Angus, I wrote an article about the Ollo back in 2016 for a newsletter published by my local chapter of the American Institute of Architects. I was skeptical then and still am that this product will ever ship. I appreciate hearing your unbiased views on Kickstarter campaigns and this one in particular. You do good work!

I had money pledged on kickstarter for the Olo ~1.5 years ago?, saw your video and did a little research myself and ended up cancelling it before the campaign ended. Glad I did.
It's funny, I ran across your videos last year when I first heard about OLO and at the time I also ran across the ONO name and their pitch as well and thought "Wow, they've got competition already, and they even have a similar name!", I had no idea they were the same company until now.
I don't know if i'm crazy but smartphones with an lcd/ips display have backlight always on behind every pixel, so won't the part that isn't suppose to cure also cure?
I'm a backer for this, and for me, it comes down to this. It's only $99. I spend more that that on comics in a week or two and I really want it to succeed. If not, I can afford to lose the money and if does ship and it works, this will be an awesome portable printer and my first SLA printer. I DO have to admit, the Photon does have my interest. If the ONO really doesn't ship, or if doesn't do a good enough job, I'll have to give it a serious look. PS: I know the guy who's comment you highlighted. He's something of a fan of Maker's Muse. He's going to be beside himself. :)
After seeing a unboxing of the little ono and what it printed out it seems interesting enough though I am wondering what I should get first, The Spark maker, The Anycubic-photon or the ONO the only concern for the ono is screen burn-in for my oled phones.
Hi Angus this is Dennis, thanks for the review of ONO we are shipping the first commercial units at the moment and catching up with sending out the backer/pre-order units, would be very happy to give you an overview of the project and some of the difficulties faced during the development. Would you be interested in having a chat it might be an interesting interview to give people some idea of just how difficult it is to bring a Kickstarter project to life even with substantial funding.
I have no interest in talking to your company. As far as I am concerned you have scammed your backers until they receive their 3 year overdue product - www.kickstarter.com/projects/olo3d/olo-the-first-ever-smartphone-3d-printer/comments
Oh tell me Dennis if I were to say order the ONO from here www.boloberry.com/en/product/ono-3d-printer/ Would there be a wait or are they already in production? Also how goes the orders for the backers? Have they been fulfilled yet?
I'm curious about the Photon - but I'll wait until after your review. I like your analysis and how you come to your opinions, so I choose to trust what you say. Looking forward to that possible review.
It was definitely an interesting idea. I saw them at NYMF too and I was actually quite impressed with their samples they had out, including the flexi resin. Of course while I was there I didn't see a single part come off a printer. If they can actually deliver, I still may consider it just for fun.
I want to thank you for introducing me to PTEG.. WOW amazing stuff Not ever going back to PLA or ABS.. Love it.. Thanks for encouraging me to getting into it.
Funny story. I started building a Mendel i1 when the "clonedel" resin parts came out. I was buying parts a few at a time and didn't really get it built until the Ono came out. At that point I was having issues with the printer that I needed new parts printed so that I could finish (the x and y carriage parts in the clonedel had way too much slop to be useful) so I figured I'd invest in the Ono and have a second working printer. This thing too so long that I found other people at work had picked up the hobby and I asked them to run the parts off for me. So my Mendel i1 works (usually...) and I have this kickstarter sitting out there doing nothing. Might get a CR-10 or CR-10 mini. the Mendel i1 was great to learn with, but man it's unreliable. That and it seem to be impossible lately to find any recent upgrades for the machine. An Antlabs BLTouch mount has been impossible to find.
This young man is good. He would add some journalist skills to get even better to present his findings and thoughts. Promising Angus with an interesting potential
Glad I pulled out before campaign was over, to many unanswered questions, out of all the 3d printer campaigns I have backed, Flux Delta is the only one that has stood by their product and still continue to make improvements and upgrades years later.
Im trying to decide between the moai and the anycubic photon, want to use it to print miniatures etc. I know the Moai prints in higher detail but for a 700$ difference the Photon seems to come decently close and im just wondering if that small difference on a 28mm miniature after its been painted will even be at all noticeable. Just wondering if you has any advice or thoughts? Thanks
The prints made by the photon are amazingly detailed, 3D Maker Noob made a video where he compares Moai prints and Photon prints. Another advantage is that you can print ten miniatures, it will take same time as a single one, because it is curing based on LCD, takes same time to cure whatever is displayed on LCD ( technically the LCD is used to mask the UV light ), while a laser has to trace every layer, more object more tracing.
Every few months I‘m checking the ONO Kickstarter to see if they have shipped my printer. I think it is a scam, but after all I have to thank it. It was ONO that introduced me to the 3D printer scene. Until that point I thought 3D printers were still not worth it and a very new technology, but for that price point I didn‘t mind and thought: lets see what comes of it.
Lease review the M3D pro Kickstarter campaign.. I know they struggled to get printers delivered... In fact I backed the project and finally gave up and list faith and bought a CR-10 and I am very happy with that printer
I am glad that someone finally speakup, thanks so much. I am just another angry backer. I will just throw it to the trash even I ever get the dxxm thing. One thing that you haven't mention is that without the proprietary cloud base app, this thing is just a paper weight. There are no words about the software till now, so you still trust them?
It's just too ironic of a name. They started as dick's ( olo ) then realized, "Oh no that's a bad name!" * other guy in the marketing development team says *, "that's it! ONO! that's our new name! The ironic crowd will love it just for the name!"
I would love for you to get in touch with kodama about their obsidian 3D printer campaign. Its not been as long as the Oh-NO but for a FMD printer it's taking awfully long. Originally when they started the campaign a budget 3D printer with all those bells and whistles was great! But FMD printers have gotten so cheap that it's unbelievable. For pretty much the same price a monoprice select mini v2 is a great example. Love your videos! Thanks
How about a follow-up on the Obsidian, as far as your take on how realistic their price points are, problems that they’re going to have beat to ship, and a wild guess about when it might ship?
I really hope I get my obsidian soon. I don't think I'd do a kickstarter again, just waiting a few months and you'll get something as good with no risk
There is the T3D printer that is the same principle as the ONO but that has already started to ship two months ago (for the prototype). I've got a prototype, actually planning a very quick post on my first print with it. It's really not bad for a smartphone 3d printer and for the prototype! You should check it!
New update: FCC and New Phones Posted by OLO 3D Inc. (Creator) Hey guys, We heard back from UL again on the latest test. Unfortunately, the printers failed the FCC test by just 5%. This is a hard blow to us, and we know to you as well. We knew that the FCC tests were more stringent than the EMC tests, but testing for FCC compliance externally would have taken as long as getting the results from UL directly. We had hoped that with the positive EMC results, we would be fine, but alas, that was not the case. We had the test printers shipped back to us from UL, so that we could investigate exactly what happened. We have spent the last week designing a few different solutions that would allow a relatively quick fix without touching the board. We are finishing to outfit the solutions on the printers, and next week, we will be able to test them. Whichever solution has the most promising results is the one we will ship back to UL for testing by the end of next week. Phone Compatibility As for concerns about the compatibility with newer phones such as the iPhone X and Samsung Note 8, we have found no compatibility issues with printing. That was precisely the point of making sure the new board would continue to work, because the old version would have been obsolete with these phones. If the phone does not have a headphone jack, you will need an adapter, but that is the only drawback. However, these phones (and others) with OLED screens have issues with burn-in (www.phonearena.com/news/Display-burn-in-tests_id101247) that previous phones did not. The images during printing are only on for a few seconds or minutes (depending on the printing mode), with a black screen in between. This black screen gives the pixels a break in the same way that a changing image does, so the stress on them is much less than something like the navigation or status bars that are always present whenever the screen is on. Through our own tests with both LCD and OLED/AMOLED screens, we have not seen any burn-in issues. However, we have not extensively tested these newer phones for months like we have for others. The ONO Team
I also put your video up on the facebook group, mostly talking about the daylight cure resins and wondering if they could be used in a UV dlp/sla printer for super fast prints. I suspect they would end up overcuring, especially on the underside where the resin tends to pool.
Hi, can you do a similar update /reveiw on the Kodama Obsidian 3D Printer? I'm interested in buying but would like to know the quality of the actual delivered product. Thanks a lot!
I checked in on this a couple weeks ago and it said the product was 1 month away from shipping in Q2 2019. I check again today and the Shopify website is unavailable
What are your thoughts about the SLA company Carbon? I found them when I started looking up SLA printing, looks really cool, but I don't know if the stuff I'm seeing about them is just hyped up or whatever.
I'm an ONO backer and am glad that that they are only into me for $200 or so. How about review on some of the other DLP or SLA printers out there like the D7, UNIX Slash, or an update on the Moai?
Reminds me of the time Microsoft launched an iPod competitor and called it Zune, like "tune". Oblivious to its meaning in Hebrew. Which I cannot say here because TH-cam will probably filter me but it starts with an F. Though here it's ENGLISH, they should've known better. I suppose that with their accents it may have sounded differently. Maybe.
For me, I’m sticking with my FDM CR 10S, at least I can abort a print if the excrement hits the rotary air impeller. Also the large build area. Files and sandpaper are cheap to finish off the print. But there are some people who want or need the exceptional resolution of a sls printer. For those people I hope the price drops as low as possible.
Is there no non-toxic liquid/goop that can be solidified with a laser or something? Maybe something that reacts to heat instead of directly reacting to light, and have a maser or whatever focused and moved around like with a FDM extruder?
Not that it's the same type of resin but I've seen light cured resins for composite constructions (mainly fiberglass). So far, I've stuck with the traditional type of resins.
Don't they use something like that for some orthodontic glue or something? I remember back when I was getting a chipped tooth fixed, the doc would put the stuff in place, then bring down an orange faceshield, tell me to close my eyes, and bring a wand with strong purple light to touch the teeth.
A friend of mine backed it and said that the UL testing is required for items being sold assembled in the USA. That said the time it has taken is a tad concerning... i wonder if UL tests are publicly searchable?
You can check at www.ul.com ... but I didn't find anything. I expect that unless you desire to release the information it is private. UL testing is typically done to be pre-emptive in keeping lawsuits away, unless certification testing is required in a particular area (according to my poor understanding of the field)
I backed this (and the hot mess that was the tiko) while the ONO team has been semi consistent in their updates, their lack of interaction with their backers has been undeniably suspect. If I ever get this machine I'll be surprised, but really don't have high hopes for it. Learn from my mistakes and just buy a printer that has been tested and proven. You might pay a little more but it's better in the long run. Kickstarter is definitely not a store and is more so the wild west for technology. At the end of the day I just got a monoprice maker select v.2 and couldn't be happier with it.
So... i don't know what the bottom of the container is made of. It sounds like it's a relatively thin film, however... If it holds it resin reliably then this is a pretty cool introduction gadget to 3D-printing. Other than that, it's obviously not for serious, hardcore, tens of hours of printing.
At 6:40 the image on the phone is bigger than the ONO cured resin yet the eyes look the same size. Also, the previous view of the phone underneath shows white around the skull, which doesn't appear as cured resin. What happan?
I was impressed by what I saw in NYC, though it seemed like they still had a lot of excuses. I really wish they would just release what they have to the folks with limited phone support and then work on pushing out software updates or else they're just going to get left in the dust as higher quality printers come out for a lower price point.
The thing most of the commenters don't understand is the genuine struggle that comes from doing this kind of thing. They believe it's so easy to just take your design, show it off, then take the funding you received and make enough for everyone. What every single one of them doesn't account for is the fact that things happen. There will be events that come up that will change the original plan and the creators need to be able to account for that. Now, I have to admit, ONO did not do a very good job at communicating the issues they were having (because that would drive away potential customers), and that's why you see so many updates lately. People complained that ONO wasn't being open enough with their problems. To top it off, it seriously wasn't until recently that they finalized their board design and sent it off to be tested. This is the other part the backers don't understand. The testers don't just take the board and look and say it's ok, they really go into depth testing it under many conditions to make sure it's safe. All that testing takes time, and at this stage in the process the only thing ONO can do is wait for the results.
I think it is less that they don't understand these things as it is that any responsible person should be taking variables into account before they post something and accept millions of dollars of other peoples money. Too many people are too cavalier about the whole Kickstarter thing and think they can just have a light bulb moment and go get tons of money and everything will just be ok without them doing the work before they take on that kind of commitment. I'm not saying that's what happened to ONO as I haven't followed it and have no idea but it has and does happen all the time with other campaigns and unfortunately it often ends with investors getting burned.
In this specific instance they really have been trying to get their product into the hands of the people who paid. The fact that they were still designing their product when they launched the campaign is what caused most of their problems. If they started the same campaign in its current state they would probably get off just fine. ONO is probably ready to ship a load of devices, they are just waiting for the certification in order to do so.
Yes it wasn't designed when they started but it is now. Like I said if they waited until right now to start it would've gone just fine, ship exactly on time and everyone's happy.
567legodude on kickstarter, if you make campain, your expected to have working prototype. Croudfunding is to make mass production possible not for creating proof of concept as a final result.
Look, late-development issues happen, but there has always been doubt that they completed even the proof of concept prototyping stage and weren't just touring with a bunch of nonfunctional mockups and LYING to people's faces. They likely/possibly presented lasercut items and items taken off the Form2 as items printed on their printer when it couldn't do anything at all. They never produced a live print that wasn't completely useless (uh, a single layer cure of a grayscale image, WHAT THE HELL?) or unedited video. They are not entirely unlikely to be scammers, who have a project that might or might not work ever at all, while telling a bold faced lie about trivial late-development issues like having to scrap a little simple board and run it through cert. You know full well that these things take time, but who is to say that they aren't simply stalling for time?
Angus, having worked with resins for 38 years and know about odor, set up times, and contact issues. Why cant they use less toxic resins.? With the ones on the market now do you need fresh air supply, PPE etc. Ralph
Printers that use lasers like Moai or Formlabs have higher resolution than printers that use projection but I think they are faster as they can project the entire layer at once.
I’m a backer of the ono. I was really looking forward to playing with it in september/october about 2 years ago. Still would like my product. Was going to show my dentist by printing a tooth. My dentist has since retired. There is even a running joke on the podcast im on about the ono printer. Lets say i’ve turned my disappointment in ono into something more productive.
My understanding is you basically go into airplane mode when running the printer. At least that is what was communicated in some of the Kickstarter supporter inormation.
3D printing is incompatible with having friends that could possibly call you. You're just making up shit to make the company look bad, but it doesn't need that, it can make itself look bad on its own.
I knew it was bound to fail when I first saw it. My first thought was "Why on earth would you overcomplicate things by attempting to create a product that can work with ANY phone?" It is a completely impractical to do so. Just add another hundred bucks to the price and put your own damn cheap LCD in it. It's hard enough getting a printer to work correctly and consistently, adding a huge problem like that to solve on top of everything else is really just begging to fail.
I am an Obsidian 3D supporter. Thought well of them but after the latest 'update', slash comment, not impressed. Do you have any comment about the Obsidian or the staff they have had leave?
Angus, have you looked at the Bean SLA 3D printer from Kudo3D? It also uses the LCD screen technology and was successfully funded on Kickstarter a while ago. Any thoughts? Comments?
whoa whoa so besides the moai theres even more dlp sla resin printers dude.....you should totes make a news topical style video on these and then maybe the companies may lend you a machine cos we(the fans) will probably be sharing that video idk just a thought. im super tempted now since its around 500usd or like what under 6-700aud which is definitely within budget range for me and its resin so super details for miniatures and scale models. dammit angus bringing back that 3d printing fire. random side note after year and half with anet a8 the power supply decided to neck itself by shortage luckily the board and any electronicals didnt follow and new psu with integrated fan is working great again. for any random anet a8 user got eTopxizu 12V 30A Dc Universal Regulated Switching Power Supply 360W For Cctv, Radio, Computer Project from amazon au
I've actually been rejecting a lot of them. The reason is they are incredibly, incredibly messy and smelly. It's nothing like running an FDM system and honestly I've got little interest wrestling with a low low cost resin system. The Photon has me interested, so I'll most likely give that one a go. The form 2 was nothing short of incredible as you'd expect for the price but the clean up is still messy and involves nasty chemicals, gloves and safety gear.
thanks for readjusting my expectations and please do with the photon ive got an eagle eye on it now after checking 3dprinting noob and nexi. i usually deal with resin and silicone castings which have little smell except for this one polyurethane resin from barnes used for making wheels one time, if this dlp/sla resin smells anything like it ill keep that in mind.

After seeing a unboxing of the little ono and what it printed out it seems interesting enough though I am wondering what I should get first, The Spark maker, The Anycubic-photon or the ONO the only concern for the ono is screen burn-in for my oled phones.
you should have saved this a week so you could have said "in march 2016, and now were in march 2018"
I HIGHLY recommend the Anycubic Photon too. The level of detail it is incredible. A bargain for the price I paid.
Thanks Angus. We were just talking about this yesterday.
When they changed the name of the product to "Oh No!", i think it's really time to get worried.
I think the name 'oh no!' is already trademarked :P
Yay for kickstarter videos! Thank you!
When I checked 5 years ago, UL test was $40k per test. And takes lots of time.
Just do like the Chinese do and put the symbol on the product with no testing and save $40+k. ;p
here we are, 3 years later and they still haven't shipped to backers, yet you can buy them on boloberry.
How did your Flux Delta perform?
This is the perfect situation to tell someone about when they think about backing something on Kickstarter.
Thanks for your advice!
“Animals, y’know, pets, or kids.” As a parent, let me just say: yep.
Look at the Snapmaker. Mine is arriving this Tuesday. Example of one that fulfilled their backers. It’s also a laser cutter, and CNC.
Did you ever get your Obsidian 3d printer?
There is the T3D printer that is the same principle as the ONO but that has already started to ship two months ago (for the prototype).
I've got a prototype, actually planning a very quick post on my first print with it.
It's really not bad for a smartphone 3d printer and for the prototype!
You should check it!
Oh this looks interesting I just looked at their website and the results looks nice. Did you order one? And if so how well does it work for you?
New update: FCC and New Phones
Posted by OLO 3D Inc. (Creator)
Hey guys,
We heard back from UL again on the latest test.
Phone Compatibility
As for concerns about the compatibility with newer phones such as the iPhone X and Samsung Note 8, we have found no compatibility issues with printing.
How about an update video? :)
Waiting for my anycubic photon to ship from aliexpress, ran into Chinese newyear unfortunately, but I am excited to give it a try!
I also put your video up on the facebook group, mostly talking about the daylight cure resins and wondering if they could be used in a UV dlp/sla printer for super fast prints. I suspect they would end up overcuring, especially on the underside where the resin tends to pool.
I saw the sparkmaker at ces 2018, I was impressed by it
Hi, can you do a similar update /reveiw on the Kodama Obsidian 3D Printer? I'm interested in buying but would like to know the quality of the actual delivered product. Thanks a lot!
I checked in on this a couple weeks ago and it said the product was 1 month away from shipping in Q2 2019. I check again today and the Shopify website is unavailable
They should have changed their name to LMAO.
Robert Burns no they should call it "oh no"
What are your thoughts about the SLA company Carbon? I found them when I started looking up SLA printing, looks really cool, but I don't know if the stuff I'm seeing about them is just hyped up or whatever.
I'm an ONO backer and am glad that that they are only into me for $200 or so. How about review on some of the other DLP or SLA printers out there like the D7, UNIX Slash, or an update on the Moai?
Well when a name goes from Olo to O no I''m pretty sure you've blown your money
TIKO delta printer has a similar history of being unsure if they will eventually deliver.
ackthbbft I got mine. It’s not a great printer to say the least.
i think its possible to make a DIY one with the resin, anoyone know if it's possilble to buy this resin ?
You should so check out the B9 Creator SLA printer. that thing is Impressive!!!
Is there no non-toxic liquid/goop that can be solidified with a laser or something? Maybe something that reacts to heat instead of directly reacting to light, and have a maser or whatever focused and moved around like with a FDM extruder?
Does daylight-curing resin have any use outside of these printers? It seems very niche to produce but I can't think of any other uses for it.
TiagoTiago I think that's UV cured but I'm no dentist XD
Ah, sorry, somehow I missed that you said DAYlight.
They make both, UV and visible light cured. Three Bond has a VL (visible light) series of resins which cure with visible light.
Has the cost of resin fallen enough, to make these printers a reasonable purchase for a home user?
ONO what a creapy name - o(h) no a failure :D
Have you tried the 1000 from G3D?
A friend of mine backed it and said that the UL testing is required for items being sold assembled in the USA. That said the time it has taken is a tad concerning... i wonder if UL tests are publicly searchable?
You can check at www.ul.com ... but I didn't find anything. I expect that unless you desire to release the information it is private. UL testing is typically done to be pre-emptive in keeping lawsuits away, unless certification testing is required in a particular area (according to my poor understanding of the field)
Think it will ever actually ship?
I backed this (and the hot mess that was the tiko) while the ONO team has been semi consistent in their updates, their lack of interaction with their backers has been undeniably suspect. If I ever get this machine I'll be surprised, but really don't have high hopes for it. Learn from my mistakes and just buy a printer that has been tested and proven. You might pay a little more but it's better in the long run. Kickstarter is definitely not a store and is more so the wild west for technology. At the end of the day I just got a monoprice maker select v.2 and couldn't be happier with it.
Imagine it randomly shows up at your house 😂
I'm just waiting to see how the Monoprice SLA printers are going to perform when they finally get released.
And here I was wondering, "What if you get a phone call during a print?"
What happened to the Obsidian printer?
Thanks, I would love to see you try to the photon and give a review. I appreciate everything.
So... i don't know what the bottom of the container is made of. It sounds like it's a relatively thin film, however... If it holds it resin reliably then this is a pretty cool introduction gadget to 3D-printing. Other than that, it's obviously not for serious, hardcore, tens of hours of printing.
Another one bites the dust? (Or resin?) =)
When I KS the OLO...I don't even own my first printer yet. Now I am on my 4th printer already......
What if you get a phone call while printing ?
William Blakers you might have to turn it to airplane mode or something
That would be why they recommend Aeroplane Mode…
Maybe just buy another phone ?
My understanding is you basically go into airplane mode when running the printer. At least that is what was communicated in some of the Kickstarter supporter inormation.
3D printing is incompatible with having friends that could possibly call you. You're just making up shit to make the company look bad, but it doesn't need that, it can make itself look bad on its own.
This is my first and last Kickstarter experience. Won't be backing anything again!
Yess I was waiting for this video!
Well I still have to have hope that one day I will be able print with my phone.
works great I bought one
Rofl they haven't even shipped, keep believing though! Maybe it'll come true.
Another good video as usual.
Are all SLA prints clear and or translucent....or can it also be sold color like pla?
They can be coloured with pigments, but cheaper resins with less pigment are a bit translucent.
its 2020 already, still preorder
What about people who have pre-ordered? Can they get a refund?
I am an Obsidian 3D supporter. Thought well of them but after the latest 'update', slash comment, not impressed. Do you have any comment about the Obsidian or the staff they have had leave?
Is the ono going to work with my iPhone 13?
Zay Naing Oo Bruce no, it doesn't have a cpu.
Sparkmaker looks nice
Just blame apple for removing the audio jack. #audiojackftw
Any chance of an update on this Project?
its dead and everyone got scammed.
@@MakersMuse I kind of got that impression but it's still on the Kickstarter Website so not clear! Although after posting I did do a Google Search which threw up an article from June this year which says it seems dead.
