5 historical FACTS about MACHICO - The first landing of Madeira

- In July 1419, João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão "das ilhas" landed on the beautiful beach of Machico. Thus began the glorious epic of Portuguese discoveries. Here, the first mass in Madeira was celebrated by Franciscan priests on the day of the Visitation of Saint Isabel (July 2), who accompanied the expedition as a thanksgiving and rejoicing for the discovery.
Many hypotheses have been raised about the origin of the name Machico. The most well-known, and no less controversial, lies in the romantic legend of the ill-fated English lovers Robert Machim and Anne d'Arfet. The name of this locality seems to come from a corruption of the word 'Machim'.

I actually stayed next to the yellow fort in Machico in an apartment above Portas Verdes 2 years ago where I savoured my 2nd ever poncha! The first was a complimentary treat at the airport as there was a welcome reception for the first ever Ryanair flight from Dublin which I was on.
I found that history fascinating & always learn something new about the Pearl in your vlogs! By the way I spotted Porto Santo in the far distance on a clear late afternoon at Rocha do Navio a couple of years back too. Would you happen to know if the cable car is back in action there?
Also on Lisa's walking tour which I'm interested in going on, does she welcome vloggers as long as they're not going to film the whole tour, but just small segments?

I love Machico. I stayed there from the 5th until the 19th February and the weather was very kind.

Thanks Jeff and Hit the Road team for anther interesting video. I lived in Machico for 5 months, did daily hikes in the hills. The people of Machico are warm and wonderful and the beach is great to swim in most days.

I have to ask Jeff, is the way you pronounce Madeira a SA way or a Portuguese way? Asking for a friend 😂
Lol I used to say “Madera” cause of my South African upbringing, we also well known for saying “Ibiza” wrong so ya …
But I found I annoyed some people by not pronouncing it “in Portuguese” so now it’s kinda coming out mainly like that but sometimes not so ya who knows? Lol you can also say “madeera” and be British about it 😂😂😂

faço sempre confusão com o machico e o caniço, penso sempre que o machico vem primeiro que o machico, mas é ao contrario. todas as vezes que decidi ir ao machico, estava mau tempo... a ultima vez foi o primeiro dia da tempestade de oscar, estava a chover bastante... 😅, mas fui à praia! 🤣
