    Great info! I’ve had folks on the Nutrition Mission ask about this brand so I’ll let them know to check it out! A few points…you’ve spilled the beans on Large Breed Adult foods! The industry secret is there’s really no need. It’s really to grab more shelf space on the pet food store shelves. Large breed only matters in the growth stage. The fact AAFCO has no standard for a senior dog or cat is really negligent! Should be illegal! Mineral excesses are the most damaging in that geriatric stage and food companies, as you’ve shown, won’t spend the money to address it properly, because they don’t have to! What’s the point of having a beautiful website, and a nutritionist on staff, and then having such poor nutrient levels????? Keep up the good fight, fighting the TH-cam celebrities! (Though I think you’re becoming one! But the good kind!)

    I’m so glad to have discovered your channel, I’m finding it so helpful and informative. My family said goodbye to our 16.5 year old dog last weekend, and it was so hard. She had been showing many signs of canine cognitive dysfunction and her vet had suggested Purina Bright Mind, between researching that and grieving our dog, it has brought me back into the world of dog food and wanting to understand as much as I can so I can give my 6 year-old dog the best possible diet and longest, healthiest life she can have. I landed on Nutrisource back when I adopted my dog after hours of online research but I realize now that I wasn’t even sure how to really assess a dog food beyond the ingredients and the marketing tricks, so I’m very thankful for your videos as well as pet food puzzle guy for breaking it down.
    I’m strongly considering switching to Hills because the science and research done to back it up is very important to me and of course the nutrient levels- from the info I’ve seen it seems that in general Hills does great with getting the recommended nutrient levels and avoiding excess. I’m wondering if you can provide some insight about the AAFCO statements- in reviewing Hills varieties it seems like many of them do state “formulated” vs tested. With Hills having such a reputation for research, is it safe to assume that the evidence is there to back it up even if the AAFCO statement says formulated? I know you’ve stated that’s not a deal breaker for you and Hills checks off most of my other boxes, but the anxious part of me wants to make sure my dog is getting the best and safest food possible.
    Thank you so much for your videos!

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My understanding is that Hills will feeding trial the majority of the foods but if they’ve one where the formula is the same but just the kibble size is different, they do not. You can always call hills too to ask, they are usually very good with customer questions.

    Love the content and have definitely learned a lot from your videos. I checked out the Small Animal Clinical Nutrition textbook and I don’t know if it’s just a typographical error or what, but the recommended nutrition is the same for both small and large breeds dogs. Could you provide exactly what page you got the large breed puppy nutritional requirements?

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Adult dogs regardless of size have the same nutritional requirements. Large breed puppy requirements are in chapter 17 and 33(specifically for large breed puppies)

      @@AnimalDocRea sorry I was referring to puppies. The way I have interpreted Table 17-1, a large breed puppy needs 22-32% protein and 10-25% fat. Is that correct information?

    I've been binge watching your videos lol I'm so happy I found you. Thank you for educating us on nutrition for our fur babies. I would love to see your review on fancy feast pates for cats. I rescued two cats (mom and daughter) two years ago. I've given them everything from raw to Hills prescription. After listening to your views on raw, I immediately stopped feeding raw, so now we're back to square one lol. I'm here in Canada I was also feeding Carna4 but now I'm looking for budget friendly options on wet and dry food.I know you don't recommend brands which I totally understand, but if you could do fancy feast that would so much appreciated. Thank you again! :)))

    Ty for your review… I recently switched from blue buffalo to Nutrisource grain free for my 3yr old Boston Terrier due to food refusal & random vomiting, I had heard about the dog food issue listed below:
    “January 18, 2024
    Pet parent consumer reports of bloody diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, food refusal, feeding:
    - 4Health
    - Orijen
    - Acana
    - Organix
    - Blue Buffalo - Pure Balance
    - Hill's
    - Purina
    - Instinct
    - Royal Canin
    - Kirkland
    - Stella & Chewy's
    - Merrick
    - Taste of the Wild”…
    But kept my 13yr old Boston Terrier on Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind 7+ Chicken & Rice Formula with Probiotics Senior Dry Dog.
    Is there a better options that won’t break the bank…!?!

    Thank you so much for the breakdown. I have been feeding my now 10 month old puppy the small puppy formula. Your explanation of the minerals was excellent, and as for protein, i now know where the fish smell was been coming from. Oh, so here i go again on the quest for a healthy diet for my lil' man. I do have to say we switched from Purina Puppy(which he was on when I got him.) On the Purina stools were soft to mushy. This food has been great for consistent, firm, well formed stools. Fingers crossed to find something better. Thanks again!

    Great info! This comment isn't geared to this video, but I have questions about commercially prepared raw dog food diets and minerals. I understand the gold standard range for calcium and phosphorus in kibble - but is there a difference when calculating it for a raw diet? Is there a video showing how to calculate it? Is the absorption of the minerals different when the minerals are from a raw diet? In other words, is the pup able to absorb all the minerals from the raw diet without there being excess that may possibly ruin their organs?

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I recommend going to ACVN.org and get a consultation with a boarded veterinary nutritionist to help you formulate for your pet's needs. I believe some can do it remote. That is the only way you can do a proper raw or home cooked diet because it is very complicated as you can see by your questions. In my opinion, if you don't have home cooked diets formulated professionally by a ACVN diplomate, then you are more than likely doing more harm than good. The fees are minimal compared to some of these boutique brand and the final result is tailored to you and your pet.

My boy was being fed an all life stage food by the breeder that was not for growth of large breeds. Not being very educated at the time I continued the food but did ask my vet who also said it was ok. About 7 months old the statement on the bag caught my eye and I immediately changed him to large breed puppy food until 18 months and have been research nuts since lol.
