Another great video and an awesome tree. Peter I had never heard of root cuttings until watching your video. This year I have had about a dozen root cuttings take off that I made during repotting season. Wisteria, elm, and maple. It really is a valuable piece of knowledge thanks so much.
I love it when you go at the plant with chisels and axes and then say you don't want to stress it too much. 😊 I really like the end result though! Wonderful!

When I see one I tell myself this is undoubtedly my favorite Peter video, but that doesn't last long, until the surprise of the next job. At first I thought there was plenty of the second branch, but then I understood that what makes it special is the repetition of the movement pattern.

I cannot help wondering if the process would have been easier if you used a water jet to get rid of most of the soil first. my reasoning being, a water jet would have removed all the soil with little or no damage to the roots allowing you to separate the roots and the plants by cutting them under direct vision.
I've taken a few air-layerings of hawthorn recently. As thick as my arm and covered in flaky bark. They'll obviously need to grow out over a tile in the ground for a few years but hopefully I'll get a similar, instant-ish result.
Those little natural hollows in the tree, give such character! IThey spoke to me. ❤️ they said “HAPPY HOLLOWEEN’ ! Perhaps I could request a video on how to create Hollows. Or a story of there process of creation please? 🙏
No, the video is a couple of months old already as Peter Chan already said in a comment a few above yours. And take a look at one of his latest videos where he rightfully said that it is a bad idea to repot a tree in the summer or every year. Bonsais can grow for quite a while in the same pot without any problems. Only trees with a lot of root growth or younger trees need to be repotted more often than old and mature trees. Some can even grow for 5-10 years or longer in the same pot.
Learned so much from you today. Have a question about all the sawing and hammering away at the roots. Do you ever use a water hose and separate roots that way? I have done it myself, since I am not so strong and have no associates to help me. Have not noticed any ill effects so far. Thank you for providing so much information.🙋♀️
Mr. Peter Chan, thank you for your sphagnum moss trick! It works like a miracle on the stressed trees and my collected yamadori trees. But what do you do with the sphagnum moss when the tree has recovered and the sphagnum is full of new roots? Do you remove it and replace with bonsai soil or just leave the sphagnum until it degrades?

It seems like a rather wet mix with both the peat substitute (is that coir?) and the sphagnum. In Surrey's humid climate how often do you water this tree?
I just have to ask: that huge clump bursting the plastic pot and trying it tease the thing out ... wouldn't it be easier to soak the whole thing and then pull it apart?

I have a hawthorn in my yard that at put out seedling at an incredible rate. I can't stand to toss waste them either. I have no idea what I'm going to do with so many. Bonsai away I guess- 😄
Most of the Roseacea genus (Roses, Apple, Cotoneaster, Quince, Hawthorn etc) are prone to Rust, Blackspot and mildew. You have just got to spray it with the appropriate chemical to control these diseases.
May i ask why did you repot this hawthorn in the middle of summer (July?)? I guess you did it just a few days ago? Usually i repot hawthorns in march/april or late august/early september and now i am a bit confused about the best timing ...
He said in another comment that it has been a few months since he filmed this video, and both trees are doing well, so I think you must be repotting hawthorns at the correct time 😊

My guess is that this video was filmed between mid-April and May, but it was done so with a mixture of common sense and judgement from past experience. The maples in the background of the potting bench all appear to be green. In the insect pest spraying video (6th April), the maples were on the cusp of turning completely green. So, the earliest it could be when the hawthorn video was filmed is around mid-April. But, the weather conditions in the UK have been quite odd this year. Many gardeners have reported that spring was set back a month (meaning that it was colder for a longer spell than normal). I have noticed this myself from harvesting my plum trees - in previous years plum picking would take place around the third week of June but this year they need about 2-3 weeks more before they are ready to be picked.
The hawthorns that grow here in California have nasty thorns, and if one tried to manhandle them bare-handed as in the video one would be sorry! Are English hawthorns different in that regard?

My Hawthorne gets bad Cedar Quince rust every year, is there a recommended chemical to remove the rust, or protect the tree from getting it?

Is it always necessary to wire the bonsai to the pot? And why does it have to be wired to the pot?
They wires them in to stop the tree from falling out in bad weather ect so the tree doesn't get damaged until it roots its self in the pot

This was filmed earlier, sometimes they will tell you when it was filmed.
