In case anyone was wondering about 9:30 that red inline fuse you can get at auto parts stores such as a napa. The heavy duty ones use 8awg. It's nice when the batteries fit well in the box, good room for any maintenance.

I was standing in an car shop, when 20 feet away a battery blew up from not being vented. Sounded just like a 12 ga shot gun going off. The lid was closed and it didn't vent. Stay safe.

Nice! Next job is to look at the efficiency of the system. Points you may wish to consider:
    1. Your charge controller is rated up to about 72v maximum input, do not run it close to the max. (your car speedo goes to 150mph but you don't drive everywhere at that speed or it will explode!)
    2. These generic MPPT work at their best efficiency when they are running at battery-voltage plus about 6 volts. Any higher and the efficiency drops off. The controller will adjust the panel voltage to what it knows is suitable for maximum power transfer.
    3. Wire the panels in parallel; this will drop the voltage into that happy-zone. The controller will be less likely to fail from cloud-edge spikes.
    4. Cloud-edge spikes are caused by the 'lensing' effect when the sun comes out from behind a cloud. The colder your panels are, the open-circuit voltage will peak higher: At minus 10c the spike may be enough to over-volt your MPPT if you are already close to it's absolute maximum input volts. (Again like your car, if you cruise at 150 mph, then come to a big long dip in the road, you will go over 150 mph and it will go pop).
    5. If you go to 24v battery, you can still keep all those panels in parallel, and your charge-controller will love you for it!
    6. Good luck, be happy!

You can buy ajustable voltage regulators so the panels wont over volt or over amp the mppt box ;)

I got ten years out of my Surrettes, S460's. Then I upgraded to S600's. The older ones are still being used on a smaller separate solar setup. The Surrettes are fantastic. The older ones just need more water, more often . Greetings from Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Not a bad setup. I am not a fan of putting panels on the roof when you have a winter snow climate. I would make an adjustable pivoting frame from the ground where it would be easier to clear snow with a broom and perhaps leave panels in the vertical position so snow will not collect when away from the cabin. Adding 2 more panels would work even better with such a setup, and you can keep your beautiful tree, its a win win idea!

I have a 4 by 8 hot air panel at 75 degrees and it self clears very well. It is steep enough to get some light bounce from the snow on the ground.

I use two six volt golf cart batteries for my boat dock solar system. The batteries cost $86.00 each. They work great. My blowers require 1500 watts each for about four minutes. My 130 watt panel will recharge the batteries fairly quickly.

What I initially did with my system ten years ago when I had a much smaller setup was to get a good battery charger for AAA's, AA's , C's and D's, when you have a surplus of power I would charge a whack of these Low Self Discharge batteries and use them to power LED lamps/flashlights etc. Since you don't want to add another SLA to a properly matched system, this allows you to use the excess power. And ya, those low light levels of Nov and Dec are a killer

  • @freewaylee

NO! Don't cut the tree. Ground mount is easy. The heat in the cabin will also negate the solar benefits....or simply get more panels.

  • @danbaity975

Nice Job. It's obviously not an optimal system, but you have proven that it is still a success. You know what the limitations of the system are and you adjust accordingly. I hope this helps others not be afraid to jump in and do a solar project, even if it may not be an optimal situation. My only other comment for your followers would be to consider AGM Batteries. They do not vent any gasses, do not need to be equalized, and require no maintenance. Rock On NB88

    • @NB88
      @NB88  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

So far very little maintenance of the new batteries, just check the water level once per month and the charge controller automatically takes care of equalization. Thanks for watching.

There is so much more that you can do with extra panels. Don't stop with 470W. With those grid tie panels, just run a wire to a dedicated electrical outlet. Most electronic wall wart chargers will operate at reduced current at 50V DC and above. That is how I charge my phone, 5V power packs and laptop computer. Just takes a little longer. Saves you from having to run an inverter and just costs you an outlet box. Put that old panel in series with that dedicated outlet to give another 18V and that system will work even better when those other panels are partly shaded. I run so many things on wall warts at my camp. That battery box fan would be a good example, running only with sun. Take a look at my power shed I built.

There are 2 you tube channels I watch and both are or have been talking about solar panels and energy, the one is Lumnah Acre's in upstate Maine who are building on a off grid property and they have a house going up and a shop and greenhouse that they are going to build this summer and they just hooked up the wood boiler that's going to heat the house and shop and greenhouse soon to be built and eventually a another house but the one that they have going up is going to be like a lodge where they can process there vegetables and butcher there hogs as it will be a little like a main house for now and a outdoor kitchen when they have there other house up and there shop will be heated by the boiler and they put up a huge length of solar panels south of the house and that's going to supply electricity to everything plus they have put in a backup generator also and the other channel is Raspberry rock and Russell has built a cabin in Canada nearby Ontario I believe but the only way to get to his cabin is by 4 wheeler on a trail and he does a live stream on Friday nights around 7 or 8 PM
You should check out both channels as they are both interesting to watch as he was close to the guy who is building his own cabin by cutting down all his logs and he built a greenhouse last fall and stayed in that while cutting his logs and purchased a sawmill to cut lumber for his cabin cuz lumber was getting to expensive to buy. I can't remember the name of the channel but he had built a cabin and a outhouse and sauna house and outdoor kitchen and some neighbors had moved in from the cities and they were vandalising his property so he bought more ground a ways away and started all over again. You probably know who I'm talking about but I'll find out the name of his channel and let you know who it is and his wife and daughters would come out to the cabin and visit him on weekends as they still live in the cities. Shawn James is the name of the guy and he has a dog Lab with him since day 1 when he moved to the woods and building his cabin and other facilities with old tools like they did in the old days you should watch both or all 3 channels very interesting and informative information he puts out.

What kind of batteries are they. I don't know of any lead acid batteries rated for 1200 cycles at 50% DOD? They must be really good batteries.
I'd like to know more about your batteries because something just doesn't seem right. You state they are 420 amp hour batteries. I kind of question that. There are many ways to rate batteries but it seems the standard for deep cycle batteries is am hours at the 20 hour rate. Now you will see a lot of other ratings that are misleading. For instance, Deka has a 6v deep cycle golf cart battery (GC15) that they advertise as "6 volt 448 Amp golf cart battery." However, if one looks further into the specifications of this battery it is rated at 230 amp hours at the 20 hour rate!!!. The 448 figure is the time in minutes it takes to discharge this battery at the 25 amp rate. Totally different. www.eastpennmanufacturing.com/wp-content/uploads/Deka-Pro-Master-Golf-Car-Flyer-0248.pdf. I don't know what batteries you have but to get a better idea of their real capacity look for the 20 hour rate. I doubt they will be 420 amp hours. If they are let me what kind they are. I want them!

They are Trojan L16s. The documentation that came with them say 1200 at 50. The 20 hr rate is 420. The 100 hr is 467. Energy is 2.8 kwh.

@@NB88 OMG! Those are "kickin" batteries. I bought Trojan also but went with AGM's 220AH, 6volt, model SAGM 06 220. You have basically got double the system I have. We have a remote cabin too. We went a bit different route using mostly 12v lights, water pump etc. We have an inverter but rarely use it. We can find almost any thing we need that runs off 12v due to the RV industry. Our WeBoost cell booster is also 12v powered and works fantastically. No discernible signal to 2 and sometimes 3 bars. We have used a gas refrigerator for 50 years. We are presently on our second one. It is a monster-----17 cubic ft. model (we have 10 individuals for deer season). The other one was only 8 cubic ft. Personally, if I were you I would consider this option over an electrically powered one. We have been really satisfied with our refrigeration. I so enjoy your videos . You feel about your cabin the way I feel about ours. I do wish we had the mechanical equipment you have-----tractor, snow thrower etc. We have a mower and that's about it. I am impressed with what you have done seemingly all by yourself. I was the one who designed and put together our solar system the way you did-----researching, reading, asking questions and finally putting something together. Like you, I have learned a lot since then and, like you, updated the system. It seems like it is a constant work in progress but one that intrigues me. Keep up the great videos.

use your car,,to charge,,in the evening 2 hours or when needed your batteries,,need no solar......put a cable from outside to house battery....thats 200 amps,,charge....no solar can do that....
if you have ,remote control to car,you can start car automatic when low battery.....or get bipper sound low battery,,,you start remote your car.....the north canada has alot of wind
wind is better than solar,,,solar is good for the ecuator line or florida...
