I love everything about this. He has an amazing style that unfortunatley some people can't grasp. Even if he didn't use vibrato, he could still hit a note dead steady and in tune, which completely amazes me. Like near the end, some of the notes he held were just amazing.
I remember watching this in 2006 and thinking "wow this really sucks," and I just remembered how bad I thought it was and looked it up. It isn't really that bad.
most the people who bash devendra probably just fail to see his true soulful artistry. he's done nothing but be himself and make art of life, in the process becoming truly a revelation. he should be commended for his bravery of spirit and self and love.
WOW A-MA-ZING!! HOW HE IMMEDIETLY BEGINS TO GO IN HIS MUSICAL TRANCE WAVING HIS ARMS WITH EMOTION AND HIS VIRBRATO REALEASING SWEET NOTES OF TRUTH AND MUCH MUCH MORE...
Devendra is in no way pretentious, he's just very passionate about his music. We should be glad there are people who are as intense about their music.I've met him backstage at a few of his shows and he is the kindest, most down-to-earth person I've ever met.
"Pretentious" is the most overkilled word in any comment on the internet. If you'll actually look in your dictionary you'll see it's associated with arrogance. There's nothing arrogant about Devendra at all. He's not trying to be deep. He is a weird-ass man-child. He is what he is; he doesn't call himself a genius. He's probably the most humble musician out there right now. Watch any interview of his. He talks to everyone like he's friends with them. It's art because it's honest.
(@quantumriian It's a joyous lullabye. I read that sugar is spread on the floor to make a sound while they dance/shake. They pawned everything to party. But depression, yes.) He is making an interpretation, not a rendition. It's called art. Fantastic. First time I see him. I just skim-read the comments. I don't understand how anyone can see it as racist. This guy obviously read up on Cotten, and seems to respect her work. But it's an interpretation.
One thing I agree with you on, is humorous comments are rarely well-received. It can be disheartening at times. I think people just take them too seriously. I often question why I even read them, yet here I am posting one.
I searched "Shake Sugaree" looking for some close harmony and good fingerpicking, and I got this. That might explain some of the negative comments posted here. I don't condemn anyone for liking this, but it was so far from what I was looking for I think I entered another universe. And I read that he "covers" "Copper Kettle" too? I might have to look for it just to see what he did to it.
You spelled pretentious wrong. Personally, I think it's pretentious to call someone pretentious when you don't know how to spell pretentious. (pretentious; attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc, than is actually possessed.) Besides being onstage is basically the definition of "Hey look at me..." That's like calling an actor a 'phony'.
this performance is so special to me, it goes beyond a liking, or longing, its pure sentiment, understand and passion. Not much else can top it for me.
I appreciate what this artist is trying for here, it just felt a little force this time around. He's very emotional and dramatic, perhaps he's feeling a bit self conscience as happens to those who stand on the threshold of something real for a change. Anyway I liked his rendition of Elizabeth Cotten's song Shake Sugaree.
Fantastic easy listening and wonderful songwriting....not at all potential chart topper but what do you expect with rapcrap and high school musical dominating the music scene. He's very talented and a looker, also an interesting performer...brava.
and for sure hes not the only one that loves what hes doing cause me and thousands of others lone what hes doing ! and of course its beautiful! art its complex mate! maight be sad happy or whatevr but is definetelly beautifull! :)
@homiedude333 He just has such a beautiful voice and this sort of aura to him that's unexplainable. When he sings in spanish it makes me want to cry and his lyrics in english are so well thought out and expressive. THAT is why people like Devendra
I was hitting my bong when I read this, I choked. LOL you're dead on. I wouldn't say I'm a big fan of his music or anything, but I really enjoy his style & the way he sings.. it's very refreshing. And lyrically, he's very good.. But this as you put it "acting like a bad guy in a disney movie" has got to go.
I love everything about this. He has an amazing style that unfortunatley some people can't grasp. Even if he didn't use vibrato, he could still hit a note dead steady and in tune, which completely amazes me. Like near the end, some of the notes he held were just amazing.
This been breaking my heart for over 10 yrs now

@@Lilskee95 What a lovely dedication to Elizabeth Cotton (and her granddaughter!) Which lyrics did you get tattooed if you don't mind me asking?
@@VideoSaySo “Im gonna go to Heaven in a split-pea shell” 💙💙💙
Wild that I remember watching and posting this to my MySpace like 15 years ago and it’s STILL HERE. god I feel old.
I remember watching this in 2006 and thinking "wow this really sucks," and I just remembered how bad I thought it was and looked it up. It isn't really that bad.

Probably the truest cover of Cotten's "Sugaree" i've ever heard. Kudos to Devendra for recreating the original intent of the song.

he's got my attention,,,and the song is beautifull...but,,,yes when you look at him ,,,,he seems to be a french piano female teacher.
