Right on time Rich. I'm just off The Edge and I was pleasantly surprised no issues at all with the internet no matter what country we were in or at sea.
On cruise ships, the data has to be transmitted to satellites which then beam the data back to earth. This is not cheap. In a normal internet plan, the data is just transmitted by a cable. This cable may be optical fiber, telephone cable, or copper cable depending on your internet plan.
Good info. We used Starlink on a southern Caribbean sailing Beyond and had similar speed/connectivity issues. It did not measure up to the WI-FI we've used on other Celebrity or Royal Caribbean ships.
Hey guys, I really love that you guys put in the work to keep us informed. I see you can enjoy at the same time 1:50. Keep the content coming. With you guy's all the way! 👍
Internet won't work great on such a large ship because there are thousands of passengers. So you're sharing the speed with so many other people. Starlink is definitely faster than whatever came before but it doesn't matter because when the capacity increases, so does the consumption. The more capacity the ship has, the more people get it, thus keeping it slow. A plane with Starlink would likely see much bigger difference because there's alot less people.
Version 2 of Starlink satellites should fix a lot of these issues with space lasers and faster communication between satellites with no ground station needed
Thanks Rich. I was on the Ruby Princess in January and again in March this year. The internet was just as crappy. I saw another cruiser complaining because he could not upload a pdf file for work. For over $100 a week we should be getting giga speed. Wifi at sea is not worth it to me.
When Starlink first rolled out, some people were getting insanely good speeds. However in the past few months it seems like something has changed and the speeds are downright terrible much of the time now. No one can quite figure out if Royal did something or if it’s a starlink issue.
To be fair, cruise ship internet has improved over the years. I just took a cruise, and I often had connectivity issues. The job gets done eventually, but nothing compares to online fiber, IMHO.
I always debate where or not to get ship WiFi. I usually just do the day to day on carnival since my goal is for me and my teenagers to disconnect and chill. That way I only use it if I need it. But that’s not good if you paid a lot of money for ship WiFi in order to work.

hey bud, appreciate the video. going on a cruise next month, the same route but leaving from Jersey. On the StarLink website, it currently has standard and flat high-performance hardware. Which one did you guys test for this video?
Not surprised. Starlink isn't some magical solution to the limitations of satellite internet, especially on a huge cruise ship with several thousand people, many of whom are also trying to use the internet.
I feel like unless you work remotely and rely on being always connected for video chats streaming etc and it’s how you work I say it’s a vacation and you should enjoy the trip! But I can understand if it’s to stay connected to loved ones etc but every time I’m on vacation other then photos I hardly use my phone
Here is my suggestion. Don’t waste your time trying to upload via satellite internet. It is always super slow. Instead, upload at the ports via cellular data or via land based Wi-Fi. As for downloading, I was able to watch TH-cam and do video chat on Facebook messenger without any issues on the Symphony of the Seas in December 2022.
Great video, but just wanted to mention that internet speed is measured in megabits per second, not megabytes per second. There are 8 bits in a byte. :)
Princess Cruises lousy WiFi service I just went on the Discovery Princess in the first week of January 2024, and while the ship itself was spectacular, Both my wife and I caught and tested positive for COVID by the 4th day. Also there were some other disappointments: WiFi: They brag in their advertisements that they have the BEST WiFi in the industry. I beg to differ. They HAD; then they started using Starlink internet services and NOW their WiFi speed the slowest I have seen. It’s all over the internet too. The Ruby Princess had 300mps during our last cruise. The Princess Discovery had 3 mps (THREE MPS)!!! What a ripoff! 100 times slower than Ruby. And THEY LIE about Discovery Princess having the best WiFi at sea!! Beer Selection: They quit serving Grolsch beer, and have no other Pilsner to replace it. PAY $$$ for Bow Access: There is NO bow access to look forward from unless you pay $40 PER DAY to enter the “Sanctuary” at the front of the ship. Even on the Promenade deck, where most ships allow jogging around the bow, is blocked up front.
@@aRICHandJAZZYLifethats not why lol. Reason is you are sharing it with hundreds to possibly thousands of other people doing tasks like browsing Reddit twitter ig etc
Wow the internet being this slow is crazy. Especially with high hours the internet plans are. I usual just get the Social media package just to be able to message back home and surf but these plans are too high to not work like it should.
That whole "it works better near land" is completely untrue. It's pointing up at satellites. It doesn't matter if you're near land or not. In fact, to take it one step further out at sea should be faster. The reason is because there are fewer users downloading from the same satellites when you're at sea because no one else is around.
@@aRICHandJAZZYLifestarlink over the sea doesn’t have any base stations. Each satellite has a laser to connect to another satellites, its like a mesh network, it may go through 2-7 sats or even more before reaching a ground station.
I was on the Celebrity Beyond in March. Starlink sucks with uploads. Period. Wi-Fi calling was garbled. Never had that issue pre Starlink on other cruise lines. Downloads were spotty. Constant buffering watching Netflix at night. I ended up watching the tv at night instead. Which also sucked. On Demand was horrible. Celebrity did not impress me in the tech area. Ship was stunning however.
this is why i don't go on Cruise Ships internet is slow i need fast internet now on a plane i don't need internet i'm not spend a week on a plane i know going to be on dry land and get fast internet
This was such a chill and cool video.. yet informative. Well done, Rich. Enjoyed it
Glad you enjoyed it!
Right on time Rich. I'm just off The Edge and I was pleasantly surprised no issues at all with the internet no matter what country we were in or at sea.
Wow, nice!
The internet prices are getting out hand, these cruise lines should be ashamed charging so much smh.
Yes we just paid $350 on Norwegian for a 5 night sailing last week

they are cheaping out, obviously...wait for the "pay for high speed internet" offer

P And O Cruises getting ready for Starlink
Down load 58 mbp and upload 3.85 Mbps

So which Royal Caribbean cruise lines are the best? Is this Ruby Princess and Princess Discovery connected to Royal Caribbean?

It worked well when only one or two ships had it. Too many users are connected to the tiny satellites now.
