He welcomed Moyers to his ranch in California and we share some gems from the conversation including a story about oatmeal meat and his humble upbringing, his roots in the Democratic party, his keys to getting out of poverty, and what truly separates America from the rest of the world. Not really. His intellect is poor & he doesn't have any type of aura where you would want to be around him.
Mister Sarajevo I think he swings so far in the opposite direction it becomes charismatic. A hopeful optimist might be fooled once but after decades of unfulfilled promises, seedy deals and unethical behavior being uncovered, the people become desensitized to the typical politically correct culture, because we know it’s gilded; the people pretending to suddenly care about decency are the most indecent people on the planet.
Trump’s charisma, if he has any, comes from being so contrary to what has become status quo that it feels relatable. In the campaign he basically said whatever he felt like, or at least, that’s the impression that comes across.
Mister Sarajevo Was Winston Churchill charismatic? And there you go. Different strokes, but all their main points at their core are a common sense tough grit attitude. I can guarantee you would see a harder side of Reagan if he was leading today and just looked around at the state of the country.

The American Dream was never about being a Millionaire. It was about being able to go from nothing to something. Being able to own a house and support a family. The belief getting a job would be all you needed to get out of the slums, that was definitely true once. But that dream is fading more and more every year. People can work 2 full time jobs and still barely feed their families. Now two people in a relationship have to both work full time jobs to bring in the same wages just the husband was bringing in the 1950s. In the end though Reagan was right about something though, this country has lost its warmth. People mock the working class as lazy because they're poor, they think the system works because they've never had to climb up from the bottom. I may not agree with Reagan on much, but it least the man had a sense of decency.

Reagan was many things, but you have to remember he started at the bottom. You can call him a savior or a monster, but truth is he's just a human. A human shaped by the world the raised him the the challenges it threw at him. Wasn't there something that was told to all of us as kids, don't judge a person until you walk a mile in their shoes? It's always such a losers argument when they say oh well you're just saying I can stop being poor overnight, no nobody is saying that, just like they are saying if you start working out today you won't be muscular tomorrow, but if you never start working out to begin with, you'll never get better physically. If you just sit on your ass and expect the government to write you a check, you'll never get better either, only you can make yourself better.
Reagan always had an optimism in his speaking. Much needed today.
that's the best way to describe why he was the way he was. the optimistic trickledown idea, and that the best interests of the people are sought after by people looking to only make profit off them.
I think we need more realism when that sort of optimistic belief can doom people that aren’t accounted for by someone’s or another’s perspective.

An america where more than half of americans go broke if they suddenly gain unforseen medical expenses. An indebted or poor working and middle class without a social safety net can't buy fancy goods and services if they don't have money! This is what caused the soviet economy decline, a whole lotta money but literally nothing to purchase with it. Rich people save their money and the working and middle class tend to spend their money, decreasing taxes only redistributed income to the rich and reagan's lax regulatory environment led to consoldation and lack of competition which is what really drives innovation.

It's just disappointing for me to see most people in the comments arguing politics. I feel like that's not what this series is about. It's about looking back at the words of people who held great power and/or influence, and also maybe just thinking deeply about a moment in time. I think that's what the music and atmosphere of this show tries to evoke, too. Like, this man is dead now but he was once President of the United States, one of the most influential countries on Earth. That alone is pretty amazing. Now I'm not gonna say what I thought about the guy, because frankly that doesn't _matter_. I will say that it was fascinating to listen to him and to try to understand the mind of an important figure in history (note: important doesn't mean good OR bad). It seems to me that most people _want_ to argue though, even if you try to extend an olive branch and focus on what we have in common, people will smack it away just to be contentious--people of all political and ideological leanings, mind you.
Please don't argue in the responses to this. There's a whole comment section for that. You could say something thoughtful though or just stop by to say 'hi'. =)
I see things the same way. Hi there. Personally, I think Reagan struck a chord with Americans because he was an optimist at the right time. He saw a vision of 1980s America that was content and at peace. He was a gentle speaker, who made clean jokes, and refrained from cursing. It's sad how relevant the question was about seeing the other side of America. Reagan and his followers let homophobia get in the way of helping the poor soles with aids, wheras Jesus himself would have healed them in person.

In authoritarian nations (and workplaces), you don't have freedom to excel. Reagan was right about that as well.

Its tech sector is now one of the most powerful in the world and is comparable to sillicon valley in some aspects. However, the main fault with authoritarian governments is that they can make arbitrary rulings and regulations on businesses and wipe out savings without pushback from private groups and thats why authoritarianism isn't the best when it comes to economic growth

@@namuzed not particularly I'm a very pro personal responsibility kind of person, but if someone needs help I'll assist as much as I can, I understand what it means to be homeless and poor, I've been that way for years, even though I now have a roof over my head I know the struggles and I dont want people to have to suffer like I did, I try my best to help people like that because I remember begging for change and food on the street corner and my compassion and care for those in that situation has only increased, if I could I would give the shirt off my back to help these people, because I know if I didn't work 2 jobs I would be back in the same situation as before, homeless and hungry

I don’t mind helping folks out who absolutely need it, but if you just sit doing nothing when opportunity is given, then it’s not my problem. We should all help out now and then but not to the point to where that person becomes dependent on that person or asking people for help.
Man, Ronald Reagan was a seriously charming idealist. Shame that he had too little faith in regulation in economics, though. His platform's alright in moderation since all rules can be improved when analyzed critically, but you don't save a sick tree by chopping it down, nor do you get rid of a tumor using a chainsaw.
I guess that's a problem with both parties: they go for the pie in the sky because idealism is pretty and amazing, but it can fall apart fast if not tempered with realism.
The sad thing is that the only thing that people will listen to is idealism, if politicians talked about what worked more than what sounds nice we would get a lot farther in society.
Reagan didn't de-regulate murder or theft, he de-regulated the kinds of restrictions lobbies fight for to create corporate privilege. I don't agree with all he did or thought, but de-regulation is key to have a fair and healthy economy.

Since the government takes 33% of the money I work for, they have a responsibility to spend it on infrastructure like schools, roads, forests, public health, etc not on overpriced military programs and expensive lunches, trips, etc under the pretense that decisions that affect my life are better handled over golf at a place I can't afford partly because I pay soo fucking much in taxes, insurance, and healthcare!

Most of your taxes in the healthcare sector go to managing the insurance industry, hence why the US _technically_ spends so much per person yet still has dog shit coverage. Ideally, we should dissolve the entire industry and spend that money directly on the people themselves

@@user-if8po5pu7j This is an old comment but back then federal tax rate was 25% for my tax bracket plus 8% social security + medicare. I live in the south. I don't pay state income tax but our sales tax is 8% so there's that too.

The economy of the Regan era was great and I legitimately feel like he did everything in his power to help Americans prosper but i feel like a combination of a corruption of his philosophies for the sake of corporate greed and an overly strict adherence to his ideals has lead to a gradual downward trend of the American standard of living. Wages are statistically lower now than they were under Regan and the economy is overall worse and I don't think Regan would appreciate his ideas being used in a way that doesn't promote prosperity like they did in the 80s

"Economy" is traditionally measured by gross domestic product (GDP) of a nation, which has grown tremendously in nearly all nations since the 1980s and has grown very much also in the USA. So the overall "economy" of USA is way better.
I think what you're meaning to say is that the working people (the creators of wealth) get a much smaller percentage of economic productivity than the investors & owners of capital (the funders of new corporations). And I agree, that trend is morally wrong and should be reversed.

Right? Here's the thing---I was reading a Buster Keaton autobio where back back back in the day---RR's day, also---it was so much easier to get employment. BK's friend told him about an opening for a singer in a vaudeville type act. He walked in, the boss was eating lunch and didn't even look up from his plate. He says to BK, "Can you sing?" BK says he could. The boss told him to be in the theater ready to work the next day. I've been unemployed for 10 months, and I've found that employers are not so willing to train anymore---they want *exact* experience or it's on to the next candidate. Even having years of experience in the same field is not doing people any good, if you don't have the detailed exact knowledge they want. Things back in RR's day, the way they hired and promoted, well, it's not anywhere near that anymore. We've shot ourselves in the foot.
The problem keeping down the poor today, just as Reagen would say, is the government. A free market with minimal limitations was what Reagen used to lift up so many out of poverty and into the new middle class. With so many limitations from government, (ie. child labor laws, minimal wage) it's hard for people to make something of themselves or get in to a decent position with a family.
Just don't read his supporters comments. To stress inducing.

I think we all can learn a thing or two from Reagan, he truly believed that if you put your heart and mind and passion Into something you will get everything back and more, but no one nowadays believes this they are too busy trying to make their pain, problems and empty pockets someone else’s problem instead of trying to fix it themselves. everything that happens...happens because we let it be as such regan said it right if you want to break free of being poor you have to do something
that's a great ideal when your workplace and landlord exploit you with very little ability to fight back. the problem isnt with laziness or lack of trying, it's with a lack of upward mobility

Beyond him basically telling people who are poor to "get a job", gotta love how he basically went to college working as a dishwasher, cause holy shit you could do that back then. Reagan saw all the advantages he had and took it away from the generations after.
Reagan didn't do that. College costs started going up when easy student loans were introduced. The colleges no longer had to charge what people could spend, but what they could borrow. Ditch student loans as a thing and I guarantee colleges would cut tuition fees by a sizeable chunk. They can't make money if no one's willing to give it to them.
@@1krani he helped passed tax cuts that significantly lowered the amount for student grants and limited how many people were eligible for them. He's basically the reason why student loans became so popular

Besides, the govt giving grants as to who can afford college means some unaccountable bureaucrat can deny you a grant on a technicality if they don't like your politics. Sports performance is okay, but anything else, that's up to the govt to determine? That doesn't sit right with me.
@@1krani Yes, but they weren't in as common use before him. His actions directly led to their popular use. Regardless of whether or not you prefer that to grants (and I think that's a weird reason not to like them, pell grants have been around forever and were based on financial need, only), he is directly responsible for, as you put it, the "easy student loans" becoming popularly used.

While I disagree with him politically, I like how this video was put together. It shows his thought process even though I think it was dangerously delusional. The opportunities that were available to him despite being poor are not opportunities available to everyone. People have to appreciate how damn lucky they can be, and not falsely attribute it to their own gumption, and claim a lack of character to those whom struggle to find their own fortunate circumstance.
I'm confused as to how Reagen was dillusional. He believed the sole factor that kept poor people in the gutter was the government. He believed that those who were truly willing to claw their way out of poverty would do so in the free market. The Reagen Revolution brought upon economic growth that would persist through the rest of the 20th century.
I find that most people who subscribe to this line of thinking are just pissed off that they can't immediately attain vast wealth, as opposed to having actual problems with the idea of hard work and skill translating into success in business. Some even fail to understand that they are not as valuable as Bill Gates, believe it or not. ಠ_ಠ
It's not about being poor or ignorant themselves; since nearly everyone experiences those states of life and mind. But it's about the willingness to learn or the willingness to seek economic prosperity. Slaves hundreds of years ago were forced to live a horrid lifestyle anywhere from months to decades; such as Fredrick douglass who didn't escape bondage and become truly educated until his mid 30's. People have their peaks at different times in life. It's the people that never cared to try hard enough and now that they are in their 40's-70's they figure what's the point. So with that particular line of thinking, anyone born into the ghetto are just automatically horrible people?
The problem is -- we don't have an America that Reagan was championing. Everything is subsidized, inflated -- which only makes things tremendously more expensive; i.e. college education.

Reagan was at alright guy. He should Ihave been tougher on immigration and relaxed on gun restrictions but compared to many of the other presidents he was a saint.
Even though some of his policies had the reverse effect he intended, i think he gets a bad rep of being the ultimate evil, surely the blame should lay on the government and the buisnesses at the time not soley on him, and yes compared to recent presidents he is a saint

aspartame has not been proven to be a dangerous substance. there's a lot of misinformation that surrounds it. Without commenting on Reagan's politics, I just want to clear the air on aspartame.
I had hung over symptoms, allergies I never had before in my life and a recurring deep, bronchial cough caused by my sinuses dripping down my throat. They all stopped almost immediately when I gave up Diet Coke. There are too many people reporting the same thing to be my imagination. The cause of gulf war syndrome is most likely aspartame poisoning since they fed bottled crystal light to the troops in the first gulf war and that was full of aspartame.
I'm just saying the majority of clinical research (from various organizations) have shown that it is not particularly harmful. Soda in general is just a poor beverage that people should consume sparingly, if at all. Doesn't Diet Coke also contain things like Phenylalanine? That substance has been proven to exhibit negative affects on certain groups of people(which is why diet beverages must warn consumers about it) whereas aspartame has not.
In terms of the gulf war syndrome, I don't know much about that. But, just considering the fact that a bunch of people are in a completely foreign environment and under a bunch of stress (in the modern data focused era which would collect more information on incidents of illness), I think there are too many other variables that could be causing/contributing to sickness. It would be silly to pin it all on aspartame.
I'm not really trying to debate you, but here's just a different point of view. If it doesn't make you re-consider, that's fine. Hope you have a good (aspartame free) day!
