhaps a "staff-sword" would be a more appropriate thing to do when making a blade from a crowbar?
I've seen others make "Katanas" from crowbars because there's enough material for it, perhaps you could make a medieval sword?
It seems you have the skills to make a proper scabbard, but you might need to make the next one not a complete rectangle, but have it "tapered" on the sides to keep the edge of the blade from contacting the sides and possibly blunting it?

Cool, but if it's not hardened it's just a sword shaped object

The crowbar would be high carbon steel so as long as it isn't overheated it will retain its temper

    ... Oh my!
Ookay, For a start, I'll ignore everyone else's comments since they do little more than give PBP a bad taste.
This is how I perceive it; this isn't bad for an entry level project, there are things I would personally do different, but lets try and be constructive on how we discuss this.
Firstly, PBP is using VERY basic tools compared to other more advanced smiths, so I expect there to be some accuracy issues, much of which will improve as PBP grows in experience and gains more equipment as he progresses.
PBP, my suggestions aren't meant to be offensive, but I hope they offer some constructive advice:
The FIRST thing I would suggest is take your time! Its not a race and rushing through something like this will only result in ruining all your hard work.
I suggest rounding one side of your hammer's head and bevelling out the edges on the flat side to reduce the sharp defects caused with each mis-strike, then try striking a sacrificial piece of wood to get a feel for what is most comfortable, you need to try and find that sweet spot with how you grip the shaft and your swing to get a more constant strike against the material, when you find that sweet spot, you'll have less crescent marks in the material .
Next, I suggest one of two options for getting a thinner blade: Either work and draw it out more so the blade is thinner, or spend a lot of time grinding.
I would strongly suggest using a straight edge throughout the project (free hand marking stuff for what you're trying to do is BAD) and cast your eye down both the spine and edge of the blade when you work, it'll help when looking for defects, twists and warps in your work, all of which can be rectified with a little effort/
Your ginding is commendable for what I would call a beginner, however, you need to take a little more time and care rather than rushing into it since this shows in how the blade is uneven and the edge ...
Lastly, IF you wish for this to be more than a wall ornament, PLEASE temper the blade!
As for the wood work? Like with the metal work, take your time and care, rushing creates mistakes!
To be honest, this is pretty good as an ENTRY level project, it could be done better and if you really want to, you could easily re-machine it to meet your viewers' overly critical standards.

First and foremost best advice you had was taking your time. We’ve all done it me especially I start a project way too soon before I have a clear plan and the necessary supplies. For instance the wood working he could have bought a round oak closet rod split it and saved a lot of time that time costed him more short cuts. The planning aspect with foresight even halfway through would led me to re think sword cane. When he joined the handle I hope it wasn’t just glue and at least had a dowel pin connection. Again time and plan problem

Dude, a little bit of effort could have made your project a lot better. The forging/steel work was barely that. And...you may want to consider using a natural L shaped branch for you handle. Hopefully you learned something from this. A whole lot of what not to do...

It is only the loss in your tools and machines you use, your tools are greater than making such nonsense, you have made a shiny piece of iron and all twisted and entry into a piece of wood that has nothing to do, failure and even failure is absolved to you
