Thanks, I may try this. 2013 car with chrome plastic covers. Rotated tires last year after having car a few months and don't think I did the usual oil spray while off. Now have two spinning studs on one wheel.
@@martyjoseph9507 I had to rotate the stud ever couple of whacks with the hammer. Basically, you're going to bend that thing back and forth until it gives
You're so amazing bro, thank you! Saved me hours of work! I was stuck thinking I had to drill out this lug. You're out here blessing us with a time saving tip✝️🙏🏽💯🗣👍🏽
That was awesome, in the old days we referred to any similar technique as "Brute force and ignorance", Unfortunately, I am dealing with a McGard style wheel lock on a mag wheel, on a spinning stud... So I don't think I would be able to twist if off in this manner as much as I would like to!
I tried drilling out the stud first without much success. I tried your method with a shorter extension and pipe (all I had) and it came off pretty easy. I think the drilling weakened it quite a bit. Thanks so much!
Well this method is pretty smart, given this is on some ford fushion where you can get an entire new rim for like $50. You can mess up the rim and not lose sleep over it. I have some wheels that have recessed lug holes. The bigger sockets won't fit, let alone the 19mm that I need to take off the lugs. It also doesn't help that the wheels are unobtainable anymore and cost significantly more. I had an oscillating tool laying around. Probably going to use that to slice up as much as I can and then finish it with drilling. Sucks but it's what I have to do. Not enough clearance behind it to get at the 4 mounting bolts for the wheel bearing.
Leaving this comment just in case it helps someone else… my teenage son called me and said he couldn’t get one of the lug nuts off his new-to-him mustang, so I started watching videos like this one to prepare myself. When I got there yesterday morning I tried putting my impact on it, hoping to “zip it off”, but the 19mm socket I brought didn’t fit. So I asked him for the socket he used. Without much thought I put it on and zipped - of course it just spun. I noticed the wheel was still firmly attached to the hub - it’s as if the nut wasn’t loose at all. So I quickly decided I wouldn’t try the method in this video because I didn’t want to risk cracking the wheel. So, out came the cut-off wheel. I hoped to drill out the wheel stud but first I wanted to expose the end of it by cutting the cap off the nut. I was surprised at how easily I was able to cut it (and no sparks!) It was then it occurred to me that this was one of those lug nut styles with the aluminum “skin” or “cap”. I stopped and considered the situation for a moment… I looked at the socket my son had handed me… 7/8”. I’d never heard of a 7/8” lug nut. Aren’t they usually 13/16 or 3/4 (19mm)? Was it possible this was a too-large lug nut and the skin was just spinning? So I walked over to his tool box, grabbed a 13/16 and a hammer, and pounded it on to the spinner, smashing the skin back down around it. Came right off. Had to buy new lug nuts (they were all damaged anyway), but at least we didn’t have to remove the rear axle to replace the wheel stud! Best of luck everyone :)
@@HooptiesGarage Yes of course, in your case it was :) I was just leaving the comment because I believed the same thing had happened to my son's car, but I turned out to be wrong. So, just because the socket turns, it doesn't mean the wheel stud is turning. The socket could be slipping on the nut. I was simply noting it in case some other poor idiot like me doesn't realize there could be another cause!
@@truthsmiles yes you are right. They also now sell 1/2 mm sockets for lugs with these plastic caps, matco sells them I have a set. it's ashame they can't produce decent lug nuts anymore
Really depends, I have used this method on recessed wheels it just depends on how much room they give you, I just did it on a newer 4runner with recessed lugs took a little more time but it did work. Good luck !
I came across this same problem with two studs on the same wheel being dislodged. It was quite ironic because the reason I needed the wheel off was to replace the rear hubs. Unfortunately, the shape of my car's wheels didn't lend itself well to this method so I was stuck with having to drill them out.
A very interesting solution but I think this might be problem on my Ford Focus - 15" OEM alloy wheel since the lug nut is deeper inside compared to the one you're working on here. Probably end up damaging it?
I would give it a try I just did this on a newer 4 runner that had lug nuts recessed and it worked. You don't get as much movement but it still snapped it off.
I ran into this issue while trying to change my brakes on a Lexus GX 470; I figured if I took it to a tire shop (the lug nut gurus) they could try and break it off since they most likely had to run into this issue before with the amount of lug nuts they take off. Unfortunately they couldn’t get it off or break It for me and recommended I’d go to a different tire shop or a mechanic which were wanting to schedule me a few days out for the service with a $130 hr fee! They also recommended to drill out, bruh drill it out? Lol!! I looked up the reamer used to drill it out and it was costing $250+ and the reviews said it was a horrible tool. I didn’t want to go that route anyway! I had this idea in my head and told them what if you used a pipe to break it off and they said no it won’t work. After some searching I came across this video and voilà!!!!! My idea wasn’t so stupid anymore (after all I’m a mechanical engineer, why would this idea be stupid? It’s friggin GENIUS!!!) I might’ve bent the extension tip while putting all the torque on that pipe but hey the set of 22 piece only cost me $32, and I only basically lost out on 1 cheap extension. This definitely saved my day and the spinning stud didn’t damage the wheel hub which I was afraid might’ve happened because the stud was spinning in the hub hole. The wheel hub material is harder than the stud material therefor when I popped in the new stud it fit snugly! Great video!! Thank you for sharing your idea and saving my day and money!!
I have same problem with one lug nut. But the bigger problem is that it's on alloy wheel. And no space to use extra force to break off the bolt. Any suggestions please??
Probably looking at trying to drill, start with small bit and work your way up you may have to jam the lug with screwdriver etc to prevent it from spinning while you drill
