Ear Plugs are Always a Great idea at a Loud Concert. Take Great Care of your Ears, Eyes and Teeth for later years and you’ll be Very Glad you did. Great Catch.
I grew up in ogden. My favorite watching area is just east of Ogden before the high bridge. There is a old wooden hump back bridge. Love standing on it videoing trains. Hoping to get my drone there some day
WOW!! Thank you, Red, for being in the right place at the right time! This was a fascinating video to watch. This is the first time that I have ever seen a work train like this putting down concrete ties along the right of way. This is an eye-opening video. The people who put together this system to bring concrete rail ties to a location and then place the concrete ties on the ground must be complimented on the process that they devised. The westbound stack train was a bonus to the work train. The drone footage of both the work train and how it works to unload concrete ties and the stack train was superb.
You're welcome Thomas! That was a fun one to catch. Just missed the rain that morning. I was surprised how fast that over head lift rolled along the car rails. Friendly crew too👍
Work trains are always interesting, especially in action. That machine moving the groups of ties along the train: that’s quite something! Never seen that before.
Thanks for another excellent video Red!! Adjacent to the old Rueter and Zenor Massey Ferguson dealership! Brought back many fond memories my friend, thanks!!
Makes a Lot of Sense to Update Old Wood Ties for Mtce. Savings but the Larger Picture allows Trains to Travel Much Faster on the this Sub. Time is Big Money. 👍
Thanks Red, don’t get to see this side of railroading very often, watching these MOW machines in action is very fascinating to watch, especially from overhead with the drone.I wish more railfanns used drones to film trains such a unique perspective. Well done Red.👍🏼
AWESOME coverage of this process. The railroad I was with for 25 years who was the Canadian Pacific didn't use Concrete in this area of the country we just used wood and a small amount of steel ties which were junk. Thanks very much for sharing this. Have a great upcoming weekend Red.(Steve)
You're welcome Steve! I was lucky to catch this action. My Dad worked for CNW/UP. He said when the concrete ties first came out there were a lot of problems with them. Have a good one👍
If the next phase of operations is to replace selected ties, the machinery that I've seen doing this .. has been pretty amazing. Maybe you could find out when that's happening. Just a thought. GREAT work, thanks! - Ron
Great video footage Red, thank you for the video, very neat to see this in action, a friend of mine is a backhoe operator for U.P That was a good concert I bet, yeah few weeks back iron maiden was in Sioux city,Ia I wanted to go but couldn't, l.o.l Ok take it easy Red.
This is a great video! Slipping the old ties out & new ones in would be equally great. The only improvement I imagined would be for the lifting tram to have sideways movement capability where it could lift the ties, move them sideways clear of the flat cars and drop them on the ground, eliminationg both the crane grappler & having to travel so far to deliver a layer of ties. Real nice video, Red!!
That’s a pretty cool setup Red, I’ve seen videos of these things in operation over in Germany. I’m not sure what to think about concrete ties though🤔. They gotta be cheaper than wood but there is absolutely no give, I guess if you want longevity out of them you gotta keep them ties properly tamped and not have too many low spots. I know concrete ties are a big thing in Europe but I don’t know time will tell! Your always getting that crossover action too lol. Very interesting Red, have a great weekend 👍🏼😁🇺🇸🎄
Thanks STRETCH LIMO! My Dad worked with concrete ties when they first came out. Had a lot of breakage problems with them at first. I believe the UP even had a lawsuit against a tie manufacturer for defects. Certain types of ground may work better with them too. Yes I got lucky with the tie gang and crossover action. Have a good one👍🇺🇸
Great catch of an interesting process. Don’t know who needs a stronger stomach the shuttle operator moving back and forth or the track hoe operator swinging around on a moving train. Made me a little queasy watching it. Definitely a lot moving parts, all very well coordinated.
Congratulations I think you found the life-size Lego moving machine. I have never seen this piece of equipment much less how they actually work and just like jointed rail you hear the clicks as they pass between the cars and at 7:40 the Cat Distributing the ties almost got a love tap. I guess your father never had to work with these. My buddy out in Nebraska has the UP triple track main by him and only the industrial sidings are still wood. Great drone shots of the container train going around and since you were at the edge of the weather system and blue skies ahead both the full train and the work train just seem to Flow Away onto the harvested fields. PS. The drone took on Mega Bee buzzing and on 11\21 on the Virtual Rail camera @ Kearny NE a GE is moving 3 of the cars. The distribution car the flats with the Cat unloaders and the garage
Thanks Paul B! Yes the mega Lego mover. The track operator definitely had to pay attention. My Dad worked with concrete ties when they first came out. He said there were problems early on with breaking. Sounds like they have them figured out now. The timing was just right on the weather!
What a great catch, Red! I thought that UP sprayer train you filmed was unique, but boy this one is something else. That traveling bridge crane reminds me of those huge cranes you see at intermodal yards and ship docks. Slick setup and operators that are in tune with each other. I thought the rail grinder my brother helped on while he was working MOW on the IAIS was something to behold.... By the way, did you happen to see the CNW F7 401 coming into Boone while you were out that way? Saw it was part of that UP donation train, and was happy to see it went to somewhere on its old home line. Last concert I attended was Dropkick Murphys in Des Moines in 2014, my hearing wasn't good when I went and worse when I left. I ought to know have better. Thanks so much for another excellent video Red!
You're welcome stampingdieguy! I saw a video of the donation train. Looks like the CNW unit will find a home in Boone! Yes those guys were well orchestrated on the tie unload job!
13:58 This plan has been well thought out. Note the difference in how the CAT operator holds the boom up and not just off to the side when passing the signals. I've seen the runner pack by Micro-trains and didn't think much of it as I don't model the UP. But, after seeing this action I'm thinking I can find a place to set up a drop-off point.
Dont know if you saw the Strasburg (N&W) 475's accident a couple weeks ago, but the operator was in the excavator that the steamer hit, he should have swung that boom out of the way to avoid the damage it caused to the 475. That Cat operator on UP really knew how to work it safely!

@@thomasboese3793 and the Strasburg shop did a remarkable job repairing the smokebox front of 475. And it was a mystery why 475's headlight didnt appear to get any damage, unless they had a spare one on hand. UP did a complete upgrade on the former GM&O line through the town i live in 20 some odd years ago, cleaned and/or resculpted the ballast, reshaped the original roadbed from double track to single, concrete ties, and CWR, all in one continuous operation, and now freights are allowed 70 mph, while Amtrak is allowed 90 on the line from Chicago-St. Louis.
Thanks TIK! You only need a drone license if you're making money with it. I went through Fort Scott on the way back from Texas and got some footage of the BNSF yard there. Interesting history.
