    I’m doing an eight month training, doing HTML, CSS, PHP, Python, UX/UI and some Cloud Computing. Building websites, little Python snippets to make my life easier... and in my spare time, I watch tutorials and motivational vids. Sometimes, I feel the imposter syndrome heavily, but mostly it’s fun and every little thing I understand sparks joy. I enjoy it so much.
    I hope this will be enough to get a job in May. I just couldn’t go on earning a minimum wage for a 50-60h/w in PR... am 30 and haven’t been able to afford anything nice or recreational in ages. Even got cut off by people because I can’t afford to do anything with them. Not saying this to pity myself; I know many have it way, way worse. Still, I hope coding is my way to a better life.

      Programming is an emotional roller coaster at times. With lows that make you question why you ever thought that you can do it in the first place and highs that give you a dopamine rush that make you feel like the nerdiest badass on the planet.
      If your goal is to get job ready then focus on those things, check out my job ready video that I mentioned towards the end of this video, it's sounds like you're on the right path. I've been broke and grew up pretty low income, so I know how that feels. Use that as motivation and remember that "Money won't solve all your problems, but it will solve all your money problems."
      Hustle hard to get where you want to be and look at it as a blessing that those fake friends left when they did, anyone who cuts off a friend due to their financial circumstance, wasn't a real friend to begin with. The older I get the less friends I have and there's a good reason for that.
      Thanks for watching and good luck on your journey!

    I wanted to say thanks for your TH-cam videos. I’ve been learning front end web development for three months already and I can basically create a fully responsive website with HTML CSS AND JS. Right now i am learning React and I’ve been getting a lot of anxiety out of nowhere and also doubting myself, your videos have been helping me, thanks 🙏🙏🙏

      I'm so happy that my videos have been helpful to you in your journey. Just take it one day at a time and if you feel like you're burning out just take a day or two off from coding, Looking back I wish I would have done a little more of that when I was learning. I was very hard on myself about taking time off and that wasn't good for my mental health.
      Good luck with React it's a great library and with knowing html, css, and js is good enough to start looking for freelance jobs or contributing to open source project. Just dive in a google everything you need to figure out while you work on your React skills.
      Thanks for watching and I look forward to hearing about your success!

    If you are self taught then you are probably somewhat obsessed about it. So it's not hard to exceed the abilities of somebody that is doing it by some random choice of career I think.

      @DorianDevelops  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Thanks for watching! I've heard a lot of people say the same about being self taught but many people who go to school for computer science do have a passion for it as well but at the end of the day it's all about what works for you when it comes to learning.

      it really depends on your background. People like Dorian feel like they NEED this in order to improve their lives. they have an inate motivation to do it to pull them out of the hole their lives are currently stuck on. It's either do or die and in those cases, it's certainly an obsession, but one that will get you somewhere better. Not everyone functions like this, some people just want big cash and this is just another opportunity for them to do so, but they eventually drop for something easier that won't burn them out

    Bro you are a really great youtuber, just want to say that no college teaches us how to code, every person you see who did coding, probably learned it by themselves. Colleges are actually worthless and they just are a piece of extra degree to add in ur profile in my opinion.

    • @DorianDevelops
      @DorianDevelops  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Thanks you very much, I'm sure that there's a lot of value in college and 10-20 years ago it was probably the only way to get a programming job. But the internet has changed all that and leveled the playing field for people who didn't have college as an option. I do think that college isn't worth the money nowadays and experience will almost always get you a job over a degree but some people need the structure of school in order to learn and being self taught can be pretty hard for a lot of people. With that said if a young person came to me and said they wanted to go to college for programming, I would tell them to go self taught first and save the $50k plus in tuition costs to put down on a house.
      Thanks for watching and the feedback, I really appreciate it!

I know you might have made some video in the past similar to my needs but I just want to know how much time does it actually take to prepare and how to approach those questions. On my second attempt and been at it every day for just over seven months. On the first try I was just a few weeks into Javascript and got really stuck and gave up... That was last year ( I wish I would have just pushesd through). Anyway I got made redundant from my last job and while looking for other work I jumped in again and just kept going when it got hard. Building a portfolio at the moment while studying mainly from FreeCodeCamp.
    To be honest I didn't think I would be able to code continuously like that but once I got into it it almost became second nature. It's a steep learning curve and there have been a few frustrations but I expect that to be par for the course.

    A hot take 2 years into the future: D's get degrees. I work with many developers and most of the developers who don't make it long are the ones with those "prestigious" degrees from universities that charged them $95,000 a year. I'll work with a guy who doesn't understand simple concepts every single day of the week if he's willing to learn, but I cannot work with people who genuinely believe 4 years of beer pong and being arrested for hazing after nodding off in class because they ran out of adderral to abuse makes you special.

    a thing to get in account by doing this, burnout exists. Everybody learns at different rates some digest information easier some harder, if you do so much learning everyday then it's impossible to not get burnout. If you feel like you're getting exhausted while coding then make sure to take a break, it'll hurt your concentration and you will do a lot of mistakes in your code

    As someone who has a degree in Informatics engineering I can say without a doubt that my studies never taught me anything I can use in the market of IT. Nothing. Just a useless piece of paper. Now I started learning to code in Python on Udemy. And I can say that in 3 months of coding I learned more that my university ever taught me on anything. There is a serious disconnect of IT universities with what the market needs to get a job to justify a degree.

    Thanks for the advice, it’s much appreciated. I do have one question for you though. When you where studying programming, did you take notes at the same time or did you just memorized and ran through programs? What’s the best way to study?

      I think that the best way of learn programming is every time you learn something new, always practice it and i promise that this knowledge is gonna be remembered for you in the future and is a technique more useful than just memorize.

  • @PerfectSense77

    I like how you give a realistic figure like one or two hours a day as a baseline. I hear people throw out stuff like three hours every single day. It's just not realistic. You come home exhausted from a draining day. What you've got left in the tank is not suitable for a mammoth coding session every single day. Committing to an hour or two is much more achievable and less likely to get skipped. You'll be more productive too.

    Make a video about how to get in the right highway when starting to learn things .
    I say this because I started with JS , then went to HTML and CSS and now I'm learning a little bit of C for college and algorithms . I'd rather I knew some path so I didn't lose much time . I'd rather start over again and start off with HTML and CSS and then JS . The right highway don't let us thinking about what's next and this uncertainty that makes us feel bad . This video would've helped me 4 months ago .

    guh, I wish all of these resources were available before public school killed every ounce of pleasure I received from learning anything. I swear, it is literally, not exaggerating, Pavlovian conditioning to make you feel like you are in a prison every time you even think about learning anything. I can read all day, and often do, but if I know it's remotely educational and supposed to be positive, I just get this feeling of dislike and wanting to distance myself from it. Never had that before public school, and haven't been able to get rid of it since. And it's not something that will go away or can be logic'd away; it just feels disgusting and undesirable every time I do it now, and everyone has their snide comments like "you just don't want to work," or "you just have fear of (failure OR accomplishment; they say both, which just goes to show how moronic each opinion is, IMO)." It was the literal repeat feeling of disliking where I was and what I was doing every day, multiple times a day, for years, first in high school then in college, that gave me a passionate dislike first for schools in general, but now anything remotely related to them, including what should be positive self-education, it's just a gut feeling I can't get rid of; that I despise it. Even for subjects I like. I like psychology. I like coding. I like marketing. I like business. Cannot STAND reading anything about any of them for more than an introduction to the material. The writing is always filled with such horse-shittery that I would rather poke my eyes out than read another line, because most people are "selling by the word." They make a fantastic introduction, because it's a shortened, non-assholish version of the entire point of the book. Then they ruin it by going off on bullshit tangents that waste DAYS of my time by the time I'm done, and the "education" just disgusts me to the point I'd rather not have it. And I used to not mind some bullshit, it actually used to be nice getting a bit more involved with the work. You know what it feels like? You're being forced to go slow paced, doing something you heard a year ago, and not only that, you don't even have time to go over it thoroughly because in 5 minutes you have to leave to go to some other half-fledged useless bullshit course, so you have the "fun" job of trying to "master" eight subjects at once, while being on a timer than ensures you digest absolutely none of the shit you were reading, while hokey morons pass out A's like candy and tell you how great everything is, while you know it's a giant bullshit waste of time. 5 days a week. 4 classes a day. Multiple times per class. For years. I don't know what kind of bullshit drugs they put in kids' water in public school, but the fact ANYONE can learn after all of the horse shit is absolutely beyond me. There's something defective in your brain if you can sit in those nonsense classes with that bullshit system.
