You have all my respect. I appreciate the people who dare to have this way of life. How about your system is a small one that covers your needs. I recommend you to mount another one or two panels, and possibly one more to give two batteries and you can go without a generator and between November and April. I have a system of 900w 4 trojan t105re batteries and a 1500w pure sin inverter that covers all half-house consumers. Only well sunny days
Marine deep cycle batteries are suppose to be drained a little at a time such as with a trolling motor. Cranking amps are what car batteries do. Who ever told you all that was wrong.
I'm starting a new channel on solar because we can't have enough videos. I just ordered 2 mono 100w panels, 2 charge controllers, dusk to dawn sensors etc. I plan on sharing too. Oh, my winters are like 3 days in the 30s and the rest of winter like 60 degrees.
Have a cabin off grid wood heat only , thinking of putting in a propane events tent heater. Need some power for fan and thermostat, this was a great help...thank you.
100w panel is like a trickle charger. 3 more panels up there and a victron controller would be more than enough. Oh and get at least one 100ah lithium. You have only 50ah useable with them big lead weights. Having a 1000 or 1500w solar generator is always a good backup power source.
This just became my favorite video on running a cabin with batteries. I appreciate you showing the things you use the batteries to power. Great job and thanks! I’m subscribing and checking out your other vids. Good luck!
Cool setup. Im up in thw mountains in southwest Colorado. We get a lot of sun. I haven't used it over the winter. Was thinking of adding another 100 watt panel. Im buying a alpicool frig. Worth the money
I would have already cut that tree...I didn't get enough wood last year anyways..I started with 2 batteries and next week I'll have 8...I get them 2 at a time until I get enough..I'm thinking 8 is enough if the sun is on my 4 panels..one got shattered in a 72 mph wind gust but it's still working but I think I'm gonna wind up with 3 more panels so that'll give me six 100 watt panels...I bought the 4215 BN controller which can handle 10 panels if I ever get a roof to put them on lol...my uncle also is too old to camp out anymore and he had 2 of the old 45 watt kits that he gave me...they're the harbor freight kind that work in low light and they have long enough wires to put them where they work better so in this winter low light they help keep the voltage up...I only had 2 panels before this snow and had just laid a couple more panels out which are hooked up but not mounted just frozen in place for now lol...I've got to get a couple more batteries so that I can run my little Lincoln greyhound welder..I'm building one inch square steel frames around the panels so that there's 2 panels in each frame..we have a lot of wind here and I'm about tapped from buying stuff..I went with a 2000 watt Aims inverter/charger 24 volts and if I had to do it again I might have gotten a 1500 watt one but I also figured the heavier one might last longer idk I'm new to all this too...I didn't want to have to buy another one and I'm kinda scared of that so I got the one I did and crossing fingers..since I can't use the roof I'll put mine out for the neighbors to gawk at...the first time the power goes off it won't be me though..(our freezing rain season is in March)..I used about 12 ft of #2 welding lead to make all the short cables and with the 2 batteries I'm getting I'll have $2100 in my setup but itll run about anything I plug into it...I have to tell you this solar stuff is addictive...the more you get the more you'll want so you have to decide where to back off buying stuff but that's on you..
Thanks a lot for your video, after Venezuela got a five day blackout I'm looking forward to buy a system like yours here in Mexico, we have a specialist leaning government since a last year and I don't want to be without light, phone and internet
With 100 watts and a 20ah lifep04 battery I can charge my kids 4 phones, 2 apple tablets, 2 laptops, 1 really bring lamp it lights a whole room no problem, 1 laptop, three nintendo switches. And every now and then an xbox and tv !!! Crazy ! I definitely have to expand ! It be really cool to hook it up to a TV and run it all day on it. My only problems are during the night. That small battery can't keep up. I'm going to save up for a 100ah lifep04 battery though 😀
Solar is OK yours is good and cheep and works when it's sunny lol if u have flowing water and wind why not top it up with either of those with a simple alternator set up , hope all's well at the cabin love it
Don't cut the oketree!🙈... LoL. Just off the top of it to the lower branches and it will bush out an shade the side of the house in the summer but not the top if it. 👍.
Instead of the input from the charge controller going to one battery and the output to the inverter coming from the second battery, I think it is better to cross connect them. Like the plus from charge controller connected to pos on the first battery and the neg from the charge controller connected to the neg of the second battery. Then the output to the inverter connected to the opposite posts. Hope that nakes sense. Good vid, thanks.
I'm a new subscriber 9/30/17. I am no expert. If you would design your panels where they can be tilted during the winter, I feel that you would get more charging done during the day. I am enjoying your videos. Thanks, Charlie
up then panel voltage's and use mono's in winter? then with poor light there might just be enough current to get a charge into the batteries.(at worst saves having them in a low charge state through winter).
You should wire your batteries with plus on one battery and neg on the other battery to distribute the charge evenly between the two to prolong life....
Thats stupid. Thats in series. You only do that with 6 volt batteries. Unless you really want 24 volts. Then that inverter would smoke. No.. keep doing what your doing. Me? Id get about 6 more panels and 6 more batteries.
And some people, like all three who have commented before me, don’t understand wiring for balanced charging which is what the OP is saying. Wiring the batteries in parallel and wiring the charger to the pos on one battery and the neg on the other battery provides balanced charging for two batteries.
It's pronounced "sign"wave, not sin. It's spelled sine, short for sinusoid. 🤓As long as your happy w/your solar setup, keep it! The technology is really advancing. By the time you're ready to upgrade you'll really get a bang 💥for your buck!
Need about 6 panels on thier as many lithium batteries as you can get they hold thier voltage and amps on high loads and can use more % of the capacity high watt inverter pure some wave 3000watts use induction jobs for cooking electric oil filled radiators up and down converter for other devices 5v and 12volt setup .nice setup mppt is what I would use
Great set up. I'd like when I drop a cabin in vt- or nh- can you run a couple lights and watch a movie all night on 100watts ? I'd probably start off with 2 panels hope I can run. With just 2 batterys what's the model of your gassless batterys? Thanks a lot. Love a plain and simple set up with outlets and 4-6 lights. Outside can just use a few. Mini self contained solar spotlights
Check out my upgrade video. 100 watts is ok in the summer but that's it. The 12v batteries are great because they don't gas or need maintenance but they don't last as long either. I've since went with 6v and they are way better.
i have a small fridge in my camper the 4 battery's power pack i use will run fridge all night off a 900 watt invert-er that got 230 watt mono solar panels & 5 harbor freight solar panels for low light charging! i also have a small gas Genny, satellite and tv run off the system but some recorder like DVD or VCR do not run off invert-er right it odd!

I run a battery charger to my batteries when ever the gen is on at least my light last when the gen is off and I have to get up in the night the lights are on their own circuit and run a long time on a full battery.
I need power to run a Koolatron fridge on a patio with no electic outlet. It’s a 12V fridge I’m thinking of buying a solar setup to run it and some LED lights maybe recharging a ph or laptop too. I've improved my solar since this old video. I now run 470 w and 2 trojan L16 420 amh batteries (6 volt). A buddy of mine has the lithium batteries but they don't seem to do well in the cold.
I think if I was in your situation, before I cut down the Oak tree I would add another solar panel or two, that is if I ran out of power with the one panel
I know this is almost a year old and maybe you already have done or someone mentioned, you charge controller will most likely handle the amps 3 100 watt panels will put out. . 3 12volt panels in parallel will give you about 15 amps..So, you could get by with a 20 amp charge controller. Good work, but i have a question in my mind. How much power does a 100w solar panel produce per day? And what’s your location?
Instead of the input from the charge controller going to one battery and the output to the inverter coming from the second battery, I think it is better to cross connect them. Like the plus from charge controller connected to pos on the first battery and the neg from the charge controller connected to the neg of the second battery. Agreed. Someone else suggested that but it was wrongly interpreted...
My 100 watt panel runs a 12/24 volt domestic cf50 refrigerator just fine. In a van I take it to baja. I paid $700 for the frig.
Check out all the 12v accessories you can get like ceiling fans and you won't have to have an inverter which isn't very efficient

all gear that you have ,can all use 12v system , you don't even need 110v inventer , coz from 12v to 110v will have some power lost
That's my Dad's solution. Cut the trees down! LOL I didn't get into solar, greenhouses, gardening, to start cutting trees down!
How is the wiring set up from the inverter to the switches? Did you run all the lines through a breaker panel?
You should wire your batteries with plus on one battery and neg on the other battery to distribute the charge evenly between the two to prolong life....
then he also needs to buy a new inverter because you are then running 24v
Thats stupid. Thats in series. You only do that with 6 volt batteries. Unless you really want 24 volts. Then that inverter would smoke. No.. keep doing what your doing. Me? Id get about 6 more panels and 6 more batteries.
