When he actually gets serious and talks about the comedians role in society. Man that hit me especially considering how he passed and what was going on in his life.
Sad thing is he never made it to 70. Man, I miss Williams. He seemed so real in a world of Hollywood fakes. Mrs. Doubtfire is my favorite movie I watched of his as a kid.
Looking back on his interviews so many things become crystal clear, you know, they snap into sharp focus. Robin was unable to open up and really be authentic. As soon as things got too close he jumped into his shtick. Even in a very sympathetic venue like Inside The Actors Studio, where most actors really open up about their craft, he jumped out of his chair and into his old routine. It was almost like he was saying "I'm worthless as a human being, my only value is in my silly antics." God this shit makes me sad. As always, great work Blank on Blank.
Interviews, even short ones, can be incredibly revealing. I think one of the most enjoyable part of drawing these (and listening to them over and over) is a feeling that you're getting to know the people just a little bit, through their own little timing choices while speaking.
Patrick Smith I love all your work Patrick, I still think your Bette Davis piece was the best animation done for a Blank on Blank short. I hope you get an award for it.
someguyontheguitar I think you're right. You can feel the jump, and the contrast between him talking and sharing, and then the "act." The interesting thing about Robin is that I think he was almost always ad-lib (but I don't know for sure).. he would jump so quickly, so often that sometimes what he said doesn't even make sense, but we laugh because of the delivery!
I think the best and funniest part of robin williams is when he doesn't do his schtick act, but when he's talking seriously and just throws in a little attitude. like english humor. that makes me laugh.
i cried a lil while watching this , Robin Williams was one of the first actors i saw on screen in Mrs.Doubtfire when I immigrated to Canada. We miss you robin :( you were such a pure soul the good ones always go to soon
this video was recommended to me in 2020, right in the middle of a pandemic. that is so eerie knowing that he was envisioning what life would be like in the future and that they were talking about masks, but only the figurative type. this video gave me some thoughts and some laughs I have needed in such a long time. this is a good refresher. Robin would never know what it's like to live in a virus infested world and how things would drastically change. depression just won and it killed him. one of my fav quotes from him was this one: "I used to think that the worst thing in life was to end up alone. It's not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel alone." I miss having a comic and genuinely gentle people in this world. there seems to be none of it now. but I am at least glad that such a being has inspired so many people to follow the same footsteps. Rest in peace Robin Williams. 😔
mrsethcorbin In a lot of instances, maybe all of them, the censoring was probably done to the audio when the interview was relatively fresh, not by the folks at BoB. And probably therefore unable to be undone.
Robbin Willams was such a joy to watch growing up as a kid Jumanji being my favorite my mom and I probably watched 30 times together, what a wonderful message and fantastic animation.
I know it's old comment but... marvelous achievements of 2020 eating bats, hoarding toilet paper, protesting, exploding cities, it truly was a year that will be remembered!
I'm so glad I got to meet Mr. Williams for the brief time I did and thank him for his stand up records. It's still one of my best memories and I'm forever indebted to the circumstances that brought me to that point! Rest in peace, you beautiful, magnificent soul.
These times we live in... I wish these people were still with us. Thank you to PBS for collecting and uploading these interviews. We miss you Mr Williams.
I was in my first year of film school when I scrolled past an article revealing that Robin had died. I had never lost a relative or anyone of remote closeness at that time. I remember feeling profoundly sad and then very weak. It's still really difficult to wrap my head around. There will never be another like him. Enjoy your time folks, smile.
Watching this in 2020 hits so much harder than watching it any time prior. It makes me wonder how Robin Williams perspective on today's world would look. He was so much deeper than a man who could make you laugh. He had wisdom in every inch of his mind, and he constantly teetered between the mindsets of the philosopher and the comic. He just knew when and where to use each one. I wish that he could tell the world his perspective today.
I am watching this in 2020 during our pandemic without our beloved Robin. We sure could use you now. That was hard to watch knowing that he wasn't going to be here. We miss you.
We'll always miss you Robin Williams. You've done enough. More than enough. Proud of you. :) Such a strong man.And to anyone out there who probably read this comment one day.. or maybe a years later, I just wanna say.. Keep on living. You're doing so good. To come this far after all those shits* you have been through everyday, you are such a strong creature in this world. Hang on here my buddy. Wherever you are now when you read this, whatever you do, whenever it is.. I love you. :)
No matter the sound bite, any video of Robyn brings a tear to my eye. The world lost a bit of its sparkle when he left us. I feel worst for Zelda. I’ve had my own trials with depression. I wish he was still with us because we all need to make light of the things in life that hurt us in so many ways. Thanks for the laughs Robyn
It still hurts. It will never stop hurting, and that makes it hurt in a different way. I don't even know how to deal with this, and it is only going to get worse as the years go by. So I have to think about it in another way. Because that way is impossible. I think of it like working out. Every time you do it, you hurt. But you get a little stronger. You don't ever stop hurting, but you do gain the ability to do more--ever so slowly--you can do more. So after a while you don't even start with the 5lb weights anymore. You've accepted and know that you can just start with the 10lb ones. That is what it is going to be like. A constant struggle to burden the weight of the years piling up, and to slowly adjust yourself to it. So that you are aware that it is there, but it won't slow you down.
I try to do something similar in recognizing that the darker things are and the tougher the road gets, the brighter that little neon sign above the comedy club seems and the laughs seem to all come more easily in those moments of light because I know first hand how depressing and dark life can be in our travels across this vast and confusing universe...Godspeed to you and to the one and only Mork from Ork, wherever he travels now...
To make it to 2014 at age 63 is still a huge accomplishment. He was 40 years old and in his prime when he did this interview. The sad reality is, every year that ticks by ours eyes are opened to the horrible state of the world we live in has become, death is the enevitable enemy no one really wants to face. The opposite of life is nothing. So I think robin realized this to the full. Why wait around and rot, and see others rot around you
There is no _right or wrong._ There are just _different ways._ And just as a "We'll all die and humanity is full of sorrow and blackness" is a way to see/feel things. Just as is "The world is full of hope and meaningful human encounters. There is goodness in every day depending where we choose to look." is another. I could argument about the benefits of one or the other but I think that would go against what I said about being no right or wrong. But let me just say that the latter is more _interesting._
Dude, he had a PLETHORA of severe health problems. I'm sure it was just that he wanted to stop suffering, and not become a burden. Stop romanticizing it. He wouldn't want that, we literally just listened to an interview where he talks about how human we all are. He was human and suffering and did something that humans do when they are suffering: end it.
Anything out of his mouth could be funny, it was just the way he said it. He was one of the great gifts to us. To remind us that we're still human and not to take ourselves too seriously

Robin Williams was the most real? He had more masks than anyone. He rarely dropped it without picking up another
