    As a fellow life long crocheter who learned to knit 7 months ago: learn continental knitting asap. It’s a way of holding the yarn that’s waaaaay more like crochet with the yarn on the left hand at all times.
    Also the crochet cast on is my go-to. It’s stretchy, it’s smooth, I can do it lightning speed with more accuracy than any other traditional knit cast on.
    Apply what you know of crochet to knitting construction. Working in the round is way nicer in the beginning since it’s all knit stitches 😅.

      My biggest tip - learn how to unpick very early on. I knew how to knit but I didn't know how to fix mistakes so I would knit for ages, make a mistake, then have to pull the entire thing out and start again, which was very disheartening, so I never went very far with it. Then the internet happened, (yes, I'm old), and a nice lady on TH-cam showed me how to unpick and fix my mistakes and that's when I turned into an actual knitter and can now make anything. So yeah - learn how to fix the mistakes straight away and you will progress quickly!

      @@sq5 ooh, good one! Frogging projects for one dropped stitch is maddening.
      My biggest tip is to start with larger needles and very simple projects. Just get familiar with holding the needles and yarn, and do the most basic "knit" stitch. Also- as with crochet, there is terminology you'll need to become familiar with. I learned so much on TH-cam.

  • @mhaen7539
    @mhaen7539 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    When knitting, there are two basic stitches. Knit and purl. Once you’re comfortable with those, you’re on your way to adding to your stitch list. And if you look at the back side of a knit stitch, it’s a purl stitch. And the back of a purl stitch is a knit stitch.

    Hiya! Long time knitter here!! I love love LOVE seeing folks learn how to knit for the first time ❤❤
    I recommend learning how to purl after doing knit stitches for a whiiile to get the muscle memory!
    Cabling does not take new stitches, just knit stitches and a small cable needle. it makes a fun effect! Id recommend trying it in a bracelet or headband for a first project.
    Knitting is easier on wrists and elbows than crochet because its a different motion, and knitting generally takes half the yarn that crochet does for something of the same size. Making it a relatively cheaper craft. The caveat is its a bit of a slower process than crochet.
    Knit uses a more elastic stitch, ie it bounces back when you stretch it one way, crochet stretches but it tends to stay stretched out when stretched.
    KEEP GOING!!!❤❤❤

    • @ColletteKelly
      @ColletteKelly หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I disagree. I switched to crochet and have not gone back to knitting for 3 years not specifically because knitting was murder on my left elbow. I was in constant and persistent daily pain from knitting all the time. I do not get wrist or elbow pain from crocheting. The most i've experienced is some sort of hand pain after literally crocheting for 8+ hours a day, 7 days in a row. For 2 weeks. If i did that when i was knitting, i would have been in AGONY, more than i ever actually was.
      Plastic and wooden needles create more drag and therefore mean you're "pushing" your yarn off the needles more. I switched to metal needles and ditched my extremely expensive wooden needles and found it helped with the pain but not all the way.
      Then i discovered crochet and i did go back to knitting twice and felt that familiar pain again. Since then i have not gone back to knitting. I don't know if i ever will because of it.
      Crocheting is so, SO much easier to pick up and drop projects. You can slip in a stitch marker on the stitch, put your hook where ever you want because hey. You never have to worry about it other than NOT losing it. Then off you go with your daily whatever. Can crochet on the go and not worry about a thing.
      Knitting however? Hell NO. You have to worry about the needles. The poking. The snapping. The breaking of points and tips. The whole project coming OFF the needles. Dropped stitches. Knitting is just so much LESS fun in comparison and then you have to consider that when you want to get patterns online you have multiple ways of actual knitting styles so have to discombobulate everything into your own style. I use English style but most pattern styles videos are either USA style or continental style. This is not the same as giving stitches in USA and UK terms. That's easy to convert but trying to watch a video of someone doing the 2 different styles of knitting is like trying to watch knitting and crochet for the first time EVER. It's not fun.
      You don't worry about any of that rubbish with crocheting. Almost everyone does it the same way, the only difference is stitch conversions in patterns which are easy. Even when you do Tunisian crochet, it's always the same! It's just simpler and much easier.
      Crocheting life is an easier life. Don't ever subject yourself to the horror that is knitting. It's not worth it. I did it for 4 years and i wish i had just got into crochet in those 4 years instead of the last 3 years.
      Plus things done by crochet can ONLY be done by hand. Knitted projects can be mimicked by machines.

  • @nikitatavernitilitvynova
    @nikitatavernitilitvynova หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Yep, if you do a knit over and over you get a pattern called garter stitch and its the most beginner friendly pattern for blankets, hats, scarves. As typically a stockinette (what we usually associate with knitting) has a weight imbalance causing it to curl up. And that one is done by knitting on the right side (you'll notice the right side at the cast on row has a nice braided type look as opposed to little bumps) you knit and on the wrong side you purl. Knitting is also like forming long crochet chains that are attached to one another. Almost like in tunisian crocheting. Also to make it easy a knit and purl are opposites. If you look at a knit stitch from the back it'll look like a purl and vice versa. So in switching stitches you're making it so all the knits sit on one side and the purls on the other. Alternating these stitches for the more advanced gives you ribbing and more fancy finishes like a seed stitch where you alternate a purl and a knit so you get vertical lines (if you look at the same stitch from each row) of knits alternating with purls. Even cable knitting for the bravest out there. Where you create braids. You might know from other comments I crochet but I knit too. I think I learnt to knit first then how to crochet. And my mom taught me how to. I've made so far plenty of hats from sheep and stitch (I don't remember the name. Is it blank slate? Skater?) it's a simple hat knit with very giant needles. A scarf I believe (I actually might've crocheted that one), a shawl (it was a free pattern I found on lovecrafts), a sweater (also a free pattern on lovecrafts) and some other things.

    10:20 Yes! Literally earlier today I was talking to my friend about knitting (which I am also new to- or, at least, haven't done in over a decade) and, although he normally calls my crocheting "knitting," he was like "oh! you're talking about crocheting, right?" Gotta love the irony of putting in the effort to remember crochet, only for it to finally be knitting, lol.
    What a lovely gift! I do think you may notice a bit more tension/strain once you get faster- I certainly have as I've gotten back to knitting quickly, but it's definitely different and I think a little less stressful than crochet can get! That said, you should definitely check out continental knitting! A lot of people say it makes more sense if you're someone who is used to crocheting, and it doesn't require using your dominant hand to pull the yarn over, so it's less stress on your wrist _and_ faster. Good luck!

I have nerve damage from hand writing code for an exam, and it really affects my knitting to the point where I had to change styles. I very much recommend looking into "Very Pink Knits" and her video on portuguese knitting. You wrap the yarn around the back of your neck and use that to help with tension, and the individual stitches are made by flicking your thumbs. English knitting, I can't knit for longer than an hour if I'm lucky. Portuguese style, I can knit an entire day and not notice the time fly by :) Definitely recommend giving it a go :)

    Hi! I just found your channel through this video and you have such a great attitude about everything that I will subscribe as soon as I finish this comment!! Thank you for sharing your creativity!!
    One tip from someone who has taught both knitting and crochet is that it is a lot easier when you’re learning knitting to make sure that you are not making your stitches on the tip (or point) of the needle. Make sure to push the needle through the stitch before you start the next stitch so you don’t make the stitches too tight.
    The size of the needle determines the size of the loops you’re making and it’s important that those loops don’t get too small or it becomes hard to make the stitches on the next row.
    I found that my students would make the stitches on the needle tips when they were starting to knit faster, so I just wanted to suggest that you watch your knitting as you learn and practice making sure that you don’t get too tight.

    Holly!! I have been in the same boat, lifetime crocheter new knitter (again). This last time I started, about 2 months ago, I finally got it and can do it. Maybe it helps that I got Clover Takumi interchangeable circular needles? I previously got the Tunisian kit so all I really got was one set of needles but still they helped me get moving on knitting. I believe one of my problems was a conceptual hurdle because I could make whatever I wanted with a singular, short crochet hook provided that the project isn't a big ol Tunisian work. With knitting, I couldn't grasp that I may need different lengths of circulars for different projects. Setting aside crochet for about a month straight and just trying and trying knitting really helped. I might be a little too ambitious for my current skill as I would like to make either a sweater or cardigan and possibly steek it, but who knows, sinxe I've already steeked little practice pieces and they came out well. From one crocheter to another, you got this. Also, knooking is a really fun alternative to use for knitting needles, though I don't do it very often.

    Yes, people do call my crochet knitting -- so I bought myself a t-shirt which says "It's not knitting, it's crochet". I, like you, learned to crochet first, though I have been knitting for a few years now. I'm not sure which one is better for the hands; I think a lot of the strain on your hands/arms is due to how tight or relaxed you are when doing it, and some of that is going to be dependent on how nervous or relaxed you are with what you're doing. And you were being very relaxed. Yeah, knitting is very easy to frog... far too easy in some cases. The reason I chose to learn crochet first (alas, no grandmothers to teach me) was because I didn't want to worry about dropping stitches. I'm still much more confident with my crochet than my knitting.

    As a crocheter who then learned knitting as an adult basically, there are only two knitting stitches and then variations on these two and they're all called "different" stitches but they're really not. It's different than crochet in that their are more deviations in crochet. But in knitting the two main stitches are purl and knit. What you did at first was a garter stitch. It's doing the knit stitch on both sides. Stockinette is simply knitting on one side and purling on the other. This is when working flat. When working in the round (a tube), then that's a different story.

    New here! Wonderful knitting project! Thanks for the motivation to learn a new hobby! I have been looking at trying some hobbies as a form of self-care! For example, Diane in Denmark videos with the titles weekly planning self-care, she gives four self-care assignments/ideas that one can choose from for the week and in one of those videos she mentioned being creative. Also Mariane Cresp mentioned in her boost your mood video about creativity, Kennedy from the channel Cozy K, cozy hobbies to try videos and Morgan Long recent video the perfect cozy day preparing for Autumn she mentions having a self-care day based on the letters in your name. So I do not knit or crochet, but have been watching these types of videos as goals! Tilly is a cute cat!

    If you learned one is learning the knit stitch as soon as you’re comfortable enough then I’d recommend learning the purl stitch. It’s definitely not as comfortable as a knit stitch and it’s slower but it is nessasary. You also need to learn how to bind off, casting off is another word but the official word is binding off but either way is fine. You only need to switch hands and turn around if your not knitting in the round, if your knitting in the round make sure you have a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the row and then you join the round. You will not switch hands when you are knitting in the round you are only going in one direction. If you are flat knitting without joining in the round then in order for the bumps called purl stitches is to switch hands and turn over and then purl that round and then on the right side you would knit all the stitches. I have learned to knit the English style and prefer that way which is funny because I’ve learned to crotchet first before i learned to knit but i do prefer the English style which you have your yarn on your right hand and then continental is having your yarn in your left hand. I can knit both ways and heard continental is quicker but i still prefer the.english style.

    I think you should try casting off with a crochet hook its so much easier! Especially because you crochet. I can't really explain it but basically you use a crochet/tunisian hook instead of a needle at the end and you pick up the two loops, then just slip through it off the hook.

    Hi Holly!
    As a knitter who learned how to crochet after, and helped a crocheter friend learn to knit better, I have a tip!
    You may want to try Continental (or picking) style knitting. This style uses the left hand to tension your yarn (same as crochet!) and the right-hand needle to pull the yarn through old loops to make new loops (same as crochet!). Knitting this way will work with the muscle memory you already have from crochet, and make the whole process less awkward.
    You are learning the English (or throwing) method. English style knitting uses the right hand to tension the yarn. There's nothing wrong with this style! It will just take longer to teach your hands what to do when you already have left-handed yarn control muscle memory from crochet.

    Love your channel and vids. I recently got really daring and tried
    making socks using four double point knitting needles ( didn’t know what I was doing, can’t read a pattern very well)and they actually came great. Do you have a vid or a short on how you hold the needle and yarn. I did see on one of your vids you explaining it, but don’t remember which one. I have extremely bad pain in my wrists but more so in my thumb area. I’m looking for different ways to hold the yarn. I have tried rings, compression gloves, grips, changing how I hold the needle, on the needle side; but need to know if there’s any suggestions on the tension ( yarn holding ) side.

    Continental is a style of knitting. You get the same stitch pattern but it’s a different hand movement. There’s loads of different ones but the Most popular ones are continental and English style knitting.
    If you struggle with arm pain continental might be a better fit cause it’s smaller movements. It’s the one I use when I’m in pain but my problem is in my fingers rather than my arms

    Continental is a different style of holding your yarn and needles if you do one style you don't have to learn any of the others. you are doing English, not the language but the style, sometimes called Throwing and there is a variation of it called Flicking. It just means you hold you working yarn with your working needle ( typically in your left hand). But Continental is considered to be faster as it makes for a fluid single motion in making the stitches.
    {if you want an interesting rabbit hole WW2 espionage and its influence on knitting styles}
    There are only two stitches. Knit and Purl and everything is a combination/variation of them. So up next is the Purl.
    IMO (because I am not a Dr and don't know the science of it) Knitting and crochet works different muscles so if you have joint/nerve pain from one your not gonna feel it doing the other because your not using the same muscles that are irritating that joint/nerve. so knowing both is a great way to get a fiber arts fix when you need to rest that muscle/nerve/joint
